Kanye West 'DONDA' Listening Event . Breaks Apple Streaming record. Kanye West packed the house for his 'DONDA' listening party -- but he packed in a whole lot more than just that . dude set a record on Apple that no artist has ever come near. Sources with direct knowledge tell TMZ . Ye's album event this past week at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta broke the Apple Music Global Livestream record . with 3.3 million viewers who tuned in on their screens. That's a heck of a lot more than the previous record, we're told, which was set by Gucci Mane and Jeezy in their highly-anticipated Verzuz battle earlier last year -- at a reported 1.8 million viewers. Kanye practically doubled the number as a solo act! BTW, the 'DONDA' moment was a one-time deal -- meaning it aired live for people to stream, but hasn't gone back up on Apple for folks to watch again. So, that figure -- 3.3M unique sets of eyeballs -- is a one and done. It'd be a little harder to calculate if the thing was in circulation. Our sources tell us once Kanye releases Donda -- it's projected to drop August 6 -- the Atlanta performance will be posted to Apple for fans to watch again. Like we first told you . even though the event is over, the party's still going for Kanye himself . who's moved into MB Stadium (temporarily) to finish the album. Apparently, he was so inspired by the energy around him Thursday -- he just nestled in and got back to work. With all the hype -- and hard data to back it now -- ya gotta figure the numbers for this album will follow suit . and perhaps reach new heights that even Ye hasn't seen. Kanye West Bringing 'Donda' Party Back To Atlanta, But Needs New Twist. Kanye West Bringing ‘Donda’ Party Back to ATL … But It Needs New Twist. 4:29 PM PT -- Kanye's team just sent out an official release for the event, it'll happen Aug. 5 at 9 PM with creative direction from Demna Gvasalia . Tickets will run from $30-$75. Gvasalia's name might ring a bell, he's currently the creative director of Balenciaga and the founder of Vetements. Kanye West is hosting another album release for his upcoming "Donda" album at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta . but he's still brainstorming on how to make the event unique to fill new seats. Sources with direct knowledge tell TMZ … Yeezy and his production team locked down Aug. 5 at MBS for another "Donda" album release on the eve of the album drop. We're told stadium employees have been hired on . and plan to work it the same as last week. However, we're told Kanye and co. are working to figure out how to make this experience different from the first, which as we first reported, broke the Apple Music Global Livestream record with 3.3 million viewers . Our sources say CAA and Live Nation are putting pressure on Ye and his production company to make the second "Donda" event different . because some fear it won't be easy to sell tickets in the same market if this show's a carbon copy of the first. We're told it's unclear what Kanye plans to do the second time around -- he could go with a new stage or new musical arrangement -- and Yeezy is known to change his mind at the last minute . so right now, anything is possible. There's a lot of directions Kanye could go . while many felt his first "Donda" event was innovative, some say it was essentially just Ye standing around and playing the album for his estranged wife, Kim Kardashian . As you know . Kanye's been living in the stadium as he finishes up the album , so ya gotta think he knows the place inside and out, and that could come into play as he tries to switch things up for this event. Kanye West postpones album ‘DONDA’ once again. Kanye West ’s fans are hoping third time’s the charm. The notorious rapper postponed the release of his 10th studio album DONDA — named after his late mother — for the second time on Friday, over a year after he first tweeted it would be out in late July 2020. Now, fans have a third release date to look forward to: August 6, according to Justin Laboy , internet celebrity and host of the podcast Respectfully Justin . KANYE WEST WILL MOVE THE RELEASE DATE OF DONDA TO AUGUST 6TH. THANKS FOR YOUR PATIENCE ❤ HE WANTS TO GIVE HIS FANS THE BEST POSSIBLE PRODUCT WITHOUT RUSHING ANYTHING. HE LOVES YALL WITH ALL OF HIS HEART. GOD BLESS #DONDA #RESPECTFULLY — Respectfully Justin (@JustinLaboy) July 24, 2021. “KANYE WEST WILL MOVE THE RELEASE DATE OF DONDA TO AUGUST 6TH. THANKS FOR YOUR PATIENCE…HE WANTS TO GIVE HIS FANS THE BEST POSSIBLE PRODUCT WITHOUT RUSHING ANYTHING. HE LOVES YALL WITH ALL OF HIS HEART. GOD BLESS,” Laboy tweeted. This isn’t the first time West has made his supporters wait for an album. The popular Twitter account @HipHopNumbers, which compiles facts and figures about hip-hop music, said that West’s 10 studio albums have been almost five years late combined. “Kanye West Albums have been 1,808 days late in total (4.95 years),” the account tweeted. West gave fans a preview of the project on Thursday, playing the album for a completely full crowd at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The event was live streamed on Apple Music. Among the over 10,000 people in attendance were stars such as rapper Rick Ross , Khloe Kardashian and Kim Kardashian West , who came to support despite filing for divorce with West in February. The event was not exactly a concert, as West remained mostly silent allowing fans to hang onto every word of each new song as they blared through the speakers. Instead of a traditional performance, the 44-year-old rapper listened along with everyone else as he meandered about a white stadium flooring the size of a football field, wearing a bright red outfit with orange sneakers. Despite no official tracklist, fans instantly recognized some of the featured artists on the album by their voices alone — causing speculation that rappers including Pusha T , Travis Scott , Playboi Carti , Lil Baby , Roddy Ricch , Lil Durk , Pop Smoke , Baby Keem , Don Toliver , Vory and even Jay-Z have guest verses on the project. The potential reunion between West and the Brooklyn-born rapper, also known as HOV , caused headlines as the pair, who frequently collaborated in the past, have not been on great terms lately, last appearing together in 2016 on Drake ’s hit song “Pop Style.” A big reason for their falling out was West’s public support of Donald Trump since 2016 which Jay-Z criticized in a 2018 guest verse on Meek Mill ’s song “What’s Free.” “No red hat, don’t Michael and Prince me and Ye / They separate you when you got Michael and Prince’s DNA / I ain’t one of these house n***as you bought / My house like a resort, my house bigger than yours / My spot—c’mon, man—my route better of course…” he rapped. Now, the two may be on better terms as Jay-Z was heard saying on his DONDA feature, “I told him stop all of that red cap, we goin’ home” and referenced their 2011 Grammy-nominated collaborative album Watch The Throne , saying “This might be the return of the throne.” Despite continued excitement surrounding the album’s release, fans are of course still bombarded the rapper with messages of frustration via social media. “Kanye still trolling y’all,” tweeted Jamil “Mal” Clay , former co-host of the Joe Budden Podcast . User @giozxx tweeted a photo of a clown sitting in front of a computer alongside the caption “how i looked thinking i was going to wake up to kanye’s new album, stayed up till 12 yesterday and nothing dropped #DONDA.” “kanye was the mf who lived right next to his school but was always late #DONDA,” tweeted @SamKingg_.

THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY SCHREYER HONORS COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATION ARTS & SCIENCES “I THOUGHT ABOUT KILLING YOU”: CONSIDERING THE UTILITY OF RHETORICAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL CRITICAL APPROACHES TO KANYE WEST’S YE CORY N. STEINLE SPRING 2020 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for baccalaureate degrees in Communication Arts and Sciences and Labor and Employment Relations with honors in Communication Arts and Sciences Reviewed and approved* by the following: Bradford Vivian Professor of Communication Arts & Sciences Thesis Supervisor Lori Bedell Associate Teaching Professor in Communication Arts & Sciences Honors Adviser * Signatures are on file in the Schreyer Honors College. i ABSTRACT This paper examines the merits of intrinsic and extrinsic critical approaches to hip-hop artifacts. To do so, I provide both a neo-Aristotelian and biographical criticism of three songs from ye (2018) by Kanye West. Chapters 1 & 2 consider Roland Barthes’ The Death of the Author and other landmark papers in rhetorical and literary theory to develop an intrinsic and extrinsic approach to criticizing ye (2018), evident in Tables 1 & 2. Chapter 3 provides the biographical antecedents of West’s life prior to the release of ye (2018). Chapters 4, 5, & 6 supply intrinsic (neo-Aristotelian) and extrinsic (biographical) critiques of the selected artifacts. Each of these chapters aims to address the concerns of one of three guiding questions: which critical approaches prove most useful to the hip-hop consumer listening to this song? How can and should the listener construct meaning? Are there any improper ways to critique and interpret this song? Chapter 7 discusses the variance in each mode of critical analysis from Chapters 4, 5, & 6.

  • A Qualitative Content Analysis of Kanye West's Twitter Practice
The Life Of Kanye A Qualitative Content Analysis of Kanye West’s Twitter Practice. 15.08.2016 Lund University M.Sc. in Media and Communications Studies Gloe Lucas 920721-T197 !1 ABSTRACT Celebrity Twitter use has recently been the subject of celebrity studies. Performing authenticity and intimacy as well as engaging interactively with followers are considered central characteristics of ‘micro-celebrity’ practice, which is widely considered to be extensively utilized by celebrities in their use of Twitter. Taking this framework suggested by celebrity studies as a point of departure, this thesis focuses on the case study of Kanye West, whose recent use of Twitter has been given much attention by celebrity news media due to his controversial tweets. In carrying out a content analysis of this case study’s tweets, this thesis aims to understand the way Kanye West is using Twitter, what strategies he is employing and how this links to the structural implications of celebrity. As the findings suggest, Kanye West employs two main strategies in his usage of Twitter: In his first strategy he uses Twitter as a tool to promote his celebrity commodity, increase his celebrity capital and create an elite network of fellow celebrities. The second strategy aims at creating an authentic and personal narrative that redefines and extends Kanye West’s celebrity persona. Within this second strategy, “stream-of-consciousness” writing was identified as a unique strategy employed by Kanye West in his Twitter practice. Keywords: Celebrity, Twitter, Micro-Celebrity, Authenticity, Intimacy, Performance. Saturday is her favorite day of the week. That’s the day they go to the green market. So begins Padma Lakshmi’s charming entry into the world of children’s book, “Tomatoes For Neela,” which mixes the author’s memories of family cooking with practical food advice, a nod to farmworkers and even a pair of recipes. “It is just a very small personal story that centers around a young single mother who also is a recipe writer like me,” says Lakshmi, the host of Bravo’s “Top Chef” and “Taste the Nation” on Hulu. “It’s just really about teaching children how to cook from an early age, respecting Mother Nature and eating when things are in season.” Neela and her mom make a sauce using tomatoes bought from the green market and create enough to jar some for winter, saving it to share with grandmother when she next visits from India. In the Lakshmi meantime, the grandmother gazes down from framed photos, present in spirt. Neela carefully writes down all the recipes. H-Announce “I Gotta Testify”: Conversations on Kanye West, Religion & Hip-Hop Announcement published by VaNatta Ford on Monday, September 21, 2015 Type: Call for Papers Date: October 19, 2015 Location: United States Subject Fields: African American History / Studies, Black History / Studies, Communication, Popular Culture Studies, Religious Studies and Theology CALL FOR CHAPTER PROPOSALS “I Gotta Testify”: Conversations on Kanye West, Religion & Hip-Hop Editors: Joshua K. Wright, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of History, University of Maryland Eastern Shore VaNatta Ford, Ph.D., Visiting Assistant Professor of Africana Studies, Williams College Adria Goldman, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Communication, Gordon State College Is Kanye West taking his listeners to heaven or hell? Is he a modern day bluesman promoting the devil’s music or a secular alternative to traditional as well as contemporary religious music? These are important questions to consider when evaluating the spiritual characteristics of hip-hop’s most polarizing artist. Since his 2004 debut album The College Dropout, Kanye West has been engaging his audience in ongoing conversations about God, religion, spirituality, and theodicy. Kanye’s fascination with these topics has been evident since his first hit song “Through the Wire,” which credits God for his survival from a nearly fatal car accident. An alternate music video for his Grammy Award winning song “Jesus Walks,” visualizes man’s personal relationship with Christ by featuring Kanye walking through the hood with his homeboy Jesus. Kanye provides listeners with a revival-like experience through his “GOOD Music” as he testifies on his sophomore album, Late Registration, about God’s mercy, his grandmother’s illness, inequality, temptation, gold diggers, the evils of the world, and “looking extra fly.” His third album, Graduation, with its heavy emphasis on Nommo (a West African term for the generative power of words) and self- Citation: VaNatta Ford.

  • Steve Mcqueen Interviews Kanye West”, Interview Magazine, January 22, 2014
Steve McQueen, “Steve McQueen Interviews Kanye West”, Interview Magazine, January 22, 2014 What's there left to say about Kanye West? Certainly, West himself would have plenty to say. After all, he's the guy who, during an NBC telethon to benefit the victims of Hurricane Katrina, proclaimed, off script, that "George Bush doesn't care about black people." He's the guy who stormed the stage at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards and announced that his good friend Jay-Z's significant other, Beyoncé, should have won the prize just bestowed upon the perpetually in faux-awe Taylor Swift. He's the guy who, in front of the large fabricated-mountain set on his recent "Yeezus" tour, has alternately taken aim at Hedi Slimane, Bernard Arnault, François-Henri Pinault, and Nike; likened himself to Steve Jobs, Walt Disney, and Michelangelo; embarked on a long and winding monologue about Lenny Kravitz (at which Kravitz was present); and asked Google head Eric Schmidt to invest in his design firm Donda (named after West's late mother)—all while still retaining the level-eyed insight to hold Le Corbusier and Q-Tip as inhabitors of similarly lofty creative planes. A lot of it, of course, is just old-fashioned "I'm the Alpha with no Omega" hip-hop theater. But some of it seems to emanate from some deeper, less performative place for West. Lest we forget that before he was a pop-star polymath, he was an in-demand producer whose aspirations to become a rapper in his own right were thoroughly and consistently dismissed by the very people who were profiting from his skills as a songwriter and beat- maker.
