1 Traditional Arts Weekend

Performances by: Back Bayou Back Bayou Back Bayou brings the traditional Cajun music of southern Louisiana to mid-Michigan . The has been playing this lively dance music together for twelve years . The band’s accordion, twin fiddles, guitar, bass, percussion, and fine vocals get folks out on the dance floor well into the night . Back Bayou has performed for festivals, dances, parties, and special events around the state . The band is often seen playing for the traditional dance series of the Wheatland Music Organization . Members Jack Freeman (fiddle, vocals and dance instruction), Linda Freeman (triangle, rubboard and dance instruction), Roger Little (accordion, keyboard), Neil Mower (bass, accordion, guitar, vocals), Robin Mower (guitar, fiddle, vocals), Gerard Wauldron (drums) and Steve Callison (lead guitar, bass, vocals) have spent Fiddle River Stringband considerable time in Louisiana and at the Ashokan and Augusta Cajun/ Creole heritage programs where they studied with well-known Cajun musicians . The best applause you can give to a Cajun band is to dance . Each Back Bayou performance begins with waltz and Cajun two-step dance instruction . However, Cajun music is great for jitterbug and swing dancing too .

Fiddle River Stringband The Fiddle River Stringband was formed through a collaboration of Mad River Theater Works with Fiddle ‘n’ Feet . The group includes Jamie Gans on fiddle, Tamara Loewenthal on feet and fiddle, Bob Lucas on banjo, guitar, and lead vocals, and Chris Westhoff on guitar and bass . In addition to driving old-time stringband music and some great harmony singing, their show integrates clogging and other percussive dancing into a high energy cocktail of sound and music . Shoe Fly “We are committed to presenting the very best in traditional music and percussive dance from North America,” explains Tamara, in describing the group . “We’re versatile, musically speaking: Our music and are an eclectic mix of traditional and original material – Bob writes and sings the greatest songs - and the percussive dance is similarly far-reaching . We also teach percussive and traditional styles of dance, including calling and playing for square and contra dances . The social dance context for our music is the bridge from stage to dance hall, making it truly accessible .” In addition to presenting dance and instrument workshops they will be presenting “The Living Newspaper” on Friday evening, 8 PM, at the Main Stage .

3 editor’s corner kshops 2012 l Arts Wor While recently visiting my daughter in Detroit, we pulled up to itiona the parking meter, I got the quarters out of my pocket . She told me Trad to put them away, pulled out her phone, entered the meter number and time in, it pays the meter through her Paypal account . Really… . My Granddaughter asked what the big black cd’s were in my living room (she meant the albums!) . Then my grandson started telling me about how his sister was downloading a video on her Ipod and asked her if she would send it to him when he gets big enough to have his own Ipod . He is only four . Oh my… Change… am. I showing my Dance Instruction by: age by my lack of desire and participation in today’s connected world? ShoeFly Sheila Graziano I say that because I have been reflecting on the recent changes Tamara Loewenthal Connie Jo Ferguson at the Wheatland Music Organization . I realized how much had (Fiddle River Stringband) Brian Gorchowski changed since I started on the board twelve years ago . When I was Meadow Hunt Catherine Tobin (Yoga)

elected, the general rule of board succession was; board members Instrument/Voice Instruction by: headed up a committee along with their board duties and we had to stay until we found our replacement The Rhythm Billies Blue Water Ramblers Kathy Dean Back Bayou We were a small board back then . We are no longer so Glynn & Susie Russell Kathy Hagen informal or small! Many years ago, the board decided it had to have Dan Brandon Letha & Rex Raymond a succession plan and needed to recruit talented younger board David Klein Jo McLachlan Jamie Gans Carolyn Koebel members to continue its growth . During the past few years we have (Fiddle River Stringband) Nathan Myers been successful in adding many young talented people who have the Bob Lucas Hedda Nicol & Mike Doyle knowledge, heart, love of the mission and youthful energy to carry on (Fiddle River Stringband) Ann & Eldon Whitford the tradition and who are willing to help the organization grow and Chris Westhoff Rick Novak (Fiddle River Stringband) John Wartsler change with the competitive times . We will introduce you to the new Susan Nicholson (Frogwater) Lil’ Rev (Frogwater) faces of the board in the festival program book . John Nicholson (Frogwater) Bob Bovee & Gail Heil There has been another big change; WMO has a new employee Tom Eno Dave Leonard starting in April to assist Lola in the office . Since around July, Lola has operated the office almost single-handedly . The new assistant will Art, Misc & Childrens’ Workshops: be responsible for keeping the website and the Facebook page up to Carole Howard Linda McLachlan date along with many other responsibilities . We welcome her to the Kay & John Kelly Rachel Eid-Reis Wheatland family! Theresa Roberts Georgette Ames Wheatscouts has new leadership and what a fine job they have Dan Hummel Steve Shelander Judy Fogle Gail Jacobson done this past year . Stan Pope Emily Johnston This newsletter is packed full of TAW information . This Jan Wilson Mary Ann Wernette wonderful family week end is packed full of activities with Magdalen Fossum La-La Land Face Painting Holly Underwood Matt Joppich something for all ages and interests . There are all levels of dance, art Budd Greenman Joan Heuvelhorst workshops and instrument instruction scheduled . It is a nice time Brenda Bonter Jay Fields to get outdoors, listen to and play music, move the feet around an Barry Poupard Deborah Gregory un-crowed dance floor and learn something new or enjoy the familiar and visit with Wheatland family and friends . It’s a great way to start a new summer season . Evening Dance Bands: I recently bought a piece of artwork that talked about the ride Salsa Verde Jive At Five of life . A part of it says; Sometimes on the roller coaster of life we hang on to the bar for dear life and other times we put our hands up and just let go . And at the end of life the most we can hope for is that our hair is messed up, we’re out of breath and we didn’t throw up . But you know what? I don’t even care if I throw-up I’m finally enjoying the ride! I hope you are too! Kim Croy
