The Emmet Mullins-trained gelding is a useful staying handicapper on the Flat having won the Cesarewitch in fine style at the Curragh and there was plenty to like about his hurdle debut at Punchestown. The son of Champs Elysees showed a slick jumping technique and, while the bare form of that 2m4f maiden is nothing to get excited about, he looks an exciting prospect. Willie Mullins has a really strong four-pronged challenge with riding arrangements suggesting Gaillard Du Mesnil is preferred. The form of his course maiden win at Christmas has worked out particularly well. Gentlemansgame won a Cork maiden in runaway fashion and has loads of potential, while Ashdale Bob and Fakiera are others to consider having filled the first two places in a 2m4f Navan Grade 2. The selection was a last minute scratching from the Champion Chase at Cheltenham last year due to a stone bruise and is a hot favourite to make amends next month having readily won both outings this season. Min won the previous two runnings of this race and, having gained a deserved Cheltenham Festival success in the Ryanair Chase last March, completed a hat-trick of wins in the 2m4f John Durkan Chase at Punchestown last time. He's a gelding of the highest quality but just appears to lack the gears of his stablemate. Notebook appears soundly held on running here at Christmas, while Fakir D'Oudairies drops down significantly in trip but hasn't shown much spark this term. ENERGUMENE is taken to make it three from three over fences this season. The point-to-point winner has really impressed this term easily winning over 2m4f at Gowran Park and again made all and jumped well when accounting for Captain Guinness over two miles at Naas last month. Unexcepted is a half-brother to the exciting front-running chaser Great Field and made an impressive start over fences at Tipperary back in October. Franco De Port is the only Grade 1 winner over fences in the line-up having finished strongly to beat Darver Star and Felix Desjy over course and distance at Christmas. Darver Star would prefer better ground, while Felix Desjy was a Grade 1 winner over hurdles at Aintree and is another that likes to force the pace. 2021 CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL PREVIEW A comprehensive preview with expert contributions from: • Steve Lewis Hamilton - Professional backer • Donn McClean - Racing writer and presenter Steve (SLH) assesses the home challenge whilst Donn (DMC) analyses the Irish contingent. Prices shown correct at the time of writing. • Richard Hoiles • John Hunt Top racing commentators provide their on-course insight. • Ten year trends The telling stats from Paul O’Hara • Exclusive horses to follow Direct from a variety of Lambourn trainers The going is expected to be Good to Soft with dry, mild weather over the four days. Tuesday 16th 1.20 Supreme Novices' Hurdle (Grade 1) 4yo+ 2m½f SLH: Metier, Soaring Eagle and at big odds Grumpy Charlie are the pick of the British trained horses. Metier was a decent performer on the flat in Ireland and has progressed from race to race over hurdles since moving to Harry Fry. He is a strong stayer who performs well on soft ground. It is taken as fact that the course will be prepared to ride no firmer than Good to Soft on the opening day. Soaring Glory showed marked improvement when impressively winning the Betfair Hurdle at Newbury. He appears to be less dependent on ground conditions than Metier and looks sure to figure. On soft ground Grumpy Charlie could run better than his odds suggest if allowed to take his chance. Despite not being totally straightforward, he is improving with racing experience. DMC: At the start of the season, it looked like Appreciate It was going to be Willie Mullins’ Ballymore Hurdle horse, and that Ferny Hollow was going to be his Supreme Novices’ Hurdle horse.

  • Cheltenham Festival Guide 2021 Daniel Watkins
Cheltenham Festival Guide 2021 Daniel Watkins www.lapoftheodds.com Cheltenham Festival Guide 2021 Introduction The annual quest for winners sees me routinely holed up in a back bedroom, hunched over a keyboard and monitor for interminable weeks on end, hardly seeing a soul and rarely out of my pyjamas. What was a nerdy niche is now pretty much the working mainstream. Welcome to my world, one and all… With such trying external circumstances, and so little to look forward to in the short term, it seems that the pull of the Cheltenham Festival has grown exponentially greater again this year. This humble guide started for a few friends in 2004 and is now in edition number 18. If you are looking for views and predictions, they are now myriad over social media. There are some very insightful nuggets amongst the deafening cacophony of “this can’t be beaten” over-confidence. It is great to see such interest stimulated, and whilst hearing many views has the dangers of being dragged towards consensus (and there’s rarely profit there), it also helps temper the unfounded runaway confidence that can come from being in too much of a bubble. Thanks as always to the long-suffering Tanya, whose annual support for my selfish Springtime obsession is only partly offset by the knowledge that she is my obsession throughout the year. No-one should have had to witness the petulant tantrums when the Novice handicap chase was dropped for the mares chase, and I can only plead forgiveness!! Please stay in touch by subscribing, following or liking my blog, Lap of The Odds (www.lapoftheodds.com), and watch for daily articles during festival week, where non-runners and weather may result in some changes to selections.

2020 HORSE RACING IRELAND AWARDS DECEMBER 15 2020 WELCOME It is a pleasure to welcome you all to the 2020 Horse Racing Ireland Awards which has a very different look to it this year. We come together to honour outstanding achievement in our industry and at the same time pay tribute to all who adapted so well to the tremendous challenges that the year presented. It came as a serious blow that the 2019/2020 National Hunt season was cut short, robbing us of terrific sporting occasions at Fairyhouse and Punchestown. We overcame a worrying delay to the racing schedule just as the 2020 Flat season was beginning and once racing resumed in early June, the resilience of this wonderful industry shone through. It is important to reflect on how everyone, particularly stable staff and those working at our 26 racecourses, adapted to the challenges that the rearranged and quite unrecognisable fixture list posed. I wish to acknowledge the tremendous dedication, effort and flexibility shown by so many. This commitment went a long way in keeping the show on the road. We also recognise and commend our owners for their continued patience. Our first priority remains the return of owners to the racecourse and we continue to work with the Association of Irish Racehorse Owners and their representative Caren Walsh on this. The indications are that 2021 will be a very different time for us all. However, the foundations of the racing and breeding industries in Ireland are strong and I am confident that both sectors will be to the fore as our economy recovers from the devastating effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
