Every gang in the city meets on a sweltering July 4 night in a Bronx park for a peace rally. The crowd of miscreants turns violent after a prominent gang leader is killed and chaos prevails over the attempt at order. The Warriors follows the Dominators making their way back to their home territory without being killed. The police are prowling the city in search of anyone involved in the mayhem. An exhilarating novel that examines New York City teenagers, left behind by society, who form identity and personal strength through their affiliation with their "family," The Warriors weaves together social commentary with ancient legends for a classic coming-of-age tale. Visions of Glory: A History and a Memory of Jehovah’s Witnesses by BARBARA GRIZZUTI HARRISON (September 14, 1934 – April 24, 2002), SIMON AND SHUSTER NEW YORK ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Without the support and generosity of friends and colleagues, and without the gift of time and space provided by the MacDowell Colony, I could not have written this book. For trusting me enough to share intimate details of their lives, I thank David Maslanka, Walter Szykitka--and others who are unnamed, but not unloved. My debt to them is very great. For the invaluable information and advice they gave so freely, I thank Bernard and Charlotte Atkins, Leon Friedman, Ralph deGia, Father Robert Kennedy, Jim Peck. For their creative research and editorial assistance, I thank Tonia Foster and Paul Kelly-and the librarians at the Brooklyn Public Library, who eased their task. For their perceptive insights and criticism, which helped me to understand not only my subject, but myself and my past, I thank Sheila Lehman, Tom Wilson, Sol Yurick, L. L. Zeiger, and David Zeiger. No words can express my gratitude to the members of my family who always listened, even when their patience was sorely tried, and who were emotional bulkwarks when I was sorely tried: Carol Grizzuti, Dominick Grizzuti, Richard Grizzuti; and my children (who managed, with grace, to live with my obsessions), Anna and Joshua Harrison. For Father Michael Crimmins, Alice Hagen, and Rose Moss, who gave me a very special kind of encouragement at a very crucial time, I have love and regard. And finally, I thank and esteem my editor, Alice E.

  • The Sixties and New York City Revisited Spring 2017 Macaulay
The Sixties and New York City Revisited Spring 2017 Macaulay Honors College, CUNY (Preliminary) Syllabus Course Description Welcome to my class! Actually, welcome to a class originally proposed and designed by Professor Ted Widmer for whom I am indebted for some of the ideas in the syllabus that follows. As he wrote This will be an immersive journey through the long, strange trip of the 1960s, concentrating on the central role played by New York City. The course will move chronologically through a decade that still affects us strongly fifty years later, focusing on the dreams that were realized, and those that fell short. I am a visually-oriented social scientist. So, in our “collaboratively” evolving in and out of class experience, we will explore a wide variety of views (visions?) of the Big Apple “then” and now” via print, celluloid, videotape, and electronic media. We will also travel outside the comfort of our classroom to revisit neighborhoods that were iconic in the 1960s such as Greenwich Village and Harlem to see and record how they have changed. Together we will visit museums where we can more leisurely explore art and historical exhibitions about the period. The first thing we will consider in class is how has New York City been the 1960s been characterized? Given the current concern about “fake” news, we should ask “How true or accurate are those depictions?” Everyone I know seems to have a different idea about the celebrated time period, as well as an interesting story or example that they are sure is iconic.

INFORMATION TO USERS This material was produced from a microfilm copy of the original document. While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the original s u b m itte d . The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or "target” for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. You will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sectioning" the material. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue photoing from left to right in equal sections with a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again - beginning below the first row and continuing on until c o m p le te . 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation.

  • Sol Yurick (1925-2013)
Sol Yurick (1925-2013) by Silvia Federici and George Caffentzis Sol Yurick, one of the last great men of the WWII generation of Leftist American writers, is dead. He died on January 5, a few weeks after being diagnosed with lung cancer. His death is an immense loss for us, as Sol belonged to that rare breed of people whose mind is always in the midst of a creative process, always making connections, discovering meanings, creating worlds. He was also a great political comrade, though he would not have been enthusiastic perhaps about our labeling him so. We met Sol in 1979 at a time when we were rallying support for CARI, the Committee Against Repression in Italy, which we formed to counter the attack on the extra- parliamentary movement the Italian government launched in April 7, 1979, which led to mass arrests and a series of infamous accusations against people later found completely innocent. Sol had lived through the McCarthy period and he immediately gave support to our campaign, one of a handful among New York radicals who were not impressed by the Communist Party cooperation with the Italian government in the repression. There, in those first meetings, began a friendship and on our side a love and admiration that has continued through the more than thirty years that we have known each other. It is hard now to imagine that we will not hear any more his voice except through his books and we will not sit at his table as we have done so many times, and engage in one of those conversations that would take us from the Talmud to Chinese history with many digressions into contemporary politics and reminiscences from his personal and political past.

J .t}...... "i i: THE PUBLIC LIBRARY AS A MARKET FOR FIRST NOVELS: AN EXPLORATORY STUDY by Eleanor Blum Institute of Communications Research College of Communications University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign 1969 THE PUBLIC LIBRARY AS A MARKET FOR FIRST NOVELS: AN EXPLORATORY STUDY Part I For the first time in this country the library is becoming a financial force in book publishing, while at the same time the publication and sale of fiction through out the country is generally decreasing. 1 The purpose of this study is to evaluate the role of the public library as a market for first novels and short story collections. From an economic standpoint, a first work of fiction is one of the most vul nerable parts of the literary establishment, particularly if it is the stuff of tomor row's literature -- the quality novel. Most publishers of fiction (many do not handle it at all) consider it a necessary evil, a proving ground for the writer to refine his trade and, hopefully, to build a public. Too, publishers look upon certain first novels as prestige items. But they seldom regard them as money makers; more likely, they regard them as money losers. So publishers bring them out half-heartedly and usually with little promotion, because here is one of the few places where expenses can be cut. Paradoxically, promotion is crucial to call the book to the attention of reviewers and readers. If by some happy chance it thrives, then and only then does the average pub lisher get behind it with hard money.
