Al Baker Assembly #35 Newsletter Al Baker Assembly #35 Newsletter President: Joe Quitoni Scribe: Darryl Bielski Vice President: Ryan Dutcher [email protected] Treasurer: Frank Monaco www.sam35.com Secretary: Kathie Cvitkovac Assembly #35 Facebook Page President's Words Write on Que 5/8/2020 Dear members and friends, I hope that you are all staying healthy and coping with the stress and challenges of the new world we now live in. There is nothing new here, we have been staying busy working on the 3 restoration projects we have at the shop. Otherwise, it’s to the shop and back home. I bid in the Potter & Potter auction last Saturday and won 3 lots. A set of Karrell Fox books all signed to Johnny Thompson, 20 L&L books out of his collection and a deck of cards inside a glass bottle with a branch and dove with a plaque to Johnny. The prices his things brought was out of sight! His set of engraved cups & balls brought 12,000.00 dollars YES 12,000.00 Dollars. 2 of his egg bags fetched $5000.00 each, people just wanted something that was his. I am one of them, for me, that was the Karrell Fox books. When I just got into magic, Dawn & I went on a magic cruise Karrell Fox & Bev Bergeron were two of the guest magicians onboard. So, we met them both & ended up spending hours with Karrel Fox teaching me magic. So, I have all his books autographed to me. When Tom Mullica passed, I was able to buy a set of Karrell Fox books autographed to Tom, so keeping the tradition, I really wanted that set of books, and happy to say I got them. You can almost see a pattern starting. So, our meeting is being canceled again. If things loosen up, maybe we’ll make up the meetings in July & August. I am not sure but will keep you all posted. This coming week on Wednesday the 13th David Haines will be on the 4th International Stars of Magic Livestream from the Greg Frewin Theatre in Niagara Falls at 7:00 pm Check out the line up of magicians Joe Devlin, Shawn Farquhar, Nathan Burton, Patrick Kun, David & Dania, Jon Dorenbos, Bruno Tarnecci, Matthew Laslo, Mike Robinson, Bill Cook, Titou, Oh yes, David Haines too. Check it out at Greg Frewin theatre https://youtu./Q2wERvilVG8 it’s going to be a good show. There are a lot of great interviews & shows on Facebook, every night someone is on live. check out FranzHararysQuarantinetalk/facebook. Adrian Smith, then current Dean of the Society of American Magicians. At the time, Harold as he was known to his friends, had the largest magic library in the world. Often Harold was a dinner guest at our house and as usual after our meal “the boys” would discuss magic and collecting. Harold’s plan for his books and ephemera was to donate it all to his alma mater, Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. As we all know that’s what happened to his collection. Ed on the other hand disagreed with Harold’s plan and said that when the time came for him to dissolve his library he wanted everything to be sold; so that other collectors could enjoy what he had amassed.

  • With Walter Zaney Blaney
Anthony Darkstone Brook In Conversation With Walter Blaney The following article was written way back in 2002 and as the saying goes, it has, “withstood the test of time” . Since then, Rory Johnson, who wrote an article on Walter for MAGIC magazine used this article as a basis for his feature. In 2008, I was greatly honored when at the Texas Association of Magicians Convention, I was invited to Produce & Host a Live Talk Show with Walter as the main guest. Other guests on my show were Trixie Bond, Scott Wells, MarcoM, Chuck Lehr , Bruce Kalver , Frances Willard, Glen Falkenstien, Bill Palmer, Walter’s daughters Beck Blaney, Dr.Carol Blaney and Gold Medal Champion Shannon Blaney. And, last but not least, David Copperfield who was a Live phone-in guest. The photos accompanying this article depict some of those wonderful moments. Anthony Darkstone Brook In Conversation With Walter Blaney The phrase, ‘World Class Entertainer’ can only truly be applied to an elite few notable magicians. In the vanguard of that group one name resonates with singular clarity. That name is Walter Blaney. In more ways than one Walter Blaney stands tall in the world of magic. His 6ft – 6inch frame houses the presence of a formidable performer, creative genius and the inventive mind of some of magic’s greatest stage illusions. Lance Burton, David Copperfield, Paul Daniels and Sylvan are just a few of the world’s leading magicians that have used Walter’s magical creations in their shows. David Copperfield is quoted as saying that one of his favorite illusions is none other than Walter Blaney’s – Ladder Levitation.

Magic Messenger The Official Newsletter of the Ann Arbor Magic Club I.B.M. Ring 210 November 2017 S.A.M. Assembly 88 President’s Corner by John Russell I’ve been trying to challenge all of us (myself definitely included) to take a look at our performances and take them to the next level. A very careful, self-critical examination of what we do and how we do it, is so important that if we can’t bring ourselves to do it, we might want to ask a trusted colleague to help us out. Too often, we get comfortable with our routines and presentations and “can’t see the forest for the trees”, so to speak. And if we’re busy, we can always fall back on the fatal statement, “well, I do more shows than what’s-his-face, so I must be doing ok”. One technique is to video record some shows, then go back over them and see what was actually happening and what the audience reaction was. (BTW, you do pay attention to your audiences, right? Every good speaker, entertainer, magician, or presenter I know, carefully watches their audiences and when they start to lose them, takes steps to bring them back.) Another technique is to watch other magicians perform. How do they interact with their audiences? How do they handle prop management? How do they work with stagecraft? How do they present their routines? That’s what struck me last month as we hosted Gordon Russ’s show and lecture. His show was so over the top with energy, that it immediately made me rethink the description of my show as “high-energy”.

I He never wore his collecting on his sleeve and would certainly have argued that he was an accumulator rather than anything else. But in actual fact, in the course of one of the most influential magical careers of the latter half of the twentieth humour and pervasive sense of fun, his dedication knew no century, he built up in company with his wife and writing bounds. I recall his habit of rehearsing the cups and balls on an partner Regina what at the moment of his demise could be almost daily basis. He had no intention of working this before seen as a collection of the most important kind, a monument an audience himself; he simply saw the trick as the open sesame to such a career and a repository of objects that fed his thought to understanding almost all you need to know about the practice processes and fired his enthusiasms.
