Calendar of Roman Events
Introduction Steve Worboys and I began this calendar in 1980 or 1981 when we discovered that the exact dates of many events survive from Roman antiquity, the most famous being the ides of March murder of Caesar. Flipping through a few books on Roman history revealed a handful of dates, and we believed that to fill every day of the year would certainly be impossible. From 1981 until 1989 I kept the calendar, adding dates as I ran across them. In 1989 I typed the list into the computer and we began again to plunder books and journals for dates, this time recording sources. Since then I have worked and reworked the Calendar, revising old entries and adding many, many more. The Roman Calendar The calendar was reformed twice, once by Caesar in 46 BC and later by Augustus in 8 BC. Each of these reforms is described in A. K. Michels’ book The Calendar of the Roman Republic. In an ordinary pre-Julian year, the number of days in each month was as follows: 29 January 31 May 29 September 28 February 29 June 31 October 31 March 31 Quintilis (July) 29 November 29 April 29 Sextilis (August) 29 December. The Romans did not number the days of the months consecutively. They reckoned backwards from three fixed points: The kalends, the nones, and the ides. The kalends is the first day of the month. For months with 31 days the nones fall on the 7th and the ides the 15th. For other months the nones fall on the 5th and the ides on the 13th. -

American History through Film Course Syllabus (Fall Semester) Since Thomas A. Edison patented America’s first motion picture camera in 1891, telling America’s history through film has become a large part of our culture. For many people watching a Hollywood film on America is their only way of getting to know her history (no matter how accurate the film). The films we will be watching for this class are Hollywood films rather than documentaries so they are reenactments of historical events not a documentary record of events. These Hollywood films may present content in four possible ways: 1. As a Factual Record: Film is used to dramatize events. 2. To Convey Atmosphere: The use of fiction to convey a sense of past – lifestyles, values, and beliefs. 3. Analogy: An historical events is used to point out or explain contemporary motives or actions, particularly when the event is controversial. 4. A lesson in Historiography: Because the dramatic form used in films requires consistent and relatively simple motivational interpretations, students can often learn how the time period in which the film was made interpreted historical personalities and events. This class is not a eat popcorn and watch movie class. The goal of this class is learn American History through watching movies. Each film will consist of 6 to 8 days of class work. This class work will be divided into three different areas. 1. The first area: a. Introduction to the time period. b. What the film is about. c. Where does the film fit-in? 2. The second area: a. -

The census categories were not ‘native Athenians, foreign residents and slaves’, but ‘citizens above the property qualification, residents without political rights and members of households’. The property qualification of 1,000 drachmas associated with Demetrius’ regime was the requirement for holding the highest offices; the property requirement for citizenship rights was lower, as it was in the spurious constitution of Draco described in Athenaion Politeia 4, which was probably invented and inserted during Demetrius’ reign. -

(570) 941-7577, Fax (570) 941-4825 Abstract: The philosophy (science) of Oeconomicos and economic policy were developed by Xenophon in Ancient Greece. Alexander the Great was living a little later in the 4th century B.C. and he is known globally as a great Greek (Hellen) general and civilizer; but, he was also, an excellent economist by managing the economy of his wars, his enormous campaign from North Greece to India, and exercising an efficient and effective public policy for his Empire. He had shown management capabilities, with rates of salaries, health and welfare, building projects, supplies, transports, reforms of the tax system, indirect taxes and donations, loans, minting of coins (currency), even controlling financial scandals and other information useful for our policy makers, today. The purpose of the paper is to measure his expenditures, revenues, and budgets by using the weights of gold and silver coins and determine and compare prices with today dollar prices of precious metals by taking these information from different historians of his time. Alexander economic policy with its surpluses is very useful for our current leaders and scholars. Also, the history and the role of this extraordinary man and of the Greek language in a divine plan, for a revolted and deluded creation and humanity to be in a position to understand and accept the revelation, which Greeks were expecting since 5th century B.C. -

The course first discusses what dress is and the methodology and purpose of the study of dress history, before moving onto a chronological survey of dress from ancient cultures up to, and including, the 21st century. Links between fashion, social history, and material culture are examined. The course is intended as background for students of theatrical design, but may be taken as an elective by anyone interested in the field. Zarkowski Since Thomas Edison patented America’s first motion picture camera in 1891, telling America’s history through film has become a large part of our culture.
