• Freedom fighter and Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra musician Anup Bhattacharya (77 years) passed away in Dhaka • He worked as the composer and music director at Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra during Bangladesh’s liberation war • Some of his patriotic songs like Teer Hara Ei Dheu-er Sagor, Rokto Diye Naam Likhhechhi, Purbo Digonte and Nongor Tolo Tolo inspired the liberation war fighters during 1971. • Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra was the medium for radio broadcasting in 1971.

Arzan Nagwaswalla becomes 1st Parsi to represent the Indian cricket team

• First Revenue Minister of Kerala and JSS leader KR Gouri Amma (102 years) passed away at a hospital in Thiruvananthapuram due to age-related ailments. • She served as the Revenue Minister in the first EMS Namboodiripad government and introduced the revolutionary Land Reforms Bill in 1957. • She was a minister in communist-led ministries in Kerala in 1957, 1967, 1980 and 1987. • She became Agriculture Minister in Congress-led government from 2001 to 2006.

RBI cancels licence of West Bengal's United Co-operative Bank

• The RBI has cancelled the licence of the United Co-operative Bank Ltd, Bagnan in West Bengal as the bank does not have adequate capital and earning prospects. • The bank has failed to comply with the requirements of section 22 (3) (a), 22 (3) (b), 22 (3) (c), 22 (3) (d) and 22 (3) (e) read with section 56 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949. • The Registrar of the bank has been requested to issue an order for winding up the bank and appoint a liquidator for the bank.

Google Pay users in US can transfer money to app users in India, Singapore

• Alphabet Inc's Google has launched international money transfer partnerships with remittances firms Wise and Western Union Co for users of its U.S. payments app, the companies. • Now, Google Pay users in the United States can transfer money to app customers in India and Singapore, with plans to expand to the 80 countries available via Wise, and 200 via Western Union by the end of the year.

Kusal Perera named Sri Lanka’s ODI captain

• Kusal Perera has been named Sri Lanka’s ODI captain ahead of their three-match series against Bangladesh. • Kusal Mendis has been named as the 18-man squad’s vice-captain. • The team leaves for Bangladesh on May 16 to take part in a three-match ODI series. • Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Cricket has announced that the second edition of the Lanka Premier League will be held from July 30 to August 22 despite a surge in the COVID-19 cases in the island.

• Central Govt in consultation with RBI has decided to issue Sovereign Gold Bonds for 2021-22 • It will be issued in 6 tranches from 17th May to September 2021 • Sold through: Scheduled Commercial banks (except SFBs and Payment Banks), Stock Holding Corporation, designated post offices and recognized stock exchanges • Minimum permissible investment: 1 gram gold • Tenor: 8 years with exit after 5th year • Interest Rate: 2.50% per annum payable semi-annually on the nominal value.

World Bank reported India as largest recipient of remittances in 2020

• World Bank has released Migration and Development Brief report in which India has been declared as the largest recipient of remittances in 2020 with over $83 billion, which is a drop of 0.2% from 2019 (USD83.3 billion) • India has been the largest recipient of remittances since 2008 • India is followed by China, Mexico, Philippines and Egypt • Globally, the remittance flow was $540 billion in 2020, which is 1.9% lower as compared to that of 2019, when it was $548 billion
