How Winning the Voice Is Only Half the Struggle
How winning The Voice is only half the struggle AS reality TV singing shows struggle to produce bankable stars, a previous winner of The Voice Australia has revealed why coming first didn’t guarantee him success. WINNING a singing show used to be a guaranteed path to music success, propelling the likes of Guy Sebastian and Stan Walker to national stardom. But while shows such as The Voice Australia remain popular with TV audiences, recent iterations have struggled to produce bankable talent. Despite being crowned this year’s winner, The Voice’s Sam Perry saw his single bomb on the ARIA charts, debuting at no. 78 with just 2414 sales. Perry’s lacklustre sales even prompted one music expert to tell The Daily Telegraphthat he advised budding artists not to go on reality TV. “They’re expected to do in a matter of weeks and months what most artists have done over a number of years,” The Music’s group managing editor Andrew Mast said. For The Voice season two winner Harrison Craig, his rendition of Unchained Melody debuted at No. 2 on the ARIA charts in 2013. Since then the Melbourne based musician has continued to work consistently with three albums, four national tours and a new music project, Vice Dreams, launching this month. Now 23, Craig told news.com.au that while The Voice Australia had been an amazing opportunity, it didn’t guarantee success. “There’s no right or wrong way to go about a music career. There are harder ways and there are easier ways but no one way is going to offer you a career next week, next year or in the next 10 years,” he said. -

Platformed Racism: the Adam Goodes War Dance and Booing Controversy on Twitter, Youtube, and Facebook
PLATFORMED RACISM: THE ADAM GOODES WAR DANCE AND BOOING CONTROVERSY ON TWITTER, YOUTUBE, AND FACEBOOK Ariadna Matamoros-Fernández BA Autonomous University of Barcelona MA University of Amsterdam Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Digital Media Research Centre Creative Industries Faculty Queensland University of Technology 2018 Keywords Platformed racism Race Racism Whiteness Critical Race Theory Colour-blindness Digital platforms Twitter Facebook YouTube Social media Technocultures Memetic culture Media practices Visual media Multiplatform issue mapping Platform governance i ii Abstract This research interrogates the material politics of social media platforms, and their role in online racism. Platforms have altered how people search, find, and share information, and how social interactions take place online. This new era of user practices, micro-communication cultures, and an increasing algorithmic shaping of sociability, opens up new research endeavours to understand communication as a cultural practice. While platforms are reluctant to acknowledge that they work as media companies, and present themselves as being ‘neutral’, they intervene in public discourse through their design, policies, and corporate decisions. This intervention is increasingly under public scrutiny at a time when racist and sexist speech is thriving online. The entanglement between user practices and platforms in the reinforcement of racism is the focus of my research. Specifically, I argue that this entanglement -

Heritier Lumumba Reclaimed His Name and Found Strength in African History
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Heritier Lumumba reclaimed his name and found strength in African history. Will it change Collingwood and the AFL? By Russell Jackson 5 Dccember 2020 Former Collingwood star Heritier Lumumba now lives in South Los Angeles, where he's surrounded by black culture and thought.(Supplied: Renae Wootson/Milan Wiley) On May 31, 2020, a sea of people filled the streets of the Fairfax District in Los Angeles. Five police helicopters circled above their heads. Two LAPD squad cars were set alight and burned. Days earlier, the world had watched George Floyd take his last breaths. Now emotions reached boiling point — anger expressed in a cacophony of dissent. Riot police arrived with rubber bullets, batons and tear gas. Played through car windows and chanted by the crowd was the anthem of the uprising, YG and Nipsey Hussle's 'FDT': "F*** Donald Trump!" Two hundred metres away, a 33-year-old man and his wife anxiously peered out their window, their one-year-old son playing with a toy truck. In the days that followed, they 2 would join the crowds on the streets of LA, demanding an end to the dehumanisation of black lives. In another time, the man achieved fame as a sporting champion in a foreign land — an All-Australian footballer, a premiership hero of the Collingwood Football Club. Now he marched upright, a bandana shielding his face from the pandemic sweeping the planet, a Congolese flag draped over his shoulders. "I read the words 'BLACK LIVES MATTER', surrounding me at every angle imaginable, and my mind turned to my family in the Democratic Republic of Congo," Heritier Lumumba says.
