Theosophical teacher, G de Purucker, Iwrites of ‘The Potency of Sound’ and vibration including the famous mantra, ‘AUM (Om)’, and the use of vibration by the Hierarchy of Light to protect mankind with the mysterious ‘Guardian Wall’. Graeme Edge and James Feinstein put a poetic perspective on the powers of sound. Normandi Ellis turns our mind to the wisdom of the ancient Egyptians and their profound knowledge of the power of the ‘Name’. Our feature article deals in depth with ‘Mantras, Holy Prayers, Sounds, Chanting the Names of Divinity and Stories of the God(s) and Goddess(s)’. But what are Mantras from a theosophical point of view? “Mantra (Sanskrit) Mantra. That portion of the Vedas which consist of hymns as distinct from the Brahmana and Upanishad portions. The mantras considered esoterically were originally as magical as they were religious in character, although the former today is virtually forgotten, although remembered as a fact which once was. In the composing of the mantras the rishis (sages) of old knew that every letter had its occult significance, and that the vowels especially contain occult and even formidable potencies when properly chanted. The words of the SEPTEMBER 2021 / «THEOSOPHY DOWNUNDER» 3 mantra were made to convey a certain hid meaning by certain secret rules involving first the secret potency of their sound, and incidentally the numerical value of the letters; the latter however was relatively unimportant. Hence their merely verbal significance is something quite different from their meaning as understood of old. The language of incantations or mantras is the element-language composed of sounds, numbers, and figures. He who knows how to blend the three will call forth the response from the regent-god of the specific element needed. For, in order to communicate with the gods, men must learn to address each one of them in the language of his element. We had one version of our revered book, and we knew that this version was almost exactly as its scribe, Helen Schucman, heard it, straight from Jesus. She herself gave this impression in the Course’s preface: Only a few minor changes have been made. Chapter titles and subheadings have been inserted in the Text, and some of the more personal references that occurred at the beginning have been omitted. Otherwise the material is substantially unchanged. Then everything changed. In January of 2000, an earlier version of the Course, called the Hugh Lynn Cayce Version, was disseminated on the Internet. Later in that same year, an even earlier version, called the Urtext, also became available on the Internet. Both versions showed that the Course as we knew it had gone through a far more extensive editing process than anyone had suspected. While before we felt the comfort of knowing that our scripture, unlike so many others, was free of human influence, we now began to wonder how much of the Course was altered by human editors. We also wondered which was the “true” version. Indeed, the Hugh Lynn Cayce Version was quickly published under the rather in-your-face title Jesus’Course in Miracles (and just as quickly became unavailable due to a court injunction).

    A Course In Miracles By Rick Branch Founders: Helen Schucman and William Thetford Founding Date: 1965 Official Publication: While there are no official publications, The Holy Encounter is one of the major publications promoting the philosophy of A Course In Miracles. Organization Structure: There are hundreds of small study groups scattered across the country, each organized on an informal basis, for the express purpose of studying the Course. Unique Terms: While the Course has no truly unique terms, it defines common Christian terms in a unique way. Be aware of this fact when speaking to or listening to those who are followers of the Course. HISTORY In October 1965, Helen Schucman, an associate professor of medical psychology at Columbia University in New York, began receiving channeled messages from a speaker who would later identify himself as Jesus Christ.1 For the next ten years the voice is said to have dictated “in an inaudible voice” the three volume, 1,188 page, 500,000 word book known as A Course In Miracles.2 One of Schucman’s colleagues was Dr. William Thetford, a clinical psychologist at Columbia University. While he never heard the voice, he was instrumental in the publication of the Course. Raised in the Christian Science church, Thetford believed the Course was a representation of the “original teachings of Jesus.”3 In 1972, Schucman and Thetford met Dr. Kenneth Wapnick of the Foundation for Inner Peace. The Copyright for the Course was turned over to Wapnick and his organization in 1975. This action is followed in September of the same year with the publication of the first edition of A Course In Miracles.4 Schucman died in February 1981 and Thetford in 1988.

In it, and in a stylized way, Helen recounted selected events and periods, in particular how she came to scribe A Course in Miracles and the conflicting emotions she experienced during the process. Yet for personal reasons, being the very private and self-conscious person she was, Helen decided it would not add to this portrayal of herself by including more than she did. Nevertheless, the events and selected periods of her life Helen did choose to write about, for the most part, reliably reflect her thoughts and feelings about some of the key moments and turning points she experienced. As a result, they provide ample biographical material for becoming better acquainted with her as an individual. "A Course in Miracles" is a way to live with more peace and love by asking the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the Voice of God to help us to remember God. It focuses on the practice of forgiveness, to remind us that we are all Spirits, One in God. The Miracle is when we choosing to forgive, that is when we choose to change our mind, choosing to see Spirit, beyond the body, choosing the Voice of God and not the ego. Therefore "A Course in Miracles" teaches us to remember our Oneness with God and to go Home to Heaven by healing our relationships with ourselves and others through forgiveness which leads to the undoing of the ego and unconscious guilt. "A Course in Miracles" maintains that it is one way to remember who we are and that there are many other valid spiritual paths. Although the language of the Course is Christian, it expresses a non- sectarian, non-denominational, non-dualistic spirituality which is presented in various other spiritual traditions such as in Buddhism, Hinduism, Taoism, Sufi and Zen. "A Course in Miracles" is not a religion but a spiritual way of thinking about our self, the world and God which promote deep healing and inner peace. "A Course in Miracles" was “scribed” by Dr Helen Schucman through a process of inner dictation she identified as coming from Jesus.

Introduction In Religious Experience Reconsidered, I argued that we should not focus on “religious experience” as if it were comprised of a fixed and stable set of ex- periences but on how people decide on the meaning and significance of their experiences. This book tests the method outlined in that book on a particu- lar type of experience that has played a central role in the formation of many spiritual paths—experiences of presence that some consider “revelatory.” In using the word “revelatory,” I am deliberately adopting a term loaded with theological meaning and recasting it in a way that I believe will allow us to investigate processes that inform many spiritual paths as they emerge, whether they are explicitly viewed as “revealed religions” or not. I refer to such experiences as “events,” that is, as “happenings,” because “events” pro- vide a promising link between the psychological, which focuses on “event cognition,” and the sociocultural, which focuses on narratives of events. Experiences are events—meaningful wholes—that we pick out from the stream of experience. My focus here, as a historian with interests in cognitive science, is on events that people experienced firsthand and the processes whereby they came to believe that something had been revealed by or via a suprahuman source. Revelation as Event In referring to revelatory events, I am focusing on one of the three different ways the concept of revelation is used in the modern context.
