Nationally Significant 20th-Century Architecture Revised date 20/07/2011 Governor Phillip Tower, Museum of Sydney and First Government House Place Address 1 Farrer Place and 41 Bridge Street, Sydney, NSW, 2000 Practice Denton Corker Marshall Designed 1989 Completed 1993 (GPT) 1995 (MoS) History & The site of Governor Phillip Tower, Museum of Sydney & First Government Description House Place are located on a city block bounded by Bridge, Phillip, Bent & Young Streets in Sydney's CBD. Together with the Governor Macquarie Tower First Government House & the heritage listed terraces fronting Young & Phillip Streets the site was the Place with Museum of subject of an international design competition held in 1988, of which the primary Sydney & Governor Phillip aim was to conserve the archaeological resource of the First Government Tower behind, terraces to House which investigations of 1983-85 had revealed to lie beneath the northern portion of the block & extending into the road reserves of Young, Bridge & either side. Source: City of Phillip Streets. The cultural significance of the place shaped the development Sydney Model Makers. for the site: the conservation of the archaeological site of First Government . House & the Victorian terrace housing. To satisfy this & the commercial imperatives of maximising tower floor plate areas, the scheme incorporated several innovative approaches. Firstly in the urban design: the conception of First Government House Place as an 'urban room', achieved by setting back the Governor Phillip Tower from Bridge Street, enabled the archaeological site to be conserved, interpreted & celebrated, & served to ennoble the space with the presence of the imposing colonial sandstone buildings to either side; the public link from Phillip Street to Farrer Place, & the setbacks provided to the terraces. -

CAAP Artist Lab Participants BIOGRAPHIES LENA CRUZ Lena is a graduate of the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. Theatre highlights include her debut as Jenny in The Threepenny Opera for Western Australian Opera, Lady Macbeth in Macbeth for Bell Shakespeare, Mother Courage for Belvoir, Monkey- Journey to the West for Theatre of Image, Miss Bell in Fame, Hair, and creating the role of Cynthia in the original production of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert the Musical. Most recently, she has appeared in STC’s The Wharf Revue. Film and television highlights include starring as Rory Van Dyke in The Wannabes, Margarita in The Night We Called it A Day, Cassandra in Upskirt, Sofia Martinez in Shortland Street, Pet in Bargain Coast, Jody Lim in Dirt Game, Comedy Inc, Watch With Mother, All Saints, The Very Trevor Ashley Show, and Kiki and Kitty. She has co- written and co-starred in the cabarets The Singer’s Guide To The Universe, About Face, and one-woman shows I’m A Stranger Here Myself directed by Tony Sheldon and Bitter Sweet, for which she was nominated for the Sydney Fringe Festival Drum Media Show-Stopping Individual Performance Award and the Best Of People’s Choice Award. HAPPY FERAREN Happy Feraren is a Filipino actor and improviser based in Sydney with 11 years experience. She has performed in over 500 shows in a wide range of improvisational theatre formats both locally and internationally (including Manila, Sydney, Hong Kong, Amsterdam, Chicago and New York). In the Philippines, she began as a presenter for national radio and television as well as live events and was a supporting actor in the feature film ‘My Candidate’. -

Artists Bea CAMACHO • Donna ONG • Grace TAN • Savanhdary VONGPOOTHORN Discrete Encoding Essay by Khim ONG __________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ Essay Humans have pondered over questions of perception for as long as they were conscious of their ability to see and attempt to make intelligible their visual experience of the world. Thinkers have long argued over ideas of perceptual experiences, the relation between appearance and reality, how we could possibly gain knowledge of the real world as perceived through the senses, oscillating between analytical and empirical theories. It is the indeterminacy of the senses that problems in perception arise and continues to intrigue. How do we capture visual impressions that are fleeting, subjective, contingent on the conditions at the moment of perceiving, and translate them into knowledge about the world and ourselves? Computer vision, developed since the 1960s with the intention of automating the functions of the human visual system, may offer one illustration of how this is performed. A methodological process that involves developing theoretical and algorithmic systems to obtain visual understanding through acquiring, processing and analysing visual data, fields and shades of colour are analysed according to their spatial relation, scale-space, textual and through extraction of edges and lines. These encoded data simulate a visual field through which numerical, and other information can be obtained and serve as data source for further analysis and use, for instance, in related fields of artificial intelligence, information engineering, neurobiology, and so on. Such a scientific model of acquiring visual data opens up new understandings of how we see and the way we comprehend what we see, making them concrete, describable, and manipulatable. -

Sydney Festival is an explosion of theatre, dance, music, exhibitions and talks that takes over the city, celebrating uniquely Australian work as well as welcoming companies from all over the world. The Festival prides itself on its free large-scale outdoor events, including concerts and performances and even a ferry race on Sydney’s iconic harbour. NSW Premier and Minister for Western Sydney Barry O’Farrell said, “Sydney Festival creates a welcoming and unique global atmosphere that showcases our beautiful city through a feast of performances in theatre, music, dance and visual arts. “Whether it’s in Campbelltown or Chippendale, Parramatta or Walsh Bay, I urge Sydneysiders and visitors alike to take advantage of all Sydney Festival has to offer’” Mr O’Farrell said. Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP, Chair of Sydney Festival said, “Sydney Festival is one of our most loved events and sets the tone for summer in the city. The Festival makes it easy for Sydneysiders to experience the best performing, visual and experimental arts that Australia and the world have to offer. “Festivals and other events contribute to our local economy – they encourage people to stay in our hotels, eat at our restaurants, visit our top attractions, shop and enjoy all our City has to offer.” Ms Moore said. TOP EDUCATION STUDENT FIELD TRIP INSTITUTE SEMESTER 1/2019 SYDNEY GOVERNMENT HOUSE SYDNEY GOVERNMENT HOUSE Government House is the Official Residence and Office of His Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Ret’d) 38th Governor of New South Wales and Mrs Linda Hurley. His Excellency is the 27th Governor to occupy this Government House and has held the position since 2 October 2014. In 1788, soon after a British settlement was established at Sydney Cove, the first Governor of the colony of New South Wales, Governor Arthur Phillip, laid the foundations of Sydney’s first Government House. This building was located in Bridge Street (on the site of the Museum of Sydney). After nearly 50 years of serving as the colony’s political, ceremonial and social centre, the building had become worn and dilapidated and many submissions were made to the British government for permission and funding to construct a new building. In 1836 construction finally began on a new Government House. The new building was influenced in its location and architectural style by the existing Governor’s Stables, completed in 1821 (now the Conservatorium of Music located at the main entry gates to Government House). Locally quarried sandstone was used for the construction. The building was designed by Edward Blore, architect to William IV and Queen Victoria. Blore had recently built the British Houses of Parliament in an Elizabethan Gothic style, expressing the continuity of government by constitutional monarchy. Blore had also worked on Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle. The new Government House was built in the Gothic Revival style characterized by castellated towers and other medieval features. -

No images? Click here Australian Made: Sydney Festival 2021 + Australian Design Centre Sydney Festival 2021 has launched its Australian Made program. In his fifth and final year as Festival Director, Wesley Enoch’s program focuses on recovering, reconnecting and reinvigorating Australia’s artists and communities after this challenging year for the creative sector. This year the festival will celebrate the best that Australia has to offer with our internationally acclaimed artists and creative companies presenting new theatre, dance, live music and much more. The people of Sydney are invited to enjoy and explore over 140 events, performances, exhibitions, talks and experiences, many of them free, during 6 – 26 January. We are delighted to announce that Australian Design Centre is part of this exciting program. We are presenting two exhibitions, multiple workshops, maker talks and a special Sydney Festival edition of our renowned Makers Market. On show from 26 November 2020 is the exhibition Isolate | Make: Creative Resilience in a Pandemic. In response to Covid-19, we invited nine makers to participate in this project. Working across a diversity of practice, these local makers share their creative process and final works made during Covid-19. During the Festival in January there will be a range of artist talks and workshops. Join paper engineer Benja Harney for a creative papermaking workshop on Wednesday 20 January 2021 and take a relaxed clay workshop with artist and ceramicist Glenn Barkley on Thursday 21 January 2021. Also launching 26 November 2020, Design Isolate explores how creative practice may have changed for makers during this year either as a result of social isolation, the associated restrictions and production challenges, or simply in response to the tragic global events.
