Association in Most supposedly neutral brokers on the St Peter's Square international scene have not particularly at the Vatican last well hidden ulterior motives to their Saturday involvement in the affairs of other PIC: PAUL countries. McSHERRY The Vatican, though, can perform the role of peacemaker in many of the world’s troubled hotspots. We saw recently the great work the Pope did in reducing hostilities between Cuba and the United States, two countries who were once such fierce enemies that the world stood on the brink of nuclear war over the hosting of Soviet nuclear weapons. Last week, the leaders of countries met in Germany at the G7 summit; this week, the leaders of countries and corporations will meet in Austria at the annual meeting of the shadowy Bilderberg Group. The world be a much better place if such self-appointed rulers of the world looked to Pope Francis and followed his example in giving up the trappings of materialism and money, an outward sign of working for the greater good. FRIDAY JUNE 19 2015 SCOTTISH CATHOLIC OBSERVER CHILDREN’S LITURGY 21

Our weekly series on Children’s Liturgy has lesson plans and activity suggestions for use with young people who are on the path to Christ Each week, Catechists will find readings and Psalm responses, complemented by prayer, reflection, FAITH discussion questions, and activities. Please feel free to use them as you wish The lessons are created by Adorer-theologians using the lens of the spirituality of St Maria de Mattias, which also embraces precious blood spirituality FIRST While this is the starting point for the lessons, readers are invited to approach them however the spirit moves you The Church is concerned with the availability and understanding of scripture for children who have their rightful place in the Church. In light of this SCO aims to provide a useful tool in drawing children closer to KIDS the Catholic Faith

AVING examined the start of the dis- integration of the political power of the Islamic Caliphate, it is high time to summarise the situation as we find it around the year 900. As we have seen, since the rise of the Frankish monarchy, which reached its apogee during the reign of the Emperor,H Charlemagne (774-814), there had been three major powers in the cultural arena occupied by Christianity and Islam: Orthodox Byzantium, the Islamic Caliphate and Frankish Latin Europe. The strong centralised control exercised by the two Christian emperors and the Caliph had ensured a relatively steady policy towards those of the oppo- site religion. This had been particularly important in the Caliphate, where around half of all Christians lived. We saw how there was a general culture of tolerance, and, until the reign of Al-Mansur (754- 775), Christians were even discouraged to convert to Islam. The great flowering of culture and learn- ing of the Caliphate has also been discussed in some detail. We also saw how in Byzantium the cultural impact of Islam caused Iconoclasm, which died down by the middle of the ninth century. By 900, the shape of Orthodoxy as it exists today had been created. Byzantium itself, led from 867 by the Mace- donian dynasty, underwent a massive resurgence. In the tenth century, it would eventually recapture all the Balkans, drive the Arabs from Crete, as well as from parts of Sicily and southern Italy. Here, the ancient Greek presence was reinforced, and exer- cised a profound influence on Latin Christianity. In the east, the border along where Turkey’s mod- ern southern border lies, proved durable. Within Byzantium, the impact of Islam was felt particularly strongly in the field of the arts. Byzan- tine artists adapted Islamic motifs; for example, the First Church of the Monastery of Hosios Loukas, in Phokis, Greece, was decorated with patterns based on the Arab kufic script. Even in the field of liturgy, that essential statement of the Orthodox perception of Christianity, there was a strong Islamic impact. The batrashil, a silk liturgical vest- ment, reflected Islamic designs. In many places, the artists were either bilingual or Arabs, signing their names in the language of Muhammad.
