SPC Sport Report – Term 4, Week 2

Welcome back to sport at SPC. Term 4 sees the commencement of summer sports and some non-mainstream sports.

Boys need to be listening to the morning messages to know when sign up meetings are happening as all Term 4 Sport will commence in week two and three, it would be great to see as many boys as possible taking to the sporting field.

Cricket

1st XI Trip to Mildura 2019 Our 1st XI cricketers ventured to Mildura for two nights with Mr Biggin and Mr Corden in charge, it is great to give our boys the opportunity to play some early season cricket on turf in sunny weather.

Day 1 Our first cricket event for the season saw an early departure from SPC at 6am for the long trip to Mildura. Upon arriving to 25 degrees and sunshine we started our warmup for our first T20 match against an Under 18 Murray Mallee squad. Losing the toss, we were sent out to bowl first. Kento Dobell and James Martindale opened the bowling restricting the home side for the first few overs before James picked up the first in the 4th over, to have the score at 1/13, his 2nd wicket and then to Jonte Jarred and Alex Kerr, had the home team in trouble at 4/46 after 11 overs. Despite 2 wickets to Noah Steenhuis, some lower order runs helped them to reach 6/95 after their 20 overs.

Paddy Tuddenham and Riley Huxtable opened the , and got through the first 5 overs, before Riley fell for 7. Kyle Smith only made 3, then the skipper Noah Steenhuis was run out without scoring after a direct hit from his own team mate Spence Jenks, who along with Isaac Hucker was helping Murray Mallee who were 2 players short. Lachie Constable then stepped up and batted superbly hitting 43 off only 33 balls, but once Tuddenham 21 and Constable were out, we struggled. With 14 balls remaining we needed 15, but with new batsman coming in they were unable to get the job done, as we finished on 7/86

Day 2 With weather expected to reach 30 plus, the boys were hoping for an improved performance. Again, we lost the toss and this time against the Murray Mallee Under 16 squad in a 50 over match we were sent in to bat. Lachie Constable and Paddy Tuddenham continued their strong form from day 1 and got us off to a great start putting on 81 runs before Paddy was out for 32. Lachie continued to bring up his half century and looked like he could score big. But with the score at 1/118 he was eventually for 68, this saw a mini collapse as we fell to 9 for 137. Tom Appleton then arrived to provide great resistance and helped support Jonte Jarred (37) who provided some late hitting to get us to a very respectable 188.

As the temperature reached 32 degrees we went out to bowl. Martindale and Dobell again opened a wicket in the 1st over from Dobell and then another from Martindale in the 5th over helped to build the pressure as they struggled early to be 2/6 after 4 overs. Skipper for this match Kyle Smith then used the opportunity to share the ball around and used 9 different bowlers during the day. With the match always seemingly under control Kento Dobell’s 4 for 27 off 7 overs ensured they were dismissed for 154.

Day 3 With the prospect of a long drive home, we started the day nice and early with a 9am start. Trying our 3rd skipper for the trip in Spence Jenks, we again lost the toss and were sent out to bowl against the Murray Mallee Under 16 squad in a T20 match. The heat proved to be taking a toll on the boys as we bowled 18 wides for the day, to help extras to be the top scorer. Despite all of the wides we were able to restrict them to 82 as we bowled them out in the final over.

Chasing 83 for victory, we changed around the batting order. Although the early wickets of Smith and Dobell caused a bit of concern. Noah Steenhuis (37 off 36) provided the steadying influence. With us seemingly cruising to victory, things became a bit tight towards the end of the innings and the tension was building. With 1 over remaining we needed 4 runs for victory. After scoring 3 off the first 4 balls we just needed 1 to win. But when Jonte Jarred was caught, we needed 1 to win off the final ball. This was a moment for the skipper to stand up and take control. Spence Jenks strode to the wicket with one job to do, hit and sprint. As the field moved in closer and closer the pressure built. But Spence held firm and managed to get the ball away and sprinted and dived to seal the victory.

Overall the boys had a great trip and were involved in 3 pretty good contests and have got their season off to a bright start. Thanks to the Murray Mallee cricket squads for hosting us and providing us with a great opportunity to play on turf wickets so early in the season. Thanks also to Director of Cricket Luke Corden for his dedication to the cricket program and providing our students with the opportunity to travel and play against different opposition.

Squash & Racquetball 12-09-19 Thursday the 12th of September saw representation of St Patrick’s College boys in all grade finals of the BAS Squash and Racquetball competition for 2019, and it is fair to write that we somewhat dominated, by sheer numbers, the competition this year. The season has been ably led by our year 12’s, Captain Lachlan Black and Vice-Captain Broden Haintz who oversaw five teams of four lads participate in a vibrant but friendly competition versus our traditional opponents of Ballarat and Clarendon College, Ballarat Grammar and Loreto College. The term started strong with 21 students keen for a spot in the 4-person racquetball teams, but we soon dwindled to 15 or 16 students. Some boys were only too happy to double up on games each week to keep the competition alive. My thanks to all the boys who ‘stepped up’ each week to ensure the opponents didn’t get a walk-over match result. Several of our lads were all too keen to play both sports and quickly adapted between the long and short racquet games of squash and racquetball. With a seasonal statistical win-loss ratio of 2:1 we were very much on a winning streak for the racquetball weekly contests and the whispers amongst the students and staff was one of St Pat’s on target to win the oversized trophy – and that we did. Miles Thomas, from year 10 gallantly contested the B-grade squash final vs BCC in a healthy match finishing runner-up with a score of 7-10 in game one and 5 -10 in game two. The A-grade squash final was exceptionally close with Broden Haintz losing the first match 5-10 but clawing a win in the second 10-4 to win by a single point, totalling a 15-14 win. The C-grade racquetball team consisted of two players, Eden Revell from year 10 and year 7 lad Bailey O’Sullivan-Irvin, who happily played 2 games each to win the final 5 games to 3. The B-grade racquetball final saw our year 10 lads contest hard against Ballarat and Clarendon College in an admiral defeat with only 2 games won of the 10. Henry Von Burg rose to the occasion winning both his games on the day 15-13 and 15-14, whereas Lachlan Fowler, Miles Thomas and Josh Keddie all missed out on success on this occasion. The play-off for the B-grade 3rd and 4th position was a triumphant contest by our team against Ballarat Grammar with a win of 3 games to 1. Angus Pascoe of yr.10 had a close win in both matches, 15-14 for each while and Damian Irvin of year 8 ended one up one down with final scores at 7-15 and 15-8. Grammar were also two players short of a team and we agreed to only play 2 of the 4 matches, without doubling up in a final. Our A-grade racquetball team played Grammar and were convincingly successful with a strong win of 6 games to 2. We were one player short with year 8 Lee Greenwood being an absent member, but Year 10 Matthew Fillisch played 2 matches winning 15-4, 15-8 and 15- 3, 15-1. VC Broden Haintz was saving his energy for the squash final but still won convincingly 15-4, and 15-8, whereas Capt. Lachlan Black was out played by Grammar’s #1 player, 9-15 and 12-15. All players, parents and staff should be exceptionally proud of the consistent efforts of our Paddy-boys, all engaged in the spirit of the BAS competition through the term, willing to learn the ropes and willing to go above and beyond in keeping the competition energetic and lively. We are all hoping to continue this winning streak into 2020 and beyond. 2019 teams

Western Highway Late Bus The College will continue to offer a late bus service, leaving at 6:00pm, for students who participate in after school co-curricular activities here at the college, not just sport. Application forms are available from Student Services in the ERC. Once registered students need to place their name on the late bus register no later than recess on the day of travel. All inquiries please contact Glenis in the ERC. This service will not be offered in the first and last week of term.

SPC Sport Uniform All sport uniforms can be purchased at the College Shop. Students need to ensure they are in the correct uniform to participate. The general sport uniform is the navy blue polo top, navy shorts and white socks. Certain sports will require very specific clothing e.g. 1st XI Cricketers require SPC Whites, SPC cricket shirt and SPC cricket cap. Students should check with their coach as to what is required. Also remember to wear sunscreen at all times. I wish all students and coaches the best in 2019. Always play the game in the right spirit, wear the correct uniform and respect the facilities, home and away. St Patrick’s College is steeped in sporting tradition and you are encouraged to add more chapters to our past endeavours. Please do not hesitate to contact myself ([email protected]) at the College with any questions.
