An autonomous body, the Council was established in 1951 to stimulate public interest in, and promote the knowledge, appreciation and practice of the arts. In fulfilling its remit, the Council provides advice to government on artistic matters, advice, assistance and support to individuals, arts organisations and a wide range of governmental and non-governmental bodies; and financial assistance to individuals and organisations for artistic purposes. As an advocate for the arts, the Arts Council commissions and publishes research and information and undertakes a range of development projects, often jointly with other public sector or non- governmental agencies. The Council also part funds the programmes of arts officers in local authorities and Údaras na Gaeltachta. The Arts Council consists of 12 members and a chair appointed by the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism. The Council’s state grant in 2003 was €44m. The 52nd Annual Report and Financial Statements for the year ended 31 December 2003.
