LETTERS

LETTER

For me this (see letters below) is all about the marshals on the course, at the finish and in the village hall. Kieran Carr

Thanks Keiran for a well organised event today, Please pass on our thanks to all the brave marshals who give up all there time, without them we could not have run today.

Thank you Sharon and Shaun Godsman.(see you next year)

Evening Kieran

Just a quick one to say thanks for all your hard work and organisation of the Tour of Pendle last weekend, esp thanks too to the marshals who braved the fairly rubbish weather to collect the bread tags.

It’s a great event and a real credit to CLeM as a club. cheers, Toby Cushion

LETTER

A big thank you to all the Clayton helpers at the Mid-Lancs XC League race at Towneley Park on the 11 November. There were record fields on the day. It ended up a good club effort - both running and helping.

Richard Lawson

LETTER

I would like to nominate Wendy Dodds and Jo Buckley for the run of the month award. They had a magnificent result in this years OMM - Original Mountain Marathon - formerly known as the KIMM. Wendy and Jo finshed 1st. Ladies team in the 'A' class in a total time of just over 14 hours over the two days. They beat the first mixed team by a good half hour and were delighted as it was Cath and Steve Wilson! Well done to you both. Wendy continues to compete at such a high level and produce excellent results like these. Truly amazing and an inspiration to us all.

Maureen Ashton

LETTER

I would like to nominate Richard Lawson for run of the month for October for winning the V65 5 mile championships at the Green Drive 5 15/10/06 in a time of 35.07, especially as he had put in a good performance in the x/c at Leyland the day before. Graham A Cunliffe

LETTER

I think that the Run of the Month for October should go to the veteran men's team for their excellent winning of the vets category in the Ian Hodgson relay, beating many youngsters in the process (including CLEM 'youths')

WOMEN’S 4 STAGE NATIONAL ROAD RELAY CHAMPIONSHIPS Saturday 21 October at Sutton Park, Birmingham 4 x 4.314km

Sent in by Tracy Mitchell

Many thanks to the individuals who represented the Clayton Ladies in what I would term a ‘Giant’ event in the road running calendar. Everyone put in a great effort and we finished 55th overall (98 teams at the start). A commendable result – Well Done! Special thanks to Irene for being such a star and stepping in at very short notice.

Leg 1 Maureen Laney (16:36) Leg 2 Sue Burns (17:21) Leg 3 Irene Roche (20:03) Leg 4 Tracy Mitchell (17:23)

The fastest leg of the day was by Helen Clitheroe (14:11) – something to aim for next year perhaps….

WADDINGTON 10K 22ND OCTOBER

Sent in by Richard Lawson

Cool and blustery, this one but a good entry of 186 with 174 finishing including 11 Clayton. But what a start! If we wrinklies warm up too much (or at all ) we're in danger of not finishing, but the first half straight up the Waddington Fell Road! I set off on the front row but out of the way of the rush and promptly got passed by 100. By the turn off McAllister had disappeared with Vinny not far behind. The two Martins were sorting each other out but the three in form men of the moment, Messrs Freary, Tattersall and Hayman had all located the village and were already off the front. Mark Brown was 6th and yet only 3rd M40 but beat Paul Muller for consolation. And then Tony Chew!

After the turn off the next mile or two are pleasant but then comes a quarter mile drag followed by a short and nasty one. After that it was plain sailing except for the opposition. Vinny and Nigel were beginning to come back as I had Bill Atkinson on my shoulder. They had their thoughts on Bashall Brewery enabling me to sneak past on the hill. Meanwhile John Amos was winning his battle with Howard Henshaw and Kitty ran exceptionally well to beat top-ranked Evelyn Elkington.

Funny how a little country race like this can attract so much talent:- M60 38.07, W60 47.06, M70 45.43, and M40 33.50 and, after the debate re. prizes we've had in the club, 20% of the men's field were M60+ !!

OBITUARY Tony Ball 1930-2006

Sent in by Bill Smith

Tony Ball, a Clayton Harrier for almost 30 years, passed away in his sleep on November 3rd. Tony began entering road races in 1973 and joined Liverpool Pembroke AC, but two years later he became interested in fell racing and soon transferred to Clayton.

Tony mainly preferred short and medium events, chiefly in the Pennines, though he did compete in the now-discontinued Three Towers Race, 20 miles over the East Lancashire moors. However, he will probably be best remembered for completing 27 consecutive Snowdon races, including this year’s event at the age of 76.

He won many veteran prizes in all the age categories and did numerous runs for charity, including Snowdon, which he ran the last two years for a Breast Cancer charity after his wife Lil became afflicted with the disease. He and Lil did a lot of fell walking together and Tony often led walks for a local rambling club. He was also a keen cyclist and in his latter years used his cycling to maintain fitness for fell races.

We extend our deepest sympathy to Lil and her family, which includes two sons, their wives and children.

LONGMYND HIKE 2007

Sent in by Simon Halliday

This years Longmynd hike also happened to be the last counter in the montrail ultra races and needing one more run to complete the series I found myself sending the not inconsiderable entry fee (£17.50) and doing battle with the M6 on the way to sunny Shropshire. Several hours driving and the occasional profanity saw me in Church Stretton just in time to park up on the school play ground as the caretaker was locking up for the night.

A glorious sunny morning and excellent forecast gave way to the first obstacle of this event, the kit check. This is a scout-organised race and they do ensure you carry full kit. No photocopies of

5 maps (even though one only has about 2” of the route on it), one guy got knocked back because his bandage wasn’t wide enough! And they even check the grip on your shoes. But don’t worry because they have their own shop as well.

Once through kit check the start is at the rather bizarre time of 1pm where nearly 500 people mill around until someone sounds the klaxon, and there off, considering some of this lot are supposed to be walking they can’t half move. The first check is after only a couple miles and up a fairly stiff climb, which at least settles the pace down to a more sensible level. The next is an out and back like quite a few on this course and you start to get a feel for the area. There is a lot of track and tarmac in this event, which is probably better to realise before you set off in fell shoes rather than a couple hours into it.

After about 12 miles the totally alien experience of running past a pub without stopping has to be dealt with. However this is easy compared to passing the same pub going the opposite way after about 40.

The course meanders around the Shropshire countryside but don’t be fooled they have a few steep hills down there making up some 8000 ft of climbing. There’s a bit of everything, some rough stuff, some quite steep ascents and descents and for my liking a bit too much tarmac, particularly later on when a 4-mile descent on the black stuff played havoc with my knees. Most of the checkpoints have liquid refreshments but you need to carry your own food.

Navigation is quite straightforward and in my case made all the easier by running most of the way with someone who knew where they were going (thanks Julian). During the hours of darkness runners are grouped in a minimum of three people, this occurred at around 32 miles and we had to wait for a third runner to catch up and in the brief respite we were able to experience the magical properties of sweet tea. Once there were three of us we could again carry on and slog it out to the finish. The final run through the streets of Church Stretton done with one eye on the clock and gritted teeth to finish in a somewhat flattering 9.59 in a 7th overall position.

All in all a cracking day out but don’t do it in fell shoes.

REPORT: TOUR OF PENDLE FELL RACE Saturday 18 November 2006

Sent in by Kieran Carr

Congratulations to Karl and Christine both first time winners of this race. In spite of the rain, hail, sleet and bitter wind people ran good times. 208 started and 201 finished. So many runners asked me to thank the marshals and I have received a letter of thanks and e-mails thanking them for their commitment, humour and friendship on the course and at the start and finish. I thanked them all as they came back to registration with their tags. Not one had lost their humour, they all

10 had smiles on their faces. Minor probs at the finish recording times and numbers with the showers soaking the paper but can solve that easily for next year. Thanks to Pete Bland Sports for the numbers and generous discount with the prizes. Next years race will be on Sat. 17th. November, the Village Hall is already booked, Mrs Weatherell will put soup, tea and cakes on again at reasonable prices. All the best for Christmas and the New Year, Kieran & Doreen.

LORD BYRON INN

Sent in by Mel Wilkinson-Walsh (former Clayton member)

We have opened a tasteful British pub and guesthouse on the coast of Montenegro. The place has been named after the 19th century romantic poet, traveller, adventurer and politician Lord Byron (George Gordon). Baron Byron of Rochdale shared our love of Montenegro, and our appreciation of the country's unique beauty.

Come and check out the first British pub in Montenegro run by genuine bona fide English folk (we have the scars to prove it). All the staff employed at the Byron can speak English and we are all on hand to provide you with any information you may need regarding local services and places of historical interest, or anything else you may need to know.

For more details contact us on [email protected]. Alternatively you can contact Dan on 00381 (0)67 89 77 96 or Mel on 00381 (0)67 306 806.

RETREAT

Sent in by Harry Manning

A man with a nagging secret couldn’t keep it any longer. In the confessional he admitted that for years he had been stealing building supplies from the builders’ yard where he worked. “What did you take?” his priest asked. Enough to build my own house and enough for my son’s house. And houses for our two daughters and our cottage at the lake.”

“This is very serious”, the priest said. “I shall have to think of a far-reaching penance. Have you ever done a retreat?”

“No, Father, I haven’t”, the man replied. “But if you can get the plans, I can get the materials.”

REFLECTIONS ON AGE! Anthony Damon, 81 Sent in by Richard Lawson year old US marathon runner Thre deafish wrinklies playing golf! "Phew! Windy isn';t it?" "No, it's Thursday." "So am I. Let's have a drink."

How else do you know you're a wrinkly?

You don't buy green bananas. You have more fingers than your own teeth. You bend down to the freezer and wonder what else you can do whilst you're down there. You get up in the middle of the night more times than George Clooney but not for the same reason. You turn off the light for economic reasons. You feel like the morning after the night before but haven't been anywhere. You see a young woman in the street with a bare midriff and worry she might be cold.

DON’T STAND UP!

Sent in by Harry Manning

“What happened?” asked the hospital visitor to the heavily bandaged man sitting up in bed. “Well, I went down to Blackpool at the weekend to take a ride on the roller coaster. As we came up to the top of the highest loop, I noticed a little sign by the side of the track. I tried to read it but it was very small and I couldn’t make it out. I was so curious that I decided to go round again, but we went by so quickly that I couldn’t see what the sign said. By now, I was determined to read that sign so I went round a third time. As we reached the top, I stood up in the car to get a better view.” “And did you manage to see what the sign said this time?” asked the visitor. “Yes.” “What did it say?” “Don’t stand up in the car!”

RUN WITH THE PRESIDENT

SAT. 13th JAN. 2007

AT 2.00 P.M.

FROM BLACKO CHAPEL

In the 1960's Clayton held Club Runs from various W.M.Cs in the local area. We would run for about an hour over local fields, tracks and stiles. Afterwards we often washed our legs in a mop bucket in the Gents, followed by coffee and a pie. This will be our 17th run from Blacko. I cannot provide a mop bucket but coffee/tea & biscuits should be available. Our record is 109 stiles in 97 minutes. (Don Barton called it Fartlek) I can't promise a record but there will be quite a few!

El Presidente.
