The lesson learned in Swampscott last month is any decision to downgrade public safety spending involves risk. Breen and his crews arrived on Bay View Drive and Linden Avenue ready and equipped to put out deadly fires and attempt to minimize property damage. Fires in smaller communities are relatively rare, although Swampscott has seen its share in the last two years. Even big cities have seen reductions in fires in recent years with public safety campaigns and safer construction con- tributing to the reduction. But any Massachusetts chief will readily point out the number of deadly fires ignited across the state in 2015 and 2016. Education efforts and even public appeals by chiefs urg- ing residents to reduce fire threats have not stemmed from deadly blazes. A firefighter’s typical day tends to revolve around responses ranging from medical emer- gencies to accidents. But departments ranging in size from Swampscott’s to Lynn’s must al- ways be ready to be a first and last line of de- fense against the death and destruction a fire can sow before it is checked. Fire departments can attack fires and lives and property if they are equipped with the resources they need to provide that de- fense. By Katie Morrison ITEM STAFF LYNN — Summer can be tough for parents and chil- dren alike. After being out of school for over a month, kids are looking for something to stay occupied, and par- ents are looking to get them out of the house and active. For local parents with children from under a year old to high school seniors, the Lynn Summer Youth track has been somewhat of a godsend. Every Monday night at Manning Field, dozens of kids turn out to participate in several track and eld events. The events are com- pletely free of charge, open to all ages and runs over the course of several weeks during the dog days of summer. Joe Abelon, the event’s organizer, says that the turn- out for the series has been much higher this summer in comparison to the rst two years of the program. A big reason for the larger crowds is Abelon’s grass roots marketing campaign. The organizer said he stood outside of elementary schools at the end of the day, and handed out yers to the parents stopping to pick up their children. “I just went up to them, handed it to them and ex- plained what it was,” said Abelon. “I think when you do that, rather than hand them to kids...half the time, the kids don’t even bring them home. So that turned out to be effective.” Abelon also went to a handful of Fourth of July celebra- tions in Lynn, one at Gowdy Park and another at Lynn Woods, guring that he’d run into local parents.
