    Billy Budd Cast Biographies William Burden sang George Bailey in San Francisco Opera’s West Coast premiere of Jake Heggie’s It’s a Wonderful Life in fall 2018. The American tenor made his San Francisco Opera debut in 1992 as Count Lerma in Don Carlo and has returned in roles including Laca in Jenůfa, Tom Rakewell in The Rake’s Progress and he created the roles of Dan Hill in Christopher Theofanidis’ Heart of a Soldier and Peter in Mark Adamo’s The Gospel of Mary Magdalene. An alumnus of the San Francisco Opera’s Merola Opera Program, Burden is a member of the voice faculty at The Juilliard School and the Mannes School of Music. For the purposes of this document, I will make use of the established term low male voice (LMV) while acknowledging that there is a push for the removal of gender from voice classification in the industry out of respect for our trans, non-binary and gender fluid populations. In addition to analysis and summation of musical concepts and content found within each selection, each repertoire selection will include discussions of style, vocal technique, vocalism, and character in an effort to establish routes towards authenticity in the field of musical theatre over the last twenty five years. The explosion of online streaming and online sheet music resources over the last decade enable analysis involving original cast recordings, specific noteworthy performances, and discussions on transposition as it relates to the honoring of character and capability of an individual singer. My experiences with challenges as a young low voice (waiting for upper notes to develop, struggling with resonance strategies above a D♭4) with significant musicianship prowess left me searching for a musically challenging outlet outside of the Bel Canto aesthetic.

    Grammy-Winning Trumpeter Terence Blanchard Performs in Houston Hear the legendary musician and film composer blare his trumpet at the Wortham Center this Saturday. By Chris Becker 4/18/2017 at 4:00pm THROUGHOUT THE ’60S AND ’70S, many jazz musicians started incorporating elements of funk, R&B and psychedelic rock into their music to reflect the social and political changes of the times. The result was a new form of jazz fusion that inspired successful bands like Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters, Weather Report, Chicago, and Earth, Wind & Fire. Today, New Orleans-born trumpeter Terence Blanchard’s new band, The E-Collective, is performing its own hybrid of serious ’70s funk, contemporary R&B and hard rock that speaks to the social and political turmoil of our time. Led by 55-year-old Blanchard, the band’s current lineup features Charles Altura (guitar), Fabian Almazan (piano, keyboards), David Ginyard Jr. (bass), Oscar Seaton (drums) and Tondrae Kemp (vocals). Soaring above this groove-centric ensemble is Blanchard’s trumpet, a custom-designed, full-weight RAJA made by Monette, sometimes augmented with harmonized delay to create wild, otherworldly textures, but never at the cost of his rich, expressive tone. This Saturday, Blanchard and The E-Collective take the stage at the Wortham Center’s Cullen Theater, and will no doubt set the roof on fire (figuratively speaking). For those who only know Blanchard as a skilled master of classic jazz, The E-Collective may sound like a departure. Whether tearing it up on the Mary J. Blige-esque ballad “Shutting Down,” which was sung on the album by singer and Maroon 5 keyboardist PJ Morton, or channeling his inner Star Child on the majestic “Cosmic Warrior,” Blanchard’s performance is perfectly suited to the music’s amplified, electric atmosphere.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT July 16, 2021 Jamilah Jackson 313.399.6108 [email protected] Jeanine Tesori and Tazewell Thompson’s American opera Blue to receive a bold new production by Michigan Opera Theatre on September 11 and 12 Award-winning opera about the Black experience will be first opera ever staged at Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre DETROIT July 16, 2021 – Michigan Opera Theatre is set to stage its next production, an opera shedding light on the everyday experience of Black Americans. Winner of the 2020 Music Critics Association of America Award for Best Opera, BLUE is a new American opera which centers on a family and community as they experience both tragedy and healing. This production will be the first opera staged at the Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre, and boasts a fully female leadership team under director Kaneza Schaal and conductor Daniela Candillari. In addition to featuring many original cast members reprising their roles, many have a direct connection with Metro Detroit and affiliations with institutions such as Oakland University (Krysty Swann) and University of Michigan (Kenneth Kellogg, Olivia Johnson and Camron Gray). BLUE features a richly evocative libretto by playwright Tazewell Thompson (MOT’s A View from the Bridge) and masterful score by lauded theatrical composer Jeanine Tesori (Broadway’s Fun Home and Caroline, or Change). “You could say that BLUE is about a Black teenage boy who dies at the hands of a police officer – but that would be misleading, and would probably make you think the opera was exploitative of tragedy,” says MOT Artistic Director Yuval Sharon. “What BLUE is actually about is the story of a Black family, and the strong community that family has in the wake of a terrible tragedy.
