The funds will be used to distribute nutritious food to individuals at risk of hunger in the Food Bank’s twelve-county service area. Because we work in conjunction with Feeding America, every dollar donated to the Food Bank of Northeast Arkansas can help provide 4 meals. “One in five people struggles with hunger in Northeast Arkansas including vulnerable children and seniors,” said Christie Jordan, CEO of the Food Bank of Northeast Arkansas. “Hunger does not discriminate and there are many children, families, and seniors who turn to our food bank for help. The Darden Foundation’s donation will go a long way for the people in our community. The grant to the Food Bank was on behalf of local Darden Restaurants including Olive Garden, LongHorn Steakhouse, and Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen.” The Food Bank of Northeast Arkansas, a member of the Feeding America network, is one of 192 food banks to receive this funding from The Darden Foundation. It is projected that this grant will enable the Food Bank of Northeast Arkansas to provide the equivalent of 12,000 meals to struggling families in Northeast Arkansas. The program empowers each restaurant in the Darden family of brands to help award a $1,000 grant to support local community programs that align with three focus areas: access to postsecondary education, preservation of natural resources and hunger. The grants program is designed to deepen local connections through continued investment in the communities where Darden employees live and work. Food Waste Overview 2015 Why Food Waste? In the United States today one in six Americans lack a safe secure supply of food while 40% of the food goes uneaten. Americans are wasting an equivalent of $165 billion each year in food waste, and the decomposition of these uneaten foods account for 23% of the U.S. total methane emissions. Reducing food waste is a means to save money, reduce GHG emissions, and feed hungry people. Reducing food waste represents a significant economic opportunity Reducing food waste is an economic opportunity for retailers and foodservice providers. Buying only what is needed will decrease purchasing costs, donating edible food to charities can increase tax deductions, and selling compost made up of food scraps will increase revenue. Reducing food waste is part of the solution to climate change Decomposition of all uneaten foods in the U.S. account for 23% of the country’s total methane emissions. Discarded food accounts for 21% of the volume that goes into landfills. The portion of this wasted food that ends up in landfills as organic matter accounts for 16% of U.S. methane emissions. If food waste were its own country it would be the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases behind only China and the United States. Getting food from the farm to our fork eats up 10% of total U.S. energy budget, 50% of U.S. land, and 80% of all freshwater consumed in the U.S. Reducing food waste is a means for a company to be more socially responsible The U.S.
