India SITUATION REPORT NATURE OF HAZARD: FLOODS In Maharashtra Bhandara and Gondia were badly affected but situation has improved there. Andhra Pradesh situation is getting better in Khamam, East and West Godavary districts. Road connectivity getting restored and Communication is improving. People from the camps have started returning back. Flood Situation is under control as the Rivers in Andhra Pradesh are flowing at Low Flood Levels. In Surat situation is getting much better as Tapi at Ukai dam is flowing with falling trend In Maharashtra River Godavari is flowing below the danger level. In Maharashtra Konkan and Vidharbha regions have received heavy rainfall. Rainfall in Koyna is recorded at 24.9mm and Mahableshwar 18mm in Santa Cruz in Mumbai it is 11mm. The areas which received heavy rainfall in last 24 hours in Gujarat are Bhiloda, Himatnagar and Vadali in Sabarkantha district, Vav and Kankrej in Banskantha district and Visnagar in Mehsana. IMD Forecast; Yesterday’s (Aug16) depression over Orissa moved northwestwards and lay centred at 0830 hours IST of today, the 17th August, 2006 near Lat. 22.00 N and Long. 83.50 E, about 100 kms east of Champa. The system is likely to move in a northwesterly direction and weaken gradually. Under its influence, widespread rainfall with heavy to very heavy falls at few places are likely over Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh during next 24 hours. Keshav Krishna 1National Geophysical Research Institute (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research) Uppal Road, Hyderabad-500007, India 2Department of Applied Geochemistry, Osmania University, Hyderabad-500007, India Abstract: Toxic trace metals concentrations in soil exert a decisive impact on soil quality and its use in food production particularly in an industrial area. An attempt is made here to study toxic metals such as Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, including Ba, Co and V in representative soil samples from Patancheru industrial area near Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh. It is a known polluted area and is one of the most contaminated regions where about 260 small and large-scale manufacturers of pharmaceuticals, paints, pesticides, chemicals, steel and metallic products have been functioning for over several decades. Toxic trace metal geochemical studies were carried out in fifteen representative soil samples collected from residential and agricultural area, to understand the spatial distribution and to assess the level of contamination on the basis of index of geoaccummulation, enrichment factor, contamination factor and degree of contamination. World Heritage Site – Kalka Shimla Railway an Introduction
WORLD HERITAGE SITE – KALKA SHIMLA RAILWAY AN INTRODUCTION Ambala Division is the proud custodian of “WORLD HERITAGE SITE-KALKA SHIMLA RAILWAY”. The heritage status to KSR was awarded on 7th July, 2008 by UNESCO. Shimla (then spelt Simla) was settled by the British shortly after the first Anglo- Gurkha war and is located at 7,116 feet(2,169m) in the foothills of the Himalaya. By the 1830s, Shimla had already developed as a major base for the British. It became the summer capital of British India in 1864, and also the Headquarters of the British army in India. The Kalka- Shimla Railway was built to connect Shimla, the summer capital of India during the British Raj, with the Indian rail system. “The Guinness Book of Rail facts & feats” records Kalka Shimla Railways as the greatest narrow gauge engineering in India. It is indeed true, construction of 103 tunnels (102 Existing) aggregating five miles and over 800 bridge in three years, that too in rough and hostile terrain was not an easy task. The Historic, approximate 111 years old KLK-SML Railway line which was opened for public traffic on 9th Nov.1903, became UNESCO Declared world Heritage Railway line, when it was conferred Heritage status on 10th July 2008 & listed under “Mountain Railways of India”. The idea of a Railway line to Shimla dates back to the introduction of Railways in India. It is said that in The DELHI GAZETTE, a correspondent in November, 1847 sketched the route of railway to Shimla with the estimates of the traffic returns etc in appropriate style. -

College for Men (Autonomous), Kadapa-516004, AP, India *Corresponding author e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT The present study explores the traditional medicinal plants of Lankamalleswara wildlife sanctuary, Kadapa District, Andhra Pradesh, India. Objective: The prime objective of the study is to document the traditional medicinal plants used by tribal people inhabiting the sanctuary. Methods: The ethnobotanical studies carried out during 2013-15. The information was collected through interviews, discussions and observations. Many tribal pockets were visited to interact local people and gathered information about medicinal plants. Results: The present investigation revealed the medicinal properties of 96 species belonging to 88 genera under 47 families. The most cited family was Apocyanaceae (9) followed by Lamiaceae (6), Fabaceae (6), Malvaceae (5), Capparaceae (4), Rubiaceae (3), Combretaceae (3), Menispermaceae (3), Asteraceae (3), Convolvulaceae (3), Moraceae (3), Verbenaceae (3), (3), Euphorbiaceae (2), Amaranthaceae (2), Liliaceae (2), Caesalpinaceae (2), Cleomaceae (2), Solanaceae (2), Loganiaceae (2) and remaining families contributed one species. Conclusion: The study concludes that there is a urgent need to conserve the plant resources of study area from over exploitation and illegal trade of rare plants like Red sanders. Hubli-Dharwad Sustainable Healthcare Waste Management Project The Problem of Medical Waste Medical waste, if not handled properly, can pose a serious threat to human and environmental health. Infectious waste can spread diseases such as hepatitis and HIV, toxic chemicals such as mercury can cause permanent damage to adults and children, and the burning of plastics, particularly PVC, can release pollutants into the atmosphere to contaminate the environment for decades to come. There are strict rules on how medical waste should be handled in India, but experience shows that they are not always observed. Used syringes are packaged and resold, dirty bandages are used to stuff cheap mattresses and patients and carers are unknowingly breathing in mercury fumes from broken thermometers. On the other hand, most of the waste produced by medical centres is harmless if it is segregated and handled properly, and much of it can be recycled at a profit. About the Project The Hubli-Dharwad Sustainable Healthcare Waste Management Project is setting out to help the hospitals and clinics of the district improve their practices so that they can reduce harm and save money. The project will train medical staff, waste workers, hospital managers and government officials in best practice for medical waste handling through practical demonstrations and lecture courses specifically tailored for the different tasks each profession needs to understand. To ensure the greatest benefit to the community, the project will prioritise the public healthcare service run by the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation, but where possible will also reach out to interested members of private institutions. -
