She was born Abt. 1795 in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, England, and died Abt. 1862 in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, England.

Notes for James Banner: James and his family lived in from 1816 to 1818, and in during the 1820's, then moved to Burcott and seemed to stay there. Information gathered from the 1841 and 1851 census for Bromsgrove, England In 1841 James and Mary are listed as 45 years of age. James is an Agricultural Labourer and Mary is a Nailor. I thought they lived in Bromsgrove but apparently they lived in the village of Burcott just outside Bromsgrove. According to Colin Wood James must have lived on Alcester Road as you walk from in Burcott, just past the entrance to Burcott Lane and near to Hill Homestead. Aaron and his brothers are still at home, but all the girls have left. In 1851James is listed as 62 and Mary is still 45!!! John is still at home but all the rest have left.

The following information about Nailor's was sent to me by a cousin Audrey Wheeler and Colin Wood another genealogist living in Bromsgrove. They explained that even though our family did not appear to be Nailor's on a regular basis they may have been engaged in that profession on a "part-time" basis. They would have had it just as hard being agricultural labourers. Aaron appears to have been a hay trusser all his life, but this would have been seasonal and he would have had to find other work at sometime. As "Day Labourers" they would have been hired by the day to do any type of work with no long term employment, but from one day to the next.

A Nailor's Life: Nailmaking was mainly a domestic trade with nails being made in small workshops attached to Nailor's houses. The nailshop was a small one-story building with a hearth where iron rods were heated on a coke fire. There would be a bellows to provide draught to the fire, and an anvil on which the nails were hammered, a heavy hammer known as the "oliver" which was worked by a treadle and a pole and which formed the head of the nail. To make a nail by hand required a great deal of hard work. An iron rod was heated in the fire. It was then laid on the anvil and the point formed by several blows of a hand hammer. It was then cut to the required length on a fixed chisel called a hardy, inserted into the bore which held it while the oliver, the heavy hammer was brought down on it to form the head. It was then ejected from the bore by a lever and the process began again with the next length of iron on the rod. The men worked hard for very long hours and very little pay. Often they would go straight to the beer house after work and then home to beat the wife, and up the next day at four or five to start work again. Conditions for women were doubly hard in that they were expected to combine work and domestic duties. Pearson's Magazine reported a woman in Bromsgrove who had been married 23 years and who had never had a new dress since she was married, and another whose only new dress was paid for by subscription at church so that she had decent black clothes to wear at the funeral of her child. Even the children, as young as eight had to work. Very often parents would chain the children to the anvil so they had to work. And often the children did not have any shoes to wear and the roads were but mud tracks. Nailing families became notorious for their poverty, poor diet and bad housing conditions. The nailing system was very strange. At the top of the "tree" was the Nail Master who owned large warehouses where he stored the iron to make the nails, and the nails when they were returned from the Nailor's cottage. At the bottom of the "tree" was the Nailor, who bought the raw iron and worked hard for around 16 hours a day forging the iron into nails. And the crunch - in between these two came the Nail Fogger, also known as Nail Factors or Sweaters. They ripped off the Nailor's every way they could. The Nail Masters and Factors would often have houses built for themselves, where as the Nailor could barely earn a living. The Nail Fogger, a man who was very often a Nailor himself but bought the iron from the Nail Master and then sold it on the the Nailor's to make into nails. All this exchange of iron and nails was done by weight and very often the Nail Fogger would have three sets of scales - one to sell the wrought iron and one to buy back the nails and a correct set for the inspectors. Wrought iron weighed out would be "heavy" and the nails weighed back in would be "light." This way the Nail Foggers fiddled the all ready hard up Nailor out of lots of money and made it for themselves. On top of this most Foggers had a little shop of their own and paid the Nailor in tokens which could only be spent in their shop, for goods at inflated prices. This was know as the truck system and was eventually outlawed. The Nailor's of course were illiterate and in numerate so could not argue either way. The Nailor's had to "work" the iron into nails in a given time period, otherwise he would end up in court for not doing so. Often Nailor's would pawn their "Sunday Best" set of clothes on Monday to buy food, only to go and get the clothes back again on Sunday morning to go to church. The Nailor's often went on strike to try and get more money - but it did not always work. At one time the militia were ordered to charge down Bromsgrove's High Street on their horses to try to break up the crowds that had gathered. To counteract this the Nailor's used to make "caltrop" nails, or "tiswas" nails to throw on the ground. These nails were a tetrahedron with four legs ground to a point, so which ever way they fell on the ground there would always be a spike facing upwards. These spikes would then stick in the horses hoofs and make them lame. To supplement the Nailor's income, in the summer many worked the land and became market gardeners. And another source of income was the hop picking in Herefordshire during the summer. Many Nailor's would take a "holiday" and go hop picking - taking the children with them so when they returned they would be in court for keeping their children away from school. All the money they had earned, gone in court fines. The following is from a letter written December 31, 1900 On the last day of the old century when people got up in the morning to go to work the first thing they saw was their furniture floating about in their homes, in some places the water rose to a depth of 6ft and in Birmingham the water rose as high as the arms of the lampposts. One policeman who wanted to reach his home to see if his wife and family was quite safe had to swim a distance of 10 yards across the street with his clothes on. Almost every river in England overflowed it's banks, the water running out of the rivers soon found it's way into the streets and villages. People who had to go to work found it almost impossible to get out of their houses to earn their daily bread. The River Spadesbourne which runs through Bromsgrove overflowed it's banks and the water rushed down Worcester Street and Watt close and soon found stopping places in houses etc. Messrs Russell and Vinings Boot factory became flooded. A pigsty in Gas Square was washed away and it's occupant had to swim on all fours down a running stream, it being rescued from drowning after much difficulty. Almost hundreds of rabbits, fowls etc were drowned in the stream.

Notes for Mary Ann Kings: Mary worked from at least 1841 to after 1851 as a Nailor. I think I have found her on the 1861 census living in Burcott, listed as a widow, age 60 and a Laundress. She has a lodger William Hampton age 52 living with her. Because of the age given which makes her younger than she really was I think the death in 1862 which again has her age as 60 is probably our Mary.

Notes for Aaron Banner: At the time of Louisa's birth in 1845 Aaron and Mary lived on High Street in Bromsgrove. On the 1851 census Aaron and his family are listed as living at 158 Worcester Street, Bromsgrove. I tried to get photos of these houses but was told they were no longer standing. Here is a summary of what the houses were like in those day. Very often families of 13 would live in a "two up two down" cottage. No bathroom, but a wash tub in the front room by the coal fire. No toilet. Brick outhouses were built at the bottom of the garden and "night soil men" would empty them at night and spread the effluent on the fields. Often the toilet was a communal latrine, having four or five seats in a row. No running water - a shared hand pump in the back garden, or a well - another source of neighbourly feuds. The single storey building adjoining the cottage often doubled as a Wash house and a Brew house, where the laundry got done and beer and cider was make. Also if a policeman stood outside your house and could hear you swearing inside the house, then you ended up in court and were fined.

She was born Abt. 1834 in Norton, Worcestershire, England, and died Aft. March 31, 1901.

Notes for William Banner: I have found a William Banner son of James marrying Elizabeth Vaughn August 24, 1862. He is listed as a widower, but so far I cannot find a first marriage. I have found a marriage to Emma Causer in July of 1853 in Birmingham. I also cannot find him on the 1861 census for Bromsgrove, but have found a William and Emma Banner in West Bromwich in 1861. More research needed to confirm this information.

I have also found Emma Causer in the 1851 census for Bromsgrove and she is around the correct age and from Birmingham which would be why they married there. I have also found a death for an Emma Banner on October 24, 1860, age 30 from Birmingham Road but this would mean the 1861 census is not our William. Again more research needed.

Dated September 13, 1934 - Signed by Hannah Banner: Witnesses - Arthur Elliott and Harold Hure.

I am not sure what happened to Maud Elizabeth, but she lived at Francis Street and at least one of her brothers died there. From letters to Victor Banner from her daughters they don't know anything of their Father, but on Maud's death certificate her name is Maude Elizabeth Ellson?????

On the 1901 census Hannah is working and living at the 38 64 Regimental Depot with Reginald and Leslie. It says under employment status - 'Own Account' so I assume she was not destitute and had her own money. Her age was wrong and the last name was Barnes instead of Banner but I am 100% sure it is them.

Notes for Maude Alice Banner: EXCERPT FROM THE BRANTFORD EXPOSITOR SEPTEMBER 25, 1928 WEDDING BELLS - SMITH-BANNER Trinity Church was the scene of a very pretty autumn wedding on Saturday afternoon when Miss Maud Banner, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Percy Banner of Brantford was united in marriage to Mr. Stanley Smith, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. T. Smith, of Brantford. Rev. C.H.P. Owen conducted the ceremony in the presence of immediate relatives of the bride and groom. The wedding music was played by Miss M. Owen and during the signing of the register Mr. G. Almas of Toronto sang "For You Alone." The bride who was given away by her father wore a lovely dress of white georgette over satin, trimmed with satin ribbon, white kid shoes and a coronet of orange blossoms. Her shower bouquet was of Ophelia roses and baby's breath with asparagus fern. Miss Alice Banner, sister of the bride made a charming bridesmaid, her dress being of shell pink georgette over satin with hat and shoes to match. She carried a bouquet of Columbia roses and baby's breath, with pink and silver ribbon. Mr. Tolhurst attended the bridegroom. Following the ceremony a reception was held at the home of the bride's parents, which was decorated in white and blue for about 85 guests. Mrs. Banner received in a handsome gown of black georgette with sand trimmings and a hat to match, with a corsage of sunset roses, and assisted by Mrs. Smith mother of the groom who was smartly dressed in black satin with velvet hat to match, with a corsage of white roses. Later Mr. and Mrs. Smith left by motor for Toronto and points east, the bride travelling in a French beige satin dress with hat and fox fur to match. On their return they will reside in Brantford. Out of town guests were present from Toronto, Hamilton and Detroit. The gifts were costly and numerous.

These stories were transcribed from a video interview with Ellen (Banner) Brown in 1991. Mom said that Aunt Maude was always wandering away as a small child. Grandma was at home with Ellen, and Alice who was just a baby and could not always keep a good eye on Maude. Grandma got so worried about her always straying that one day she tied her up to a pole in the back yard. Apparently Maude would get so tangled up all the time that Grandma gave up on that idea. One day when Maude was about four she was gone for a very long time and Grandma was worried about her. When the children were coming home from school Grandma saw Maude with them and called her home. She asked Maude where she had been and Maude told her at school. Grandma asked what had happened and Maude told her she followed the kids into the school and just sat down. The teacher asked what her name was and Maude told her "Maudie darling" that is what Grandma and Grandpa called her. From then on she went to school every day and at least Grandma knew where she was!

Information from the Brantford City Directories: In 1927 Maude is listed as working at Slingsby's, and in 1928 as an Opr and living at home. In 1945 she is listed as being back with Stan Smith at 5 Ann Street. Fred Garrett is living at 97 Emilie Street. In 1946 she is back as Maud A. Banner and living at 74 Bishop Street - very confusing. By 1947 it appears she and Fred married as they are listed together at 97 Emilie Street.

EXCERPT FROM THE BRANTFORD EXPOSITOR - MONDAY MARCH 26, 1928 WEDDING BELLS - BROWN - BANNER A very pretty wedding took place in Trinity Church, on Saturday March 24, when Ellen Amelia, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Percy Banner, was united in marriage to Harold Hebden, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Brown. The officiating clergyman was Rev. C.H.P. Owen. The bride who was given in marriage by her father, looked lovely in a white georgette dress with slippers and hose to match. The long filmy veil was caught in a coronet of orange blossoms. She entered the church leaning on the arm of her father to the strains of the wedding march played by Miss Marian Owen who presided at the organ. The bridal bouquet was of sunset roses, sweet peas and maiden hair fern. The bridesmaid was Miss Maud Banner, sister of the bride, who was becomingly gowned in daffodil georgette with touches of green and hand painted roses on the deep collar and skirt. Her hat was of daffodil mohair with a touch of spring blossoms at one side, and she carried a bouquet of red roses and carnations. The groom was supported by Mr. Stanley Smith. During the signing of the register Mr. Charles Christmas Junior, of Hamilton sand, "The Crown." After the wedding ceremony, a reception was held at the home of the bride's parents, Bishop Street, where about 60 guests sat down to the wedding breakfast. The table was lovely with silver baskets containing roses and carnations. There was a large canopy under which the bridal pair sat. The decorations throughout were pale blue and white. The health of the bride was proposed by Mr. Thomas Brown, (father of the groom) and responded to by the groom. The toast to the groom was proposed by Mr. Percy Banner (father of the bride) The bride's mother was gowned in blue georgette with silver trimmings. Mr. and Mrs. Brown left for a wedding trip to Buffalo, Rochester and New York. The brides going away dress was of powder blue georgette with hat to match and black satin pumps. BROWN: Ellen Amelia - In memory of my beloved mother, who died September 10, 1994.

The tide recedes but leaves behind Bright seashells on the sand. The sun goes down and gentle warmth Still lingers on the land. The music stops but echoes on In all its sweet refrains. For every joy that passes Something beautiful remains. Loved and sadly missed by daughter, Marilyn and family.

BROWN - In loving memory of a dear mother, Ellen, who passed away September 10, 1994.

Love's last gift - Remembrance. Every day in some small way Memories of you come my way. Though absent you are ever near Still missed, still loved and ever dear. Lovingly remembered by daughter, Dorothy

BROWN: Ellen Amelia - In loving memory of a very special mother and grandmother, Ellen Amelia, who passed away September 10, 1994.

God looked around his garden And found an empty space, He looked down upon the earth And found your tired face. He put his arms around you And lifted you to rest, God's garden must be beautiful For He only takes the best. He knew that you were suffering He knew that you felt pain, He knew that you would never get well If on this earth you remained. He saw the road was getting rough And the hills were hard to climb. So he closed your weary eyes And whispered "Peace be thine." It broke our hearts to lose you But you did not go alone, For part of us went with you The day God called you home. A million times we've needed you A million times we've cried, If we cold have save you You never would have died. We shall all meet again one day And there will be no more tears. Until we meet again. Lovingly remembered and missed by daughter, Eleanor, her husband Steve: Stephen, Scott and Ashley.

Notes for Harold Hebden Brown: This story was taken from a video interview with Ellen (Banner) Brown Harold first met Ellen when she was dating his brother Wilbert. At the time Wilbert had broken up with his girlfriend Alice, but they got back together and Harold decided it was time to make his move. He chased Ellen until he caught her. He would drive to where she worked and offer to give her a lift home. If he missed her he would go to her home, visit with her father and wait for her there. Ellen was some what afraid of him because he was such a big man. She thought his hands were so big, what would she do if he ever made a move on her! She said that she would hide out at her friend Annie's house hoping to miss him, but Harold did not give up easily and after courting her for over a year they married.

Harold built and was the chief engineer of radio station 10BQ. His father Tom was the voice of the station, but Harold was the brains behind the scene. I have a copy of the history of the station written by Tom Brown.

Harold was a genius working with anything mechanical. When he was about six the story goes that he took apart a broken clock and repaired it. He built his own movie picture camera and projector. In his sixties he started developing his own photos and he loved every new gadget that came along. I sometimes think that he was born about fifty years to soon. He would have loved all the new "toys" we have now. I can only imagine how thrilled he would have been with microwaves, computers, VCR'S, answering machines and being able to start your car from inside your home with just the push of a button!

Information taken from Brantford City Directories: Harold's first job was in 1917 when he was listed as Lathe hd-Seale Co. I found him in 1818 with the same listing and then there is nothing until 1921 when he is a mechanic at Brown's Garage, but since Tom opened the garage sometime in 1918, I would assume Dad worked there from the beginning. He is a mechanic there until 1940 and then his occupation is listed as Radio Repair Service.

154 vi. Percival Gordon Banner (Source: Ellen (Banner) Brown.), born April 05, 1915 in Brantford, Ontario, Canada; died October 27, 1985 in Brantford, Ontario, Canada. He married Margaret Irene Wilson (Source: Ellen (Banner) Brown.) July 21, 1939 in Brantford, Ontario, Canada (Source: Ellen (Banner) Brown.); born June 16, 1920 in Unknown.

Notes for Percival Gordon Banner: This story was taken from a video interview with Ellen (Banner) Brown in 1991. Mom always said that she was like a second Mother to Percy and that she loved him unconditionally, he was her baby brother. He wouldn't go to sleep unless she would lay down with him and when she went to play with her friends she always had to take him because he would cry if she left. When Grandpa came home from the first world war Percy didn't like him and said "I wish he had been killed with a bullet" Mom told me that Grandpa would bring him a chocolate bar every day a lunch trying to buy his love. When I asked if the girls got jealous Mom said of course not, "we just always hoped that Dad would forget and bring a coconut bar because Percy didn't like them and then Dad would cut it up and give it to the girls." When Percy was about 7 or 8 he complained on pains in his stomach, but they all thought he said it just to get out of doing any work. After a few days Grandma decided to take him to see Doctor Palmer who drove him immediately to the hospital to have surgery. He was afraid that Percy's appendix would rupture before they got him there. The appendix did rupture and poor Percy had tubes coming out of him and he couldn't even have a drink of water. Apparently Percy said to Grandma and Grandpa that if they would only give him a drink of water he would die a happy person! They stayed with him until about two in the morning to make sure he was OK and Grandpa wouldn't go to work the next day because he wanted to go back to the hospital. After the surgery Grandpa always said that they took one devil out of Percy and put twelve more in! But Mom said that he had such a jolly laugh that you couldn't stay mad at him for long.

Information taken from Brantford City Directories: Percy and Margaret lived at 77 Mohawk Street in 1940 and 1941. In 1942-43&44 they resided at 80 Emilie Street. From 1945 to 1950 they lived at 2 Sanderson Street.

Notes for Elsie Eileen Banner: Elsie has always been a very good athlete. When she was young she played basketball and was on the Ontario and the National teams. She was also a gymnast, played baseball and later took up golf and curling. During the fourties she played for Burtol Ladies Softball Club - they won the International League Trophy in 1947, and Elsie has her picture in the paper receiving the award. Elsie played first base and was one of the teams top hitters. In the early sixties Elsie won the club championship her first time in the finals at Northridge Golf Club defeating Betty Edgington in the 36 hole final round. She won the ladies championship many times after that. Later Elsie and her husband Gord MacBride joined the Brantford Golf and County Club and she also won the ladies championship there many times. This is what was written in the Expositor after one of her wins. Mrs. Elsie MacBride proves the adage that champions win the close games. She won another photo finish when she defeated Betty Edgington 1 up to capture the championship at the Brantford Golf and Country Club. It was the third consecutive last-hole victory for Mrs. MacBride in the championship series. The finalists were tied after 17 holes and Mrs. MacBride got a par on the 18th and her opponent had to settle for a bogey when a 12-inch putt rimmed the cup.

Information taken from the Brantford City Directories: In 1940 Elsie is listed as working at Brantford Cordage and living at home. 1941 she and Jack are living at 60 Palace Street and in 1942 & 1943 at 30 Rose Ave. By 1944 they are at 74 Bishop Street with Grandpa and Grandma.
