SOUS CHEF DE CHEMIN DE FER COMPO ATTENDS PATRIOT AWARD DINNER SPONSORED BY CONGRESONAL MEDAL OF HONOR SOCIETY

On February 5, 2020, I was invited to attend the Patriot Award Dinner sponsored by the Congressional Medal of Honor Society. The event was held at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum. Master of Ceremonies were actor, Joe Mantegna and comedian, Tom Dreesen. The event was to recognize actor, musician and Veteran supporter Gary Sinise, and Dave McIntyre, President and CEO of Triwest Healthcare. The event was attended by 25 Medal of Honor recipients, active duty, veterans, VSO leaders and citizens. As my wife, Jodie and I checked in to the event, I noticed several looks that I received from the public due to my gold jacket and funny hat. Once the event opened and the social hour began, I noticed a group of ROTC cadets milling about. I approached them and asked them about their prospective service in the Army. One question asked of me was why I was dressed the way I was. I informed these cadets of the 40&8 and our beginnings. To be honest, they looked like deer in the headlights. They hadn’t even heard of the Legion. As I continued to walk around the venue, I had several other attendees ask me why my chapeau was different, what did the pins mean on my chapeau and my officer bars. I explained. My wife and I had the opportunity to have our photo taken with Gary Sinise. I gave him a Grand du California Challenge Coin. He was very much appreciative of that. I also gave Joe Mantegna a California Coin, I was surprised to receive one of his in return. My wife and I made it over to our table only to be seated next to a MOH recipient. I had the distinct privilege and honor to sit next to Colonel Barney Barnum, USMC retired. Barney earned the MOH on December 18, 1965 in the RVN. Ironically, this date was 2 days after I was born. I think Providence prevailed that night. After Barney retired from the Corps, he was appointed Assistant Secretary of the Navy by Bush #43. Barney knew all about the 40&8 and told me he was an invited guest to our national promenade in SC 10 or so years ago. He said he still gets out mailings. At the end of the night, we both exchanged challenge coins. So although I didn’t get any membership last night, I did serve as a public relations piece by discussing the 40&8. 2020 CAJUN WRECK & CARVILLE STAR
