AVS WRAP UP SEASON-OPENING ROAD TRIP WITH COLUMBUS DAY MATINEE IN BEANTOWN The Colorado Avalanche wraps up their season-opening, three-game road trip this afternoon in Boston against the Bruins. Today marks the fourth time in the last eight full seasons that Colorado has participated in this Columbus Day afternoon contest. The Avs are 1-1-0 so far on this trip, winning 4-2 at Madison Square Garden on Thursday before falling 4-1 at New Jersey on Saturday. The last time the Avalanche opened a season with three straight on the road was back in 2000-01, when they began the year with a four-game road trip. In fact, this year marks just the third time in the last 12 years that Colorado has started the season away from home (also 2012-13 and 2014-15).

AVS & BRUINS Today is the first of two meetings for the Avalanche and Bruins, who will finish off the season series this Wednesday in Denver. Colorado has won nine straight here at TD Garden and is 10-0-1 (10 wins, one tie) in its last 11 visits to Beantown. The Avalanche's last defeat in Boston was March 30, 1998.

STRONG IN OPENERS After Thursday night's victory in Manhattan, the Avs improved to 21-10-7 all-time on Opening Night (.645), the second-best record in the NHL. Tampa Bay owns the best mark at 16-7-2 (.680).

Individually, Semyon Varlamov posted a 3-0 record in three starts with a 1.50 GAA and .948 save percentage, placing him among the top 10 goaltenders in both categories. Offensively, Nathan MacKinnon led the club with four goals and six points, with his four goals tying him for fourth in the league. SWEDEN BOUND The Avalanche’s 2017-18 schedule is highlighted by the 2017 SAP NHL Global Series, which features a pair of regular-season games against the Ottawa Senators in Stockholm, Sweden, on Friday, Nov. 10, and Saturday, Nov. 11. Colorado is making its second trip to Europe and its international regular-season debut. The Avs were part of the 2001 NHL Challenge Series™, and as defending Stanley Cup champions defeated Brynas IF of the Swedish Elite League by a score of 5-3 thanks to Alex Tanguay’s hat trick. Colorado has four Swedish players on its current roster, Gabriel Landeskog (Stockholm), Anton Lindholm (Skelleftea), Patrik Nemeth (Stockholm) and Carl Soderberg (Malmo).

SCHEDULE BREAKDOWN Colorado will play 26 games against its Central Division rivals (13 home/away) after playing 30 games within the division last year. The Avs will face Dallas and St. Louis five times each, while meeting Chicago, Minnesota, Nashville and Winnipeg four times apiece. The Central is the only NHL division to feature seven clubs instead of eight. The Avs will play 24 games against Pacific Division teams, meeting each of the eight opponents three times (12 home/away). Colorado will have 32 total games against teams from the Eastern Conference, facing all 16 clubs twice (once at home).

MORE SCHEDULE NOTES The Avalanche’s longest homestand this season is six games from Dec. 27 to Jan. 6, which is the club’s longest home stay since 2013- 14 (seven). The Avs’ longest road trip is six games from Jan. 22 to Feb. 3, but the team will return home in the middle of that journey for the All-Star break. The Avs will host a New Year’s Eve game for the fifth straight year, as they welcome the New York Islanders to Pepsi Center on Dec. 31. Colorado’s schedule features 19 "weekend" games at Pepsi Center, including six on Friday, eight on Saturday and five on Sunday. The Avalanche will play a total of 11 back-to-back contests.

HOW YOU 'DRAW' IT UP Colorado finished second in the league in faceoff percentage last season at 53.6%, trailing only Anaheim (54.7). That 53.6 percent success rate was the highest in Avalanche history, topping the 51.6% clip set by the 2011-12 squad. The Avs ranked first in offensive zone faceoff percentage (56.3%) and were among the top five in both the defensive zone (2nd-52.0%) and neutral zone (5th-52.6%). The Avalanche finished with a 60.0% clip at home, best in the NHL.

Matt Duchene led the NHL in faceoff percentage at 62.6%, shattering the single-season Avalanche record set by Andrei Nikolishin (58.1) in 2003-04. It was the fifth-highest percentage since the NHL began tracking faceoffs in 1998-99 (see below). Duchene, who became the first Avs player to lead the league in that category, won a league-best 66.5% of his draws at home and finished second on the road at 58.6%.
