David Lewis on Convention Ernie Lepore and Matthew Stone Center for Cognitive Science Rutgers University David Lewis’s landmark Convention starts its exploration of the notion of a convention with a brilliant insight: we need a distinctive social competence to solve coordination problems. Convention, for Lewis, is the canonical form that this social competence takes when it is grounded in agents’ knowledge and experience of one another’s self-consciously flexible behavior. Lewis meant for his theory to describe a wide range of cultural devices we use to act together effectively; but he was particularly concerned in applying this notion to make sense of our knowledge of meaning. In this chapter, we give an overview of Lewis’s theory of convention, and explore its implications for linguistic theory, and especially for problems at the interface of the semantics and pragmatics of natural language. In §1, we discuss Lewis’s understanding of coordination problems, emphasizing how coordination allows for a uniform characterization of practical activity and of signaling in communication. In §2, we introduce Lewis’s account of convention and show how he uses it to make sense of the idea that a linguistic expression can come to be associated with its meaning by a convention. Lewis’s account has come in for a lot of criticism, and we close in §3 by addressing some of the key difficulties in thinking of meaning as conventional in Lewis’s sense. The critical literature on Lewis’s account of convention is much wider than we can fully survey in this chapter, and so we recommend for a discussion of convention as a more general phenomenon Rescorla (2011). -

Born in Andalusia in 1126, Averroes (or Ibn Rushd) is generally considered one of the most influential Arabic classical philosophers, and his impact on Western thought, through the interpretations of Thomas Aquinas, Duns Scotus, and others, can hardly be overestimated. Although Averroes wrote extensively in the fields of religious law (Bidayat al-Mujtahid wa Nihayat al-Muqtasad), philosophy (The Incoherence of the Incoherence) and their relationship (Decisive Treatise), his nickname, the Great Commentator, is a result of Averroes’ prolific commentaries on Greek philosophy, and particularly the works of Aristotle. The date of completion of Averroes’ Long Commentary is, although debatable, usually given at around 1186 C.E., and while its chronological relationship to the Short and Middle Commentaries (and therefore status as Averroes’ ‘final opinion’ on the De Anima) is debatable, the Long Commentary certainly presents Averroes’ most detailed examination of the De Anima. In form, it is basically a line-by-line exegesis, with Averroes reproducing Aristotle’s work and then proceeding to provide explanation, extension, and interpretation. Averroes’ Long Commentary is key to tracing how Averroes interpreted Aristotle’s work on the soul and how his own concept of the soul developed from his reading of Aristotle. Lewis on conventions and meaning phil 93914 Jeff Speaks April 3, 2008 Lewis (1975) takes the conventions in terms of which meaning can be analyzed to be conventions of truthfulness and trust in a language. His account may be adapted to state an analysis of a sentence having a given meaning in a population as follows: x means p in a population G≡df (1a) ordinarily, if a member of G utters x, the speaker believes p, (1b) ordinarily, if a member of G hears an utterance of x, he comes to believe p, unless he already believed this, (2) members of G believe that (1a) and (1b) are true, (3) the expectation that (1a) and (1b) will continue to be true gives members of G a good reason to continue to utter x only if they believe p, and to expect the same of other members of G, (4) there is among the members of G a general preference for people to continue to conform to regularities (1a) and (1b) (5) there is an alternative regularity to (1a) and (1b) which is such that its being generally conformed to by some members of G would give other speakers reason to conform to it (6) all of these facts are mutually known by members of G Some objections: • Clause (5) should be dropped, because, as Burge (1975) argued, this clause makes Lewis's conditions on linguistic meaning too strong. Burge pointed out that (5) need not be mutually known by speakers for them to speak a meaningful language. Consider, for example, the case in which speakers believe that there is no possible language other than their own, and hence that there is no alternative regularity to (1a) and (1b). -

Taylor Marquette University This article explicates Averroes's understanding of human knowing and abstraction in this three commentaries on Aristotle's De Anima. While Averroes's views on the nature of the human material intellect changes through the three commentaries until he reaches is famous view of the unity of the material intellect as one for all human beings, his view of the agent intellect as 'form for us' is sustained throughout these works. In his Long Commentary on the De Anima he reveals his dependence on al-Farabi for this notion and provides a detailed critique of the Farabian notion that the agent intellect is 'form for us' only as agent cause, not as our true formal cause. Although Averroes argues that the agent intellect must somehow be intrinsic to us as our form since humans 2tieper se rational and undertake acts of knowing by will, his view is shown to rest on an equivocal use of the notion of formal cause. -

LIVING IN DOUBT: CARNEADES’ PITHANON RECONSIDERED SUZANNE OBDRZALEK I though the interpretation of ancient texts is inevitably di¶cult, Carneades presents what one might call a worst-case scenario. In the first place, he wrote nothing. To complicate matters, Carneades’ views were so obscure that his faithful disciple Clitomachus con- fessed that he could never figure out what Carneades actually be- lieved (Cic. Acad. 2. 139). Showing remarkable fortitude in the face of such an obstacle, Clitomachus, attempting to play Plato to Carneades’ Socrates, reportedly recorded Carneades’ teachings in 400 books (D.L. 4. 67). Not one remains. None the less, Clito- machus’ attempt to make a philosophy of Carneades’ anti-theoreti- cal stance was not a complete failure; Carneades had a tremendous influence on the later Academy as well as the Stoa, and his views (or lack thereof) have been handed down to us by both Sextus Em- piricus and Cicero. These sources are, however, problematic. As a Pyrrhonist, Sextus was critical of the Academy and may have ex- aggerated what he took to be Carneades’ dogmatism. Cicero, on the other hand, a student of Philo, was undoubtedly influenced in his interpretation of Carneades by his teacher’s dogmatic scepti- cism. Carneades is perhaps best known for proposing the pithan»e phantasia (probable impression) as a criterion for life. However, the status of his theory of the pithanon (probable) is completely unclear.1 Was it merely a dialectical move against the Stoic charge of apraxia (inaction)? BREAKING THE STOIC LANGUAGE: PHILO’S ATTITUDE TOWARDS ASSENT (SUNKATATHESIS) AND COMPREHENSION (KATALÊPSIS) CARLOS LEVY, Paris IV-Sorbonne University Neither Cicero nor Philo are generally considered true philosophers. However they made rather significant contributions to philosophy. Cicero was the first to think that philosophy could be exposed in a language other than Greek. The beginning of the first book of the Libri Academici shows how strange this decision, which now appears as evident, seemed at the time.1 Philo did not have to contend with this kind of problem since Greek was his native language, the one which the Jewish community of Alexandria considered as perfectly legitimate to express the word of God.2 But, by connecting philosophy and monotheism, after some others whose works did not survive, he opened a new chapter in the history of philosophy.3 At the time of Cicero and Philo, Stoicism was still the predominant philosophical system. Of course, it was in a way “le début de la fin,” since the revival of Aristotelianism after a long period of decay, and the irruption of Middle Platonism were going to break the triad which characterized the Hellenistic period: Stoicism, Epicureanism, and the Scepticism (even if the term is perhaps inadequate) of the New Academy. In this triad Stoicism was indubitably the most active element, especially because Stoic philosophers succeeded in imposing their conceptual innovations even to their opponents, especially in the fields of psychology and gnoseology so that it can be said that our actual gnoseological vocabulary is deeply rooted in this doctrine. Among these innovations, the concept of assent, sunkatathesis had a central role, since it was at the same time the mark of a personality, the factor of all kind of decisions and the transition between knowledge and ethics.4 Stoicism was for Philo both a treasure of philosophical notions and an enemy since it represented the most perfect form of immanentism in ancient philosophy, a form of thought that a thinker who 1 Lib. -
