  • Luciano Pavarotti Is Dead at 71
September 6, 2007 Luciano Pavarotti Is Dead at 71 By BERNARD HOLLAND Luciano Pavarotti, the Italian singer whose ringing, pristine sound set a standard for operatic tenors of the postwar era, died Thursday at his home near Modena, in northern Italy. He was 71. His death was announced by his manager, Terri Robson. The cause was pancreatic cancer. In July 2006 he underwent surgery for the cancer in New York, and he had made no public appearances since then. He was hospitalized again this summer and released on Aug. 25. Like Enrico Caruso and Jenny Lind before him, Mr. Pavarotti extended his presence far beyond the limits of Italian opera. He became a titan of pop culture. Millions saw him on television and found in his expansive personality, childlike charm and generous figure a link to an art form with which many had only a glancing familiarity. Early in his career and into the 1970s he devoted himself with single- mindedness to his serious opera and recital career, quickly establishing his rich sound as the great male operatic voice of his generation — the “King of the High Cs,” as his popular nickname had it. By the 1980s he expanded his franchise exponentially with the Three Tenors projects, in which he shared the stage with Plácido Domingo and José Carreras, first in concerts associated with the World Cup and later in world tours. Most critics agreed that it was Mr. Pavarotti’s charisma that made the collaboration such a success. The Three Tenors phenomenon only broadened his already huge audience and sold millions of recordings and videos.

  • New Releases June 2017
NEW RELEASE JUNE 2017 NEW RELEASES JUNE 2017 www.dynamic.it • [email protected] DYNAMIC Srl • www.dynamic.it • [email protected] 1 NEW RELEASE JUNE 2017 DON CARLO GIUSEPPE VERDI First performed in French at the Paris Opera in 1867, Don Carlo is in many ways an amazingly innovative work. The opera seems to underline Verdi’s shift from the Manichean division between good and evil, which had been a clear, structural element of his dramaturgy up to that point in his career. In this opera, Verdi assembles all his mainstay music theatre themes: power, with its honours and burdens; the contrasts of impossible love; the conflict between father and son; and an oppressed people demanding freedom. Verdi radically revised the score in 1883, using an Italian libretto and reducing the opera from five acts to four. The popularity of Don Carlo has grown unremittingly ever since, with today's critics almost unanimously recognising it as one of Verdi’s greatest masterpieces, an opera that continues to reveal new gems. Daniel Oren is fully in control on the podium, ensuring unanimity between orchestra and singers. The Maestro softens the dark DON CARLO tones of the score, which are well reflected in the visuals, choosing Dramma lirico in four Acts instead to emphasise the various changes of mood. Composer KEY FEATURES GIUSEPPE VERDI (1813 – 1901) Excellent cast for the opening season of Festival Verdi – Teatro Regio di Parma. Libretto by Resounding success, sustained applause, especially for the Joseph Méry e Camille du Locle bass Michele Pertusi as Filippo II. Italian translation by Achille De Lauzières and Angelo Zanardini Available in CD, DVD, Bluray.

  • Of Operatic Love Courtesan
    E. Giuseppe Verdi (1813–1901) Finally to the first act of La traviata (1854), a highly unusual work in Verdi’s output in that it treats a contemporary subject taken from a play currently playing on French stages. Violetta Valéry is a Paris Vagaries of Operatic Love courtesan. Knowing that she is dying of tuberculosis, she is set on going out in a froth of champagne. But then she meets an admirer, Alfredo Germont, who tries to persuade her to give up this life and move with him to the peace of the country. As we discover in Act Two, she will do so, but not without ending Act One in an aria that is the most remarkable internal examination of the feelings of a woman 11 in love yet seen on the opera stage. The innovative production by Willy Decker was first seen in Salzburg 12 in 2005 and later brought to the Met. Alas, it was replaced by a much less inventive one last season. — La traviata, Act I, second half 18 Anna Netrebko, Rolando Villazón.
