The world cheers as Harry tells Meghan, ‘I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you’ Love Love Love All You Need Is Love, Love is all you need

Jesus said it first, and summed it up in the Golden Rule. The Beatles sang it, and Bishop Michael Curry reiterated it in his address at the wedding of Harry and Megan

Regardless of whether or not you are a fan of Royalty, I think we would all want to wish Harry and Megan well. What better way than to use the words from Numbers 6:25-26 that was sung so beautifully at the ceremony.

1 John 4:7 Loving One Another

7 Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God. 8 But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love.

Needs we all have by Rodney Nicholson

I like the story of Huckleberry Finn who, for punishment, was given the fence to white- wash. He pre- tended to his friends that it was a great honour to do this job but then offered to let them do it in return for their giving him some small treas- ures. The work got done, Huckleberry got paid and, in the words of the author, Mark Twain, the boy learnt a valuable lesson about human na- ture. The secret is to convince people that they are privileged. Similarly, some folk will do anything for a bargain – look at the Boxing Day shop- pers staggering out of an Oxford Street store with goods they may not need. They were seduced, perhaps, by its being reduced to less than half price. Some things we want but others things we need. For example, we need to feel that we matter and have value. We need to belong and to be loved. We need to achieve something and so have a sense of pride. I suspect that many of the young people who end up in trouble with the police do not really believe in their own self-worth. I have known an el- derly husband, or wife, do practically all the talking on behalf of their partner, but in so doing they put their wife or husband down. That per- son needs to walk tall in their own right and not be sidelined by their “other half”. However camouflaged it may be at times, we all have a need for God. St Augustine put it like this: “You have made us for yourself and our hearts are restless till they find their rest in you.” Everyone in the vil- lage may not come to church but everyone has a spiritual need which, we believe, only God can fill. He invites us freely to accept the privilege of eternal life through trusting in Jesus Christ. In so doing we find inner peace, joy and fulfilment. The Bible says And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19 5

News from Londesborough Rodney Nicholson Coffee mornings June 7th: Church View with Terry and Dianne Core July 5th: 3 Stable Court with Anne and Tony Wells The coffee morning takes a break in August, returning on September 6th. Wednesday opening The church is open on Wednesdays with Georgina Scaum kindly arranging re- freshments in the morning. Church sitters are, however, still needed so please say if you can help. Mid-summer barbecue Following last year’s success, there will be an- other mid-summer barbecue in the grounds of the Old Hall on Thursday June 21st from 6pm. Delicious barbecue food plus drinks will be available, together with the opportunity to en- joy the atmospheric surroundings. Buddy Holly evening On Friday October 12th at 7.30pm we are hold- ing a Buddy Holly evening in church, for which tickets are £12.50, including quality refresh- ments. This promises to be a first class event. Bank Holiday teas Our gallant team served refreshments on Easter Monday when the weather was dreadful. Even so we raised £174 for church funds over the weekend. The May bank holiday was, by contrast, glorious and we took a net profit of £700, including donations in church and book sales. There will again be teas on Sunday and Monday, 27 and 28 May. Joan and Penelope attended the Visitation Joan Fletcher, churchwarden, and Penelope, PCC secretary and patron, attended the Archdeacon’s Visitation on 3rd May at Barmby Moor on behalf of All Saints, Londesborough. Joan along with other churchwardens, was admitted to office and anointed with oil at what was a joyful service. Archdeacon Sarah had asked the churchwardens of two churches to say a little in the service about their parishes, so Ruth Braithwaite and Sue Dale from Huggate, in our benefice spoke, as did the churchwarden of Barmby Moor. Tea and cakes were served afterwards, rounding off an enjoyable evening.

Richard was a much-loved village character

Richard Holmes (72), who died suddenly on 3rd May after suffering pneumonia and heart failure, was a popular member of the Londesborough community. Born to Tom and Clara Holmes, he and his elder sister Margaret, who survives him, spent their early life in Burnby. On leaving Woldgate school, Richard worked for a short time for Masseys before being employed by H.O. Andrews who were constructing the new A1079 through Hayton. He met Dianne and the couple were married by the Revd James Sellars in Londesborough church in 1970, living first, for a short time, in Burnby, then moving to Low Street. Following the closure of the village school in about 1980, Richard and Dianne became the first tenants of the re-ordered building, re-named “The Old School”, in 1983. Diane remembers there being only one teacher at the short time when she attended Londesborough school, but there was a staff of two when the school closed. There were two classrooms, a kitchen, a store room and boys’ and girls’ toilets. When he was 25/26, Richard passed his HGV test and drove lorries for J.D. Moore of , then later for Inturf of . This took him on enjoyable journeys to Scotland to lay turf for a golf course, and he also took turf to Wembley Stadium and the Millennium Stadium. Richard will be remembered as a great talker who liked to “wind people up”. Many have commented, “He made me smile”. He enjoyed his computer and was skilled with his hands, making garden chairs and bird boxes. He liked too to feed the birds. A kind man, he was very much a village character who will be greatly missed. The Revd David Senior is due to conduct Richard’s funeral service at Octon on May 21st. Our thoughts are with Dianne at this time. ****************************************************************************

Welcome to Warter News from Warter C of E Primary School

In March the school welcomed Geraldine Cooper, a SIAMS inspector for the day. This is a Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools (SIAMS) and takes place every five years . Warter had been expecting the call and prepared for the visit although we are always nervous to ensure everyone enjoys the caring ethos and the delightful children we are fortunate to teach each day at Warter. The inspec- tion went exceedingly smoothly and all members of our school community including children, parents, staff and governors ensured Mrs Cooper left at the end of the day with a greater understanding of the distinc- tive Christian nature of our school. Following the inspec- tion we patiently waited for the report which was wonder- ful to read the following week with the school judged to be outstanding in all areas inspected. Many thanks must be given to the children, parents , staff, governors and local community in enabling this judgement. If you would like to read the full report, please go to Warter C.E Primary School’s website (www.warterschool.eriding.net) and the link is on the front page. Many thanks.

News from Nunburnholme Update on the development of our Commu- nity Room next to the Church A Constitution meeting was kindly hosted by Judy, at Garth Cottage, one Saturday morning in April. The meeting was attended by four members of our CROC and led by Ann Handley, on behalf of and Wolds Rural Community Council; HWRCC has supported CROC in writing a Business Plan and forming a Constitution for the proposed Community Room.

Churchyard Tidy

Fortunately the inclement weather eased enough for a small group of vol- unteers to make an impressive difference to areas of the Churchyard by painting the gate, clearing the guttering, removing weeds from the gravel areas around the church and on some of graves, and pulling off the ivy on the Yew trees and grave stones in the wild area. The Jubilee Com- mittee is appreciative of the high standard the grass cutting and general maintenance which is regularly carried out by Lawrie.

Visitors to our bell ringing practice in Church On Tuesday 1st May ten Bever- ley and District Ringing Society members joined our practice ses- sion, they came from Middleton, and . In all there were seventeen Ringers to practise Plain Hunt! It was a very successful event with novice Ringers having an opportunity to practise with an experienced band. If anyone interested in joining our band please come along on any Tuesday from 7.30pm - 9pm to meet us and see what it's all about! 12

Royal Wedding Party Our village celebrated the royal marriage in style on Sunday 20th May: the weather was perfect, the folk music from Shiftipig was excellent, the variety and amount of food contributions were amazing, the Tombola, Raffle and Refreshments were enjoyed by many, the adults also seemed to be happy supporting the Beer & Gin bar and, the bouncy castle was very popular with our younger members of the village! All in all our Royal Wedding Party was a tremendous success, thank you to all who helped in any way. The Jubilee Committee raised £408 for their funds which will be used to maintain the churchyard.

13 News from Shiptonthorpe Shiptonthorpe Church: The Guardians of our Heritage Part 9

On the move! At All Saints we’ve been very busy recently, especially celebrating 3 of the Church’s main festivals – Easter, Ascension, and Pentecost - but also preparing to move out to allow the long-awaited restoration work to start. Yes, for the next few months the church building will be a no-go area. However, the Church ((ie the people and worship), is simply moving down the road – to the Village Hall, in fact. We’ll generally still be holding our Sunday services at 10.45 with the pattern of Holy Communion, All-Age Worship, Morning Prayer, Family Communion through the 4 Sundays of each month unchanged. There are, however, 2 Sundays in June when the needs of the Village Hall move our service to 5.30pm: the Holy Communion service on 3 June and an informal café-style service on 17th. It’s all a bit of an adventure and like all adventures there’ll be some challenges but also plenty of opportunities. Whatever we do, it will still be with the same aims as al- ways: to worship God in the company of our fel- low villagers (and friends from elsewhere), to encourage more people to share in the joy of worship, to grow in our faith, to let that faith influ- ence the way we live our lives. The church building is closed, but the Church is very definitely open for business! Why not come and see for yourself. You ‘ll get a warm and friendly welcome. Shelagh Jones

Just to say a big “THANK YOU” for all your warmest wishes that came my way whilst I was poorly. It is the kindness and sincerity of the people of Shiptonthorpe that make it a village I am proud to live in, and call mine. So thank you again for all your cards, flowers and concerns. I am very touched. Diana Vinnell (Horseshoe Cottage).

Another GREAT BIG THANK YOU to our villagers for the response to our Gift Day for the church. £1925.00 was donated. When Gift Aid is added the total raised will be approximately £2378.75. This will go a huge way towards covering the shortfall mentioned in the middle of page 15. Thank you

Shiptonthorpe Church: The Guardians of Our Heritage – Part 9 (

Many thanks to all those who have donated money at our April Gift Day – we would welcome any further donations even at this late stage. As you will know from the flier that was sent out in March, this money goes directly into our Church Fabric Fund to help towards maintenance. And, thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), the Historic Churches Trust, the Church of ChurchCare fund, and of course all our local community, our major maintenance project is coming to fruition. The HLF provided its “Permission to Start” in April 2018, and we have now con- tracted with building company Stone Edge (which has offices in Pocklington) to act as our main contractor. The identification of the various types of stone used in the church was undertaken in April, to ensure a good match for the substantial amount of stone repairs. We expect scaffolding to be erected by the time this ar- ticle goes to press, with work starting on removing the roof tiles during June. We hope to have the work fully completed by October 2018. SHIPTONTHORPE CHURCH WILL BE TEMPORARILY CLOSED FROM 28 MAY TO 30 SEPTEMBER We are still around £3,000 below our budgeted money required for the completion of the work, and we hope to close the gap over the next few months. One aspect which Historic England omitted from their report to the HLF on our church concerned the 12th cen- tury carving of the bishop-figure above the entrance to the church porch. As you will see from the picture, the carving is deteriorating markedly and we are seeking a specialist conservation report on how best to stop fur- ther deterioration. With the church building closed during the building work, Sunday services will be held in the Shiptonthorpe Village Hall – see our noticeboards for details. The Guardians of Our Heritage – Part 10 – next issue of The Link

Shiptonthorpe Churchwardens Re-Appointed At the April “Annual Church Meeting”, Freda Bailey and Steve Jones were re-elected to serve as Churchwardens for the next 12 months. They both attended one of the special “Admission of Churchwardens” Services where the Archdeacon of (Ven Sarah Bullock – pictured) admitted a number of Churchwardens from the archdea- conry. The service was held at Osbaldwick Church on 15 May 2018, and Archdeacon Sarah was on good form, with plenty of usefuladvice and a humorous address to inspire Churchwardens to work arduously in their local communities.

Did you know

The "Golden Rule" is a teaching shared by all the major religions of the world?

In the musical Fiddler on the Roof, Tevye, a man devoted to tradition, finds his thinking challenged when his oldest daughter wants to marry for love, instead of having her marriage arranged by her parents…….. It had never occurred to him that one could marry for love, and so one night he cannot help but ask his own wife (in song of course), “Do you love me?” The discourse goes like this: Tevye asks, “Golde, do you love me? Golde replies, “Do I what?” Tevye asks again, “Do you love me?” Golde declares, “You’re a fool!”, but Tevye persists, “I know but, Do you love me?” Exasperated by now Golde sings: Do I love him? For 25 years I’ve cooked for him, cleaned for him, starved with him. Twenty five years my bed is his. If that’s not love—what is?

God showed how much he loved us by sending his one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him. 10 This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins. Dear friends, since God loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other. No one has ever seen God. But if we love each other, God lives in us, and his love is brought to full expression in us. ****************************** It must be love, not a mobile phone was in sight. I haven't checked—but I’m sure that Harry and Megan will have updated their status by now
