Can Beethoven and "Bird" co -exist in Philadelphia on Temple University-owned WRTI? The former "Jazz 90" is acquiring the classical music library of WFLN, Philadelphia, as new WFLN owner Greater Media hopes to mollify angry fans of the 50 -year classical station as it prepares to launch a new format on 95.7 MHz (speculation is some form of modern AC). WRTI will continue to air jazz in some dayparts (unspecified as yet) -- but the resulting hybrid may irritate fans of both classical and jazz. WRTI says it won't lay off any current full -time announcers from its jazz format (and might pick up several personalities from WFLN). WFLN has had five different owners (on paper) over just the last 18 months, and the price kept going higher with each new deal, making it less likely the classical format would stay. As for WRTI: It's already built a wide regional network, using repeaters and full -power transmitters, in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. Those are: WJAZ, Summerdale, PA (Harrisburg); WRTY, Jackson Township, PA (Scranton); WRTX, Dover, DE; WRTQ, Ocean City, NJ (Atlantic City); and WRTL, Ephrata, PA (Lancaster -Reading). WRTI's longstanding position as "Jazz 90" has been severely eroded in recent years by "Smooth Jazz" WJJZ, Philadelphia. As for the future of the 95.7 MHz frequency: last week Greater Media was converting several billboards for its rocker WMMR to a tease campaign for a station that looks like it will be called "Max."
