    LH/1/0512 LINDY HOP – RULES 1. The competition should be arranged in a social context, the audience, participators and officials should have the possibility to dance and enjoy the spirit of Lindy Hop. There is no need for a huge arena like concepts and in coherence with Lindy Hop spirit the event can be arranged in Clubs, Theaters and smaller forms of arenas where the audiences can come close to the dancers and the joy and happiness that the dance spreads.     The Miseducation of Hip-Hop dance: Authenticity, and the commodification of cultural identities. E. Moncell Durden., Assistant Professor of Practice University of Southern California Glorya Kaufman School of Dance Introduction Hip-hop dance has become one of the most popular forms of dance expression in the world. The explosion of hip-hop movement and culture in the 1980s provided unprecedented opportunities to inner-city youth to gain a different access to the “American” dream; some companies saw the value in using this new art form to market their products for commercial and consumer growth. This explosion also aided in an early downfall of hip-hop’s first dance form, breaking. The form would rise again a decade later with a vengeance, bringing older breakers out of retirement and pushing new generations to develop the technical acuity to extraordinary levels of artistic corporeal genius. We will begin with hip-hop’s arduous beginnings. Born and raised on the sidewalks and playgrounds of New York’s asphalt jungle, this youthful energy that became known as hip-hop emerged from aspects of cultural expressions that survived political abandonment, economic struggles, environmental turmoil and gang activity. These living conditions can be attributed to high unemployment, exceptionally organized drug distribution, corrupt police departments, a failed fire department response system, and Robert Moses’ building of the Cross-Bronx Expressway, which caused middle and upper-class residents to migrate North. The South Bronx lost 600,000 jobs and displaced more than 5,000 families. Between 1973 and 1977, and more than 30,000 fires were set in the South Bronx, which gave rise to the phrase “The Bronx is Burning.” This marginalized the black and Latino communities and left the youth feeling unrepresented, and hip-hop gave restless inner-city kids a voice.

    Dance History Timeline By Erin Rivers Prehistoric Times Dance Style - Very easy to do and did not contain a lot of complex movements; arms were a huge factor and dances were used to represent many different everyday life aspects such as hunting, survival, marriage, death, ect. - “In harmony” and “out of harmony” dances were used to bring everyone together. New Forms/Elements & Description of Dance at this Time - Circle dance is the oldest formation in dance. Lines were very common as well. - Elements such as sticks, bones and handmade sounds were present during these times. - Dance was not always written down, but what was is still used in some elements of dance today.     Lindy Hop News Worldwide Volume 3 Issue 1 - January 1996 The Hoppin Birthday Party But once there, what a fabulous venue: wooden floor, high ceiling, gallery, life-size model of Elvis the Pelvis. Not to mention three of the best swing DJs around - Tim's Jumpin' Jive, Vernon'sSwingmatism and, of course, Ronnie Slide. What more could a girl want? Before long the night was jumping. The dance floor was a blur of frenzied arms and legs, as uninhibited couple after uninhibited couple swung out to the non-stop sounds. Highlight of the evening was an impromptu jam session by jazz dancer Alex George and the inimitable Cookie, aka Angela Andrews. I had no idea there could be so much 'Lindy' in 'Latin'! We were still rompin' at midnight. My poor feet didn't know what had hit them. The climax of the evening came with the raf­ fle, that I unfortunately did not win, and the ceremonial cutting of the Hoppin' birthday cake, baked by Cookie's mother. One consolation for all those of you that missed out on all this fun is that, as I write this, there are only 347 days until the next one! Wells Abstract: Central to dominant jazz history narratives is a midcentury rupture where jazz transitions Downloaded from http://direct.mit.edu/daed/article-pdf/148/2/36/1831405/daed_a_01741.pdf by guest on 27 September 2021 from popular dance music to art music. Fundamental to this trope is the idea that faster tempos and complex melodies made the music hostile to dancing bodies. However, this constructed moment of rupture masks a longer, messier process of negotiation among musicians, audiences, and institutions that restructured listening behavior within jazz spaces. Drawing from the field of dance studies, I of- fer the concept of “choreographies of listening” to interrogate jazz’s range of socially enforced move- ment “scores” for audience listening practices and their ideological significance. I illustrate this concept through two case studies: hybridized dance/concert performances in the late 1930s and “off-time” be- bop social dancing in the 1940s and 1950s. These case studies demonstrate that both seated and dancing listening were rhetorically significant modes of engagement with jazz music and each expressed agency within an emergent Afromodernist sensibility. Like many jazz scholars, I spend a lot of time do- ing critical historiography, contemplating the sed- imental layers of ideology jazz’s histories have ac- cumulated over time and how those striations af- fect our view of the past. But there is one moment in my life that sticks out when I truly felt the gravity of jazz historical narratives. When I say gravity, I mean precisely that: it pulled me off my feet and planted my ass in a chair.
