Dull Disasters? How Planning
Public Disclosure Authorized Public Disclosure Authorized Public Disclosure Authorized Public Disclosure Authorized OUP CORRECTED PROOF – FINAL, 1/4/2016, SPi DULL DISASTERS? OUP CORRECTED PROOF – FINAL, 1/4/2016, SPi ‘With innovations in science and finance, making disasters ‘dull’ must be our aim. Shocks don’t need to become full blown disasters, if we better anticipate and pre-plan for shocks, and reinforce local response capacity. The World Humanitarian Summit and what flows from it provide a key opportunity to make this happen.’ Stephen O’Brien, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, United Nations Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs ‘A thought-provoking book with a selection of excellent ideas for managing risks. For a country like Ethiopia subject to frequent drought the ideas on planning for and managing shocks in advance makes sense. Climate change makes it even more likely that the frequency of these shocks will increase in the future, and we need to plan for this. This kind of approach, linking the public and private sector in insuring and financing disasters, gives us much to take away and consider.’ Sufian Ahmed, Adviser to the Prime Minister of Ethiopia; Former Minister of Finance, Ethiopia ‘This book is a timely and valuable contribution to an important global conversation on addressing risk and vulnerability. Disasters are becoming more severe and the impact of climate change—the ultimate threat multiplier—is exacerbating food insecurity, water scarcity, conflict and migration. In Dull Disasters?, the authors offer a persuasive message: today’s disasters need leaders who do not just respond emotionally and energetically to crises, but leaders who use political, legal, and financial mechanisms that result in better preparedness.’ Gloria Grandolini, Sr. -

In the United States, Muslim women find ways to negotiate their identities, express their concerns, and learn through their faith by means of Islamic scholarship, Islamic feminism, and reinterpretations of the Quran. They are reconciling their multifaceted identities with better understanding of sacred text as well as solidifying their desired gender roles within their communities. They are challenging norms and creating new spaces for themselves within the ummah as well as the United States. American Muslim women find courage, strength, and autonomy through Islamic feminist traditions, solidarity with like-minded men and women from their own and other faith traditions, and community-based outreach programs fueled by their faith and compassion. -
Administration of Donald J. Trump, 2019 Remarks at the Otay Mesa
Administration of Donald J. Trump, 2019 Remarks at the Otay Mesa Border Wall Site and an Exchange With Reporters in San Diego, California September 18, 2019 The President. Yes, why don't you start, Kevin? And this has been a very exciting project, as you know. It's—for many years, people have wanted the proper wall, and we have a wall that— the likes of which, very few places have ever seen. And I want to thank all of the people. General Semonite from the Army Corps of Engineers, we're working very closely with them. I want to thank Kevin and all of your staff—— Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Kevin K. McAleenan. Thank you, sir. The President. ——because what they've done is beyond. And I wanted to show you some of the details of the wall. You can say—you can see a pretty good view. This is going to be close to 500 miles by the time we finish. Those are the areas that are most important. After we're completed five—that should be done pretty close to next year. Over—it will be over 400 miles. And we think we can get it close to 500 miles by the end of next year, depending on certain terrain conditions. But we're doing all of the most important areas. We have a lot of natural barriers, like mountains and streams and rivers and some pretty vicious and violent rivers, actually. But it's an amazing project. And I think what I'd like you to do is, if you could explain the interior of these pipes. -
Parker String Quartet Shines with Electric Concert Performance by STEVE HICKEN
10/8/13: For Immediate Release Lesley Bannatyne 617-495-2791 [email protected] Internationally Acclaimed Parker Quartet Named Blodgett Quartet-in-Residence at Harvard University Music Department The Harvard University Department of Music is delighted to announce that the Parker Quartet will join the music department teaching faculty at Harvard University beginning in the fall of 2014. “Thanks to the Blodgett Artists-in-Residence Program, we have been fortunate to have had a Quartet-in-Residence for four weeks a year since 1985,” said Music Department chair Alexander Rehding. “However, the role of performance in the music department and the University has changed significantly, and this is the right time to bring professional musicians to campus as full-time residents. We are confident that the extended exposure to the string quartet will be highly beneficial to our students, especially our many talented undergraduate performers, allowing them to engage in the practice of chamber music on an unprecedented scale. We welcome the Parker Quartet to Harvard with immense pleasure.” The renowned Parker Quartet (Daniel Chong, Ying Xue, violin; Jessica Bodner, viola; Kee- Hyun Kim, cello) will, as part of the expanded Blodgett residency, present free concerts each year for the general public and recitals as part of the Dean’s Noontime concert series. They will teach, participate in class demonstrations, read and perform student compositions, and coach Harvard undergraduate chamber ensembles in weekly master classes for Harvard credit. The Parker Quartet’s full time presence in the program will allow for the expansion of the chamber music and performance study opportunities for students in the Harvard University Music Department. -
