  • Jewish Baseball by Justice Robert E
Jewish Baseball by Justice Robert E. Gordon The Jewish players in the major leagues are: 1. Ryan Braun, age 34, Milwaukee Brewers outfielder in a 12-year career. Ryan’s father was born in Israel and Ryan became the 24th player to combine 300-plus homers with 200-plus stolen bases. Ryan will eclipse Hank Greenberg’s 331 homeruns this year. He was nine short at the start of the year. 2. Alex Bregman, age 24, Houston Astros third-baseman, was named Most Valuable Player in the American League in the All-Star Game in 2018, and finished 5th for the American League Most Valuable Player Award. Alex was a first-round draft pick. 3. Richard Bleier, age 30, is a left-handed pitcher for the Baltimore Orioles in his third big-league season, and had a 1.93 ERA last year. He had season-ending surgery and is on the DL. 4. Max Fried, age 24, is a left-handed pitcher for the Atlanta Braves, and is a promising star with a low ERA and may be one of the best relief pitchers in baseball. Max is a former first-round draft pick. 5. Ty Kelly, age 29, was a star for Team Israel, but this infielder and outfielder has yet to show such promise for the New York Mets. 6. Ian Kinsler, age 36, had a terrific major-league career as a great second-baseman, but this should be his last year in the majors with the San Diego Padres. 7. Ryan Lavarnway, age 30, a catcher, was a star on Team Israel, but has yet shown such promise for the Pittsburgh Pirates and now with the New York Yankees.

Analyzing Managerial Efficiency in Major League Baseball: A Sabermetric Approach Jebediah C. Clarke A Thesis Submitted to Department of Economics Skidmore College In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirement for a B.A. Degree Thesis Advisor: Joerg Bibow May 3rd, 2016 Abstract Modern statistical analysis has allowed for teams to more accurately measure Major League Baseball player performance. However, other than tracing wins there are few ways to track the performance of on-field managers whose strategies, decisions, and expertise fundamentally influence the outcome of each game. I begin this paper by investigating and critiquing prior empirical analyses that have attempted to quantify the effect of managerial skill on team performance. Using Stochastic Frontier Analysis and data from the 2008-2015 MLB seasons, I expand on previous research by calculating managerial efficiency estimates while including control variables that better objectively measure player performance. I find that the least efficient managers achieve winning percentages that are around 80% of what is possible, given their players’ talent level.

In his 15th year of consideration from the Baseball Writers Association of America, the longtime Tiger legend once again fell short of the 75% needed for induction to Cooperstown, earning 40.9% of the vote. “It’s flattering and honoring just to be talked about it,” Trammell said recently. “And I know that as a player, I could hold my own.” Two players were inducted by the writers this evening: Centerfielder Ken Griffey, Jr., with 99.3% of the vote and catcher Mike Piazza, with 83%. Tigers manager Brad Ausmus did not receive a vote. Trammell, 57, was a career .285 hitter in 20 major league seasons – all in Detroit. Voting results for the Baseball Hall of Fame He hit 185 home runs, stole 236 bases, was a six-time All-Star with four Gold Glove Awards, three Silver Slugger Awards and a World Series Most Valuable Player in 1984 to his name.
