Cumulated Bibliography of Biographies of Ocean Scientists Deborah Day, Scripps Institution of Oceanography Archives Revised December 3, 2001 Cumulated Bibliography of Biographies of Ocean Scientists Deborah Day, Scripps Institution of Oceanography Archives Revised December 3, 2001. Preface This bibliography attempts to list all substantial autobiographies, biographies, festschrifts and obituaries of prominent oceanographers, marine biologists, fisheries scientists, and other scientists who worked in the marine environment published in journals and books after 1922, the publication date of Herdman’sFounders o f Oceanography. The bibliography does not include newspaper obituaries, government documents, or citations to brief entries in general biographical sources. Items are listed alphabetically by author, and then chronologically by date of publication under a legend that includes the full name of the individual, his/her date of birth in European style(day, month in roman numeral, year), followed by his/her place of birth, then his date of death and place of death. Entries are in author-editor style following theChicago Manual of Style (Chicago and London: University of Chicago Press, 14th ed., 1993). Citations are annotated to list the language if it is not obvious from the text. Annotations will also indicate if the citation includes a list of the scientist’s papers, if there is a relationship between the author of the citation and the scientist, or if the citation is written for a particular audience. This bibliography of biographies of scientists of the sea is based on Jacqueline Carpine-Lancre’s bibliography of biographies first published annually beginning with issue 4 ofHistory the o f Oceanography Newsletter (September 1992). It was supplemented by a bibliography maintained by Eric L. Mills and citations in the biographical files of the Archives of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UCSD. The following is a partial list of works consulted to compile this bibliography. Damkaer and Tenge Mrozek-Dahl 1 Introduction 15 July 1889 - 11 o'clock—National escorted from Kiel by four steamers, amid many cheers, kisses, and parting speeches by Admiral Illustrious. One of the steamers took the folk on board: Geheimrat Mommsen, and Meyer, Spee, Klein, et al.; the whole Professors' Club was already on the steamer— shaking of hands, emotional farewells, along with the tears of Heaven and the loud cheers of the students on the other steamers. Finally the Minister and the Governor boarded the Stephan. Again the students' ship came nearby, again a Hurrah! from our ship—and off we went (Dahl, diary). So began the expedition which became to plankton research what the Chal- lenger Expedition represents for oceanography in general. It is not the purpose here to compare that plankton expedition with the Challenger Expedition, even though some contemporary critics rejoiced in such comparisons; it was empha- sized at once that the aims of each enterprise were different (du Bois-Reymond 1890). Neither expedition revolutionized techniques, but instead were broader applications of the achievements of an earlier period. The cruise of the National was called the Plankton-Expedition, and something special might have been expected from an expedition that was named for a new world of living beings, rather than for its ship. Certainly no previous endeavor was worthy of that name. The recent discovery of the diary kept by Friedrich Dahl during the Plankton-Expedition prompted us to review the principal results and influence of those early investigations.

The Murman Scientific-Fishery Expedition (1898-1908), organized by a philan­ thropic committee, contributed greatly to the development of oceanography and fish­ ery science in Russia. During the discussion that preceded its organization, special attention was paid to the example set by other European countries concerning the involvement of scientists in the problems of developing their fisheries. The first head of the Expedition, zoologist Nikolai Knipowitsch, established close connections with European marine scientists, which integrated his Expedition into the international community and was crucial for the involvement of Russia in ICES. Negotiations between governmental officials on the question of Russian participation in ICES went on up to the beginning of 1902, but scientific research based on the international pro­ gramme on the specially designed research vessel was already begun by the Expedition in 1900. Scientists with the Expedition tried to balance scientific objec­ tives with applied work, which was the price of governmental support. In spite of this, tension mounted between the Expedition and its patron. Knipowitsch was accused of paying excessive attention to "foreign science", considered detrimental to the interests of Russian fishermen. After his removal, the next head of the Expedition, Leonid Breitfuss, continued the research of the Expedition according to the ICES programme up to 1906 when the Expedition lost its financial support.

Mills Department of Oceanography, Dalhousie University; Halifax, Nova Scotia, B3H 4Jl Canada ABSTRACT: Looking back from the 1990s it seems natural to view the work done in the Biologische Anstalt Helgoland by Friedrich Heincke and his colleagues, beginning in 1892, as marine ecology or marine biology, and that done in Kiel, under Victor Hensen and Karl Brandt, as biological oceanography. But historical analysis shows this view to be untenable. Biological oceanography, as a research category and a profession, does not appear until at least the 1950's. In the German tradition of marine research, "Ozeanographie", originating in 19th century physical geography, did not include the biological sciences. The categories "Meereskunde" and "Meeresforschung" covered all aspects of marine research in Germany from the 1890's to the present day. "Meeresbiologie" like that of Brandt. Heincke, and other German marine scientists, fitted comfortably into these. But in North America no such satisfactory professional or definitional structure existed before the late 1950's. G.A. Riley, one of the first biological oceanographers, fought against descriptive, non- quantitative American ecology. In 1951 he described biological oceanography as the "ecology of marine populations", linking it with quantitative population ecology in the U.S.A. By the end of the 1960's the U.S. National Science Foundation had recognized biological oceanography as a research area supported separately from marine biology. There was no need for the category "biological oceanography" in German marine science because its subject matter lay under the umbrella of "Meereskunde" or "Meeresforschung".

Prof. Haeckers " Plankton Stiulien " first appeared in the Jenaische Zeitschrift., vol. XXV, first and second parts, 1890. It was immediately published in separate form by Gustav Fischer, of Jena, and attracted much attention on the Continent and in England. The subject, "a comi)arative study of the importance and constitution of the marine fauna and flora," is presented in Prof. HiTeckel's usual pleasino- style, and the work can not fail to be of value to all interested in the bio- logical sciences, to the general reader as well as to the specialist. It derives especial interest in connection with the work of the Fish Com- mission, from its broad discussion of those many important elements which enter into the food supply of all pelagic fishes, such as the mackerel and menhaden, and, considering the extensive physical inves- tigations now being conducted in our coast waters by the schooner Granipiis, its publication at the present time will prove exceedingly advantageous. The terminology used by Prof. Haeckel may at first seem formidable, but this difficulty is more fancied than real.
