Atlanta Hawks Star Howard Encourages Children to Read Dream
A newsletter for friends and employees of Georgia’s public libraries volume 14, issue 6 I June 2017 Staff Atlanta Hawks star Howard encourages children to read In addition to his role as center for his hometown basketball team, the Atlanta Hawks’ Dwight Howard plays a lesser-known role in another important local arena – championing literacy for the state’s youngest kids. Last fall, Howard’s literacy efforts resulted in a meeting with Jeff Kinney, author of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid book series, when Kinney was in town shooting the latest film adaptation from the book series, “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul.” Kinney invited the eight-time NBA All-Star to visit the set, and a friendship formed. Howard asked to host the film’s Atlanta debut, as a reward and incentive for Atlanta’s young readers, including past participants of the Atlanta Hawks’ Check It Out Reading Challenge (CIORC) at Georgia’s public libraries. On May 14, Howard and Kinney hosted an exclusive Howard joins Kayleigh Stargell, Demetrius Longmire, Sam and Charlie screening of the film and invited a number of lucky Capretta, and Laila Byrd on the READ carpet, who were among the young readers to join them, cast members and other winners of the D12 Foundation’s video contest to promote reading. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Sept. 25, 2019 STINGRAYS ANNOUNCE FULL 2019-20 PROMOTIONAL SCHEDULE Fun, Exciting Themes Planned for Team’s 27th ECHL Year NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. – The South Carolina Stingrays have unveiled their promotional schedule for the upcoming 2019-20 season which includes many fun, exciting themes and giveaways for fans in attendance. Tickets for groups of 10 or more start at just $15 and can be ordered through the Stingrays office by calling 843-744-2248 during business hours. In addition to all the team’s special theme nights, Tuesday home games will feature a Stingrays Happy Hour which includes $2 beers from 6-8 p.m. and all Sunday home games will begin at the family-friendly time of 3:05 p.m. presented by Crews Subaru and Charleston County Parks. The excitement kicks off with Pack The House Night on Oct. 19 with discounted tickets, free parking, performances by singer-songwriter Morgan Myles, and a Fan Fest before the game from 3-6 p.m. South Carolina will wear a total of six specialty uniforms throughout the season during some of their most anticipated games including Hockey Fights Cancer Night, Marvel Super Hero Night, Military Appreciation Night, Nickelodeon Night, DC Comics Night and Pink In The Rink Night. A SALUTE TO OUR SENIORS If anyone is counting, our graduating seniors are wrapping up their K–12 academic careers with more than 15,200 hours of teach- ing and learning. (That’s 6.5 hours for 180 days for 13 years for those doing the math at home.) After all that hard work, we’re not surprised that this largest-ever class of more than 12,600 on-track graduates is ready to cross the stage to accept their diploma and turn their tassels. Graduation ceremonies for the district’s 22 diploma-granting high schools started with Phoenix HS on May 21 and wrap up on May 26 with Mountain View HS. -

Premier ‘AA’ Hockey League NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Oct. 09, 2020 ECHL confirms start date for 2020-21 Season PRINCETON, N.J. –The ECHL, in conjunction with the Professional Hockey Players’ Association, announced today that the 2020-21 Season will commence on December 11, 2020 under a split-season format. Under the split-season guidelines, the following 13 teams will begin a 72-game season on December 11th – Allen, Florida, Greenville, Indy, Jacksonville, Kansas City, Orlando, Rapid City, South Carolina, Tulsa, Utah, Wheeling and Wichita. Additionally, remaining ECHL teams will begin their Season on January 15, 2021, competing in a 62-game season upon jurisdictional approval. The Atlanta Gladiators have elected a Voluntary Suspension for the 2020-21 Season due to COVID-19 restrictions, returning to play in the 2021-22 Season. All Atlanta Gladiators Players are immediately Free Agents for the 2020-21 Season. “The ECHL is excited to be able to confirm the beginning of the 2020-21 Season by working with our local health officials and the PHPA to develop protocols for the safe return of our Players, fans, and employees,” said ECHL Commissioner Ryan Crelin. “The ECHL is getting back to hockey, as we all work together to bring live entertainment back to our communities.” “Our ECHL Members have been looking forward to getting back on the ice since March 16, and providing the fans with exciting hockey in a safe environment,” said PHPA Executive Director Larry Landon. “I would like to thank Ryan Crelin, the ECHL Board of Governors and the commitment from our Return to Play Committee including Jake Flegel, Josh Holmstrom, Steven Kaunisto, Justin Taylor and Riley Weselowski.” The ECHL regular season will conclude on June 6, 2021. -
