New Center for Alzheimer’s/Dementia Care Plans Spring 2022 Opening in Loudon

More than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s and by 2050 that number is expected to rise to nearly 14 million. The need for a facility like the Our Place Adult Day Center is huge. “There is one in Knox County already but this one is primarily being built to serve residents from Loudon and Monroe counties,” said Cynthia Rogers as she spoke to our club Wednesday. She is a member of the Our Place Board of Directors.

“It’s estimated that 20% of Loudon and Monroe county seniors are affected by dementia today,” she added.

The mission of the center is to provide a program of activities for seniors with Alzheimer’s/Dementia that will enrich their lives and allow free time for their caregivers.

The facility will be located at the intersection of SR444 and SR72 in Loudon (end of Tellico Village Parkway) and is under construction now. They broke ground in of 2021 and hope to open sometime in the spring of 2022. The facility will be approximately 2,200 square feet with options to expand as the need grows.

2 Initially they will be able to serve between 15 and 20 clients who have mild to moderate Alzheimer’s. There will be two full-time staff people and several part time employees. The care there is not medical. They provide socialization and will have art, music, pet therapy, recreational games, and a stimulation exercise. Clients will sign up monthly for services. They are required to attend a minimum of two days a week. There is a cost to the program, she explained. They aren’t sure exactly how much it will be but it will be approximately $70-$80 per day. The center will be open for clients from Monday-Friday between 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

So far, they have raised approx. $750,000. The land was donated to them, and the rest of the money has come from donations, including our club. The money they are raising now is to furnish the building. They have the building covered, Rogers said.

Once they open, they will be needing volunteers. If you would like to volunteer or donate you can email CYNTHIA. You can visit their WEBSITE for more information.

The Visitors & Guests Report

It was a light day for guests, visitors and members. Only 29 Rotarians attended. We had two guests:

• Jerry Dietz’s guest was Jane Ondocin, Past President of the Clarksville Rotary Club. She recently moved here from Clarksville. • PM Dave Fielder was once again a guest of Dan Barnett.

Welcome to Jane and Dave!

She says she’s had more pain than usual of late. Bettye says she’s returning to Duke Medical Center on Wednesday, 4, and will be there through Saturday, . She says she’s hoping to be included in a clinical trial soon.

Jim McIntee had some fun this week in Columbus, OH. He was part of the Ohio State “Singing Buckeyes” men’s chorus that sang the National Anthem at the Columbus Clippers minor league baseball game then joined the family to watch the game. Jim sang from his wheelchair and the video clearly shows he was right-on with the words, the music and the director. He’s pictured here with son-in-law Mark Middleton, his wife, Jeanne, their daughter Jessica, Jim, and daughter June McIntee Ryan. How’s Mother Rotary doing? “She’s holding steady,” Jeanne says.

Please keep one and all in your thoughts and prayers!

5 News’n’Notes! Jim Dodd Returns To Train His Replacements; Gaddis To Co-Chair Youth Service Committee

Our former (and long-time) Sergeant at Arms Jim Dodd was back with us on Wednesday after a long absence. Jim returned to train our new Sergeants-at- Arms — Bill Rice, Scott Bertini and Howard Fass. But Howard was a no- show so Jim brought Bill and Scott (pictured here) up to speed on the finer points of the job. These three are going to “Rotary Rotate” months and here’s the rotation as of now: July—Scott Bertini; August—Howard Fass; —Bill Rice. Thanks for help Jim and it was great to see you!

Our Board of Directors, by a virtual vote, approved James Gaddis to be Co- Chair of the Youth Service Committee to work with Denise Defenderfer. “Though we will not be having the usual Rotary Youth Exchange student activity, I feel this committee has a vital role in working with our Interact clubs at Hardin Valley/Leah Berry and our new club at Christian Academy of Knoxville/Tom King along with seeking the opportunity to re-engage Farragut High School's club as we move through the year,” President David said.

The Shopper News published a great piece this week about the new business owned by our Leona Skiles — “Little Fixes.” Click on this LINK and give it a read!

6 Dist. 6780 Pack the Park for Polio Game Is Aug. 17 at Smokies Stadium

“PACK THE PARK TO ERADICATE POLIO” will be held on Tuesday, , at Smokies Stadium. This is a major District 6780 polio fundraising event. It is our chance to raise funds, see our Rotary friends again, and see new District Governor Cindy Gammons throw out the first pitch. The Smokies play the Birmingham Barons at 7 p.m.

Ticket vouchers are just $12 and include admission to the game and $6 in Stadium Credit that can be used for concessions or at any vendor in the stadium.

Best of all, $5.50 from each ticket sold goes to Rotary International's End Polio Now! campaign, and counts toward your club's Eradicator Club goal.

There will be a sign-up sheet passed around on Wednesday and Treasurer Steve Krempasky will bill you for your tickets.

If you can't attend on August 17, your ticket voucher is good for any regular season home game after August 17.
