To Share, To Grow Nishal Oli

At 17 weeks long, Climate + Change was the longest temporary exhibition to be held in Nepal. It was also the biggest scientific showcase till date.

Although the last bit sounds oxymoronic: that science can be exhibited 5 in a gallery as ‘art’, the issue-in-focus (the climate change in the Hindu Kush Himalayan Region) begot a unique approach. The multi-disciplinary exhibits and programming were envisioned and curated to challenge viewers while steering clear of cynicism that often plagues the issue. Another complication was the viewers themselves. Acting as bridge between the scientific community and layperson is (to put it gently) an ordeal. The mix in the visitors expected – everyone from young students to the elder generations – who could in a matter of lore, explain all the changes that happened in front of their eyes. The language and medium had to be similarly adjusted. C+C educated through humble exchanges and creativity. Aside from accentuating specific issues, the goal was (never overbearing like ‘to change the world’ but) to at least start somewhere, perhaps with small steps. It was about creating a platform where experts and concerned citizens could come together and discuss/share both issues and possible solutions. Ultimately this inviting attitude and dynamic nature of the exhibition 9 became its biggest strengths. Now that C+C has closed its first chapter, it looks ahead. Hopefully to move around the country to continue some of its programs (such as the travelling exhibition with the Book Bus) and conversations with policymakers, teachers and students to improve Nepali academia – to make it dynamic, interdisciplinary and creative like the C+C exhibition. Climate + Change was organized by GlaciersWorks and ICIMOD in collaboration with US Embassy, UNICEF, Thinc, photo. circle, Nepal Tourism Board and Nepal Art Council. It was sponsored by ICIMOD Foundation, Godrej, Yeti Airlines, Peak Promotions, Aqua Hundred, The Chandra and Joseph Joy Trust, Hisense, Vianet, World Distribution Nepal, Smart Media and Technology and Sabah Nepal. The education partners of the exhibition were Srijanalaya and Edushala.

Nischal Oli was the Gallery Manager for the Climate + Change exhibition. 12 For the past two years, he has been working with not-for-profit media and arts projects through different organizations.

It is a tribute to an older city but also promises a free cup of coffee for every “Check In” or “Like.” But, more than anything, it reintroduces Kathmandu to a whole new audience and makes visitors rethink its future. Kashish Das Shrestha

perhaps it couldn’t be timelier to have and build on this conversation, in a unique and accessible way through images, and the series of policy dialogues we will be hosting in our adjoining Gallery space. One thing we were certain of was that our guests should enter and leave the museum with a unique experience that feels both worldly but deeply local, and it helps them rethink museums as a whole. To try and achieve these ideas, we set ourselves a fairly ambitious goal: to engage as many senses of our guests as possible, and as subtly as possible, and to draw them into our space, but allow them to stay connected with the world outside, to tell the story of both our built, cultural and natural heritage. The layout of the Museum is designed like the old alleys and bahals of the valley. We took a bare concrete floor and layered it with about 1200 bricks that are three generations old and had been retired from their duty as house walls when the homes they were built with were demolished for Kathmandu’s road expansion. The idea was simple: visitors should feel like they are walking on an old street, while fully aware they are, in fact, on the third floor of a brand new building in Durbarmarg. In our bahal, we pay tribute to the dhungey dharas and water ponds that rowing up in Kathmandu, I I never set out to build a museum; I have ensured water supply to the valley’s was fortunate to frequently simply wanted to exhibit photographs population for centuries. By the end of it all, CMK’s intention is also to encourage its visitors, particularly youth and foreigners, to visit other Museums in the city, and not just the more popular ones in Patan, Bhaktapur, and Basantapur. In a way, to reintroduce the city and it’s museums to a whole new audience; to rethink not just the city’s museums, but through those museums, our urban centers and cities, and their future.
