Hunt 2018 Running head: A GRATEFUL MIND 2 Abstract The practice of gratitude has become increasingly prevalent in popular culture as a self- help intervention aimed at improving individuals’ happiness and overall well-being. Although a great deal of empirical work has promoted the benefits of practicing gratitude (see Davis et al., 2016 for a review), less work has been conducted examining the conditions under which the traditional gratitude interventions are less effective, or even entirely ineffective. One potential boundary condition that may be associated with the benefit individuals report after engaging in the practice of gratitude is fluency – an individual’s subjective experience of ease or difficulty. When tasks are experienced as relatively easy, people are more likely to indicate they possess the qualities inherent within the task (e.g., Schwarz et al., 1991). That is, if a gratitude exercise is experienced with relative ease, this ought to be reflected in their subsequent self-relevant judgments (e.g., greater reported gratitude and well-being). In Studies 1-3 we attempted to manipulate fluency (i.e., subjective experience of ease) in a common gratitude intervention in order to assess its role as a potential moderator between the practice of gratitude and well-being. Although the manipulation was unsuccessful, we found individual difference evidence that engaging in a gratitude task was associated with greater well-being when the task was experienced as subjectively easy; but was no different from a control when the task was experienced as subjectively difficult. Next, we tried to mitigate the negative impact of low fluency by providing an alternative explanation for its meaning – namely that it was not important diagnostically (Study 4) or that it indicated more meaningful responding (Study 5). Although Study 5 showed some dampening of the effect of fluency, it failed to reach significance. Finally, overall effects were examined in a series of meta-analyses. Overall, the results provided evidence that gratitude tasks were associated with greater well-being when they Running head: A GRATEFUL MIND 3 were experienced as easy, but were no better than a control when they were experienced as difficult. Further, as subjective difficulty increased, gratitude tasks became less effective (as evidenced by an overall negative slope) as a means of boosting well-being; control tasks however were unaffected by subjective difficulty (as evidenced by a flat slope). These studies represent some of the first steps toward understanding the role of individuals’ phenomenological experience in response to a gratitude intervention. Future directions and real-world implications are discussed. In working, not only have individuals always be in the enjoyable situation, they also have pressures that lead to stress. Individual workers face a different stress; some people deal it negatively, while the other deal it positively. Gratitude encourages positive emotions. The presence of positive emotions can eliminate the negative emotions which reduce the job stress levels of individual. This research aims to determine the relationship between the gratitude and job stress on guard officers in the state prison. The sampling technique used in this study is saturated sampling where all the 40 guard officer populations were used as the sample. The two measuring instruments used in this study were adaptation scale-6 Gratitude Questionnaire (GQ-6) developed by McCullough, Emmons, and Tsang and the scale of occupational stress scale (OSS) developed by House, McMichael, Wells, Kaplan, and Landerman. The results of data analysis using Pearson correlation technique showed a correlation coefficient (r) of - 0.492 with p = 0.001 (p <0.05). Based on these results, the hypothesis is accepted which can be concluded that there is a significant correlation between the negative emotions and gratitude with job stress on guard officers in state prison. The results also indicated that the State Prison guard officers have a high category of gratitude with low job stress.

Gratitude has a positive effect on physical, psychological and social well-being (Shankland, 2016). There are different ways to cultivate gratitude in one’s daily life; an intervention called “the gratitude journal” has been shown to increase positive affect (including happiness) and life satisfaction (Emmons & McCullough, 2003). People also tend to differ in their level of grateful disposition – the tendency to be grateful (McCullough, Emmons, & Tsang, 2002; Shankland, 2016). Religiosity is involvement in personal sacred and religious practices and activities. It is linked to a higher life satisfaction, health and happiness (Abdel-Khalek, 2006; Aghababaei, 2013). Gratitude is a central concept in conventional world religions (Emmons & Crumpler, 2000). McCullough, Emmons & Tsang (2002) found that people with a higher grateful disposition tended to be more religious. Prayer also plays an important role in gratitude: in general, the more people pray, the more grateful they become (Lambert, Fincham, Braithwaite, Graham, & Beach, 2009). Objective: In the current study, we were interested in studying the impact of the gratitude journal intervention on gratitude, happiness and life satisfaction, and the link with religiosity. We hypothesiZed that the participants in the gratitude condition would have a significant impact on their gratitude, happiness and life satisfaction in comparison with the neutral condition. We also hypothesiZed that the impact of the gratitude journal would be less significant for religious people in comparison with non-religious people due to their higher grateful disposition and/or due to their prayer frequency.

Drawing on the social distance theory of power, we report four studies that examine how relative power influences feelings and expressions of gratitude. An archival analysis of author acknowledgements in published academic articles (N = 1,272) revealed that low-power authors expressed more gratitude than high-power authors. A pre-registered experiment (N = 283) involving live conversations online found that having relatively low power caused increased feelings and expressions of gratitude after benefiting from a favor. Another pre-registered experiment (N = 356) demonstrated that increased interpersonal orientation among lower power individuals and increased psychological entitlement among higher power individuals drove these effects. Finally, an archival analysis of conversational exchanges (N = 136,215) among Wikipedia editors revealed that relational history moderated the effect of relative power on gratitude expression. Overall, our findings highlight when and why relative power influences feelings and expressions of gratitude. One minute introduction video: Kindness Matters As we are entering the eighth week since lockdown began, it’s a good time to reflect and think about all the kindness and gratitude we have witnessed so far. We have seen first-hand our everyday heroes in the shape of key workers, and the country uniting to thank them for their continuous hard work. We have seen children putting rainbows in their window, demonstrating solidarity. We have seen people offering support to those who can’t leave the house to get their essentials and purely selfless acts from the likes of Captain Tom raising money for the NHS. Whilst we can’t, and won’t forget the sadness which Covid-19 has brought to many of our lives, we hope that when we look back at the unprecedented time we found ourselves in, we will remember the kindness that shone through and feel that sense of gratitude. Random Acts of Kindness during Covid-19 Right now, there are many things which we can’t control. However, one thing we can control is the kindness we show to other people. Whilst random acts of kindness have always played a pivotal part in expressing gratitude and forming relationships, they’re now more important than ever. Whilst it was much easier to show random acts of kindness without social distancing re- strictions in place, there are still so many innovative ways we can demonstrate kindness and gratitude.

In a study by McCullough and Emmons (2003), participants completed extensive weekly journals for 10 weeks in Intervention which they rated their mood, physical health, and overall life experience. Participants were 5-10 min randomly divided into three groups: one group wrote down five things for which they were grateful every week (the gratitude condition), the second group wrote down weekly Client hassles (the hassle condition), and the third group listed five neutral events that barely Yes affected them (the events condition). The participants in the events condition, otherwise specified as the control condition, were not told to accentuate the positive or negative aspects of those experiences. The results indicated that those in the gratitude condition reported fewer health complaints. More specifically, participants in the gratitude group experienced fewer symptoms of physical illness compared to those in either of the other two groups. In addition, people in the gratitude condition spent significantly more time exercising (nearly 1.5 hours more per week) compared to those in the hassles condition. Goal The goal of this exercise is to increase gratitude by keeping a journal. Advice Although being grateful can result in positive effects, it is important to make sure that clients do not use gratitude to avoid or deny the negative things in life. In addition, make sure clients understand that gratitude is not only about “big” things. Drinking a cup a coffee or having a nice conversation are all good examples of things that one can be grateful for, among other things.

Given the crucial role of Subjective well-being on familial and societal well-being, and its varied benefits, there is a plethora of explorations on subjective well-being. Gratitude, along with its multiple positive benefits, is found to be closely related to subjective well-being. In this regard, this study evolves a Gratitude Interventional Programme (GIP) of 32 days, consisting of Counting Blessings, Grateful Contemplations, Gratitude Visits and Watching a Gratitude Movie. The sample consists of 156 eleventh class students 15-16 years of age (72 males, 84 females). They were randomly assigned to both experimental and control group. Gratitude Questionnaire – Six item Form (GQ-6) and subjective Well Being inventory were administered before and after the intervention. Experimental group was offered Gratitude Interventional Programme (GIP) for 32 days. Data shows that GIP has significantly enhanced the level of gratitude, seven positive dimensions of SWB, total SWB and further decreased four negative dimensions of SWB. Females have more total SWB than males in the experimental group. GIP seems to be an effective intervention for well-being enhancement in adolescents. Implications and limitations are discussed.
