HBO Debuts Original Comedy Series Silicon Valley HBO debuts original comedy series Silicon Valley Miami, FL – March 12, 2014 – HBO Latin America announced the premiere of the new original comedy series Silicon Valley on April 6th in the Caribbean, simultaneously with the United States. Created by Mike Judge, the series is set in the high-tech gold rush of modern Silicon Valley, where the people most qualified to succeed are the least capable of handling success. The eight-episode comedy takes an irreverent look at the new world of technology, a land with big ideas and even bigger egos. Silicon Valley charts the rising fortunes of Richard (Thomas Middleditch), an introverted computer programmer who lives in a Hacker Hostel start-up incubator along with his friends Big Head (Josh Brener), Gilfoyle (Martin Starr), and Dinesh (Kumail Nanjiani). These social misfits live under the watch of Erlich (T.J. Miller), a dotcom millionaire who lets them stay in his house for free – as long as he gets a 10% stake in their projects. Stuck working part-time at a large tech company called Hooli, Richard’s obscure website, Pied Piper, seems to be going nowhere fast. But when two competing executives learn of the site’s novel compression algorithm, Richard finds himself caught in the middle of an extreme bidding war between Hooli founder Gavin Belson (Matt Ross) and independent billionaire venture capitalist Peter Gregory (Christopher Evan Welch). Through season one, Richard and his band of merry programmers struggle to launch their own company, facing the many challenges of being entrepreneurs (creating a business plan, delegating work, picking a logo, etc.). While the companies on the show, like Hooli, are fictitious, the series aims for verisimilitude, featuring real-world businesses and industry events. Creator Mike Judge was partially inspired by his own experiences as a Silicon Valley engineer in the late ‘80s. Silicon Valley features a talented ensemble of young comic actors. Cast regulars include: Thomas Middleditch (Search Party, The Office), T.J. Miller (Mash Up, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World), Zach Woods (In the Loop, The Office), Kumail Nanjiani (Franklin & Bash, Portlandia), Martin Starr (Freaks and Geeks, Party Down), Josh Brener (Glory Daze, The Internship), Christopher Evan Welch (The Master, Vicky Cristina Barcelona) and Amanda Crew (Jobs, Charlie St. Cloud). Matt Ross (Magic City, HBO’s Big Love) guest stars. Silicon Valley was created by Mike Judge, John Altschuler and Dave Krinsky; executive produced by Mike Judge, Alec Berg, John Altschuler, Dave Krinsky, Michael Rotenberg and Tom Lassally; and produced by Jim Kleverweis and Chrisann Verges. I met the owner of a great little bookstore who Canberra International Film Festival acknowledges the financial assistance of showed me a cookbook (she said her mother swore by it) called Talk About Good. Why am I talking about Creole cooking and a book? Because this year’s Festival feels like it has all the right ingredients and recipes – a gumbo for every palate – talk about good! The festival has expanded considerably – 75 screenings, 41 films, Founding Partner Major Partners 12 days – and served from the state-of-the-art facilities at the Dendy Cinemas and Arc Cinema. Screenings at the NFSA are legendary, and this year there are 5 totally gourmet selections, including Fassbinder’s epic. Another new ingredient is that most days will have screenings from lunch through to supper, so there’s an opportunity for everyone to taste what the world has to offer. Each day is jam packed with cinematic delights. The Festival is only made possible through the commitment of our dedicated partners. The University of Canberra, our founding partner, continues its support, as does DHL Worldwide Express Corporate Partners who constantly amaze us by how swiftly they transport prints around the globe.

  • Spring 2015 Our Special Guest of Honor: Jane Alexander
The Fellows Gazette Volume 67 Published by the College of Fellows of the American Theatre Spring 2015 Our Special Guest of Honor: Jane Alexander Last fall, Fellow Bonnie Nelson Schwartz, Chair of the GALA committee, invited Jane Alexander to be Guest of Honor at our 50th Anniversary GALA. At the time, Alexander thought she had a conflict with a proposed film project and asked to delay her answer. On December 15, she gave the College a Christmas gift, writing “I am free now to say yes to the lovely invitation.” Jane attended Beaver Country Day School in the 50s, an all-girls facility, just outside of Boston, where she first discovered acting and made her stage debut as an adolescent in a production of Treasure Island. She studied math as well as theater at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York, where she thought computer programming might be a convenient alternative in case her acting dreams fell through. However, a chance to study at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, wherein she became a member of the Edinburgh University Dramatic Society, dissolved any other career interests except theatre. Jane was triumphant in 1967 when chosen to play the mistress of black boxer Jack Jefferson in the landmark production of The Great White Hope at the Arena Stage in Washington DC, opposite James Earl Jones. She and Jones both won Tony and Drama Desk Awards for their performances when the play went to Broadway the following year. Both also earned Academy Award nominations after making the transition to film. The Great White Hope (1970) would mark the first of four nominations for Jane.
