Part I – Introduction
Part I – Introduction Introduction to the Freewinds The owner of the Freewinds is the Church of Scientology. It may appear unusual that a religious organization runs a cruise ship, but the Church of Scientology historically has strong maritime ties. The founder of Scientology, L Ron Hubbard, was a naval commander during WWII before starting the Church in the fifties. In the late sixties he headed the Church from a small fleet of three ships. To run this fleet, he established an organization called the “Sea Org” the 1967 . The Sea Org soon developed into the religious order of the Church, responsible for outreach activities of the Church and delivering the highest levels of training within the Church, known as the Operating Thetan or OT levels. The Sea Org moved to back to land bases in 1975. However, the Church decided in 1985 to return to sea with the purchase of another vessel, the Freewinds. The Freewinds is staffed entirely by Sea Org members and is used as a religious retreat, conference centre and training location. In fact, it is the only place in the world where training for the Church’s highest level, OT VIII, can be received. Sea Org members consider themselves to be ministerial volunteers and they work for food, lodging and a small stipend. They have also signed an employment contract however1, so it is often unclear whether Sea Org members should be considered volunteers or employees from a legal point of view. For the purpose of this complaint, I will be assuming that crew members are legitimate volunteers meaning that the low salaries of crew do not constitute a non-conformity of minimum wage requirements. -

Ivan Macut SCIJENTOLOGIJA - TUMAČENJE OSNOVNIH POJMOVA Scientology - interpretation of basic concepts UDK: 298.9 Scijentizam Pregledni znanstveni rad Primljeno 9/2011. -

Other courses and auditing are also delivered on this ship, at prices much higher than anywhere else. It is a frequent holiday destination for public Scientologists anxious to limit their exposure to "entheta" in the real world. Because the Freewinds sails in international waters and is therefore outside the reach of any country's law enforcement, there is also reportedly a highly secret RPF on the ship, where Scientology's most high-level and legally dangerous defectors are sent for re-indoctrination. Some of the people who have been there in recent years have reportedly included Marty Rathbun, Ray Mithoff, Lyman Spurlock, Norman Starkey, and Mike Rinder, to name but a few. A licensed architect, Lawrence Woodcraft was assigned to prepare detailed plans for remodeling the interior cabins and other spaces on the Freewinds following its purchase by Scientology in 1987. Shortly after arriving on the ship, he noticed a powdery blue fibrous substance under a layer of paint. Upon closer inspection, he recognized it to be "blue" asbestos, the most dangerous form of this carcinogen. Lawrence has written a sworn Declaration concerning this discovery, his attempts to alert Sea Org officers (including David Miscavige's sister- in-law Bitty Miscavige) about the problem, and their refusal to remove it. -

Paul Haggis Vs. the Church of Scientology
PROFILES THE APOSTATE Paul Haggis vs. the Church of Scientology. by Lawrence Wright FEBRUARY 14, 2011 n August 19, 2009, Tommy Davis, the chief O spokesperson for the Church of Scientology International, received a letter from the film director and screenwriter Paul Haggis. “For ten months now I have been writing to ask you to make a public statement denouncing the actions of the Church of Scientology of San Diego,” Haggis wrote. Before the 2008 elections, a staff member at Scientology’s San Diego church had signed its name to an online petition supporting Proposition 8, which asserted that the State of California should sanction marriage only “between a man and a woman.” The proposition passed. As Haggis Asked how high he got in Scientology’s saw it, the San Diego church’s “public sponsorship of levels of study, Haggis said, “All the way to Proposition 8, which succeeded in taking away the civil the top.” Photograph by Mary Ellen Mark. rights of gay and lesbian citizens of California—rights that were granted them by the Supreme Court of our state—is a stain on the integrity of our organization and a stain on us personally. Our public association with that hate-filled legislation shames us.” Haggis wrote, “Silence is consent, Tommy. I refuse to consent.” He concluded, “I hereby resign my membership in the Church of Scientology.” Haggis was prominent in both Scientology and Hollywood, two communities that often converge. Although he is less famous than certain other Scientologists, such as Tom Cruise and John Travolta, he had been in the organization for nearly thirty-five years. -
The Aesthetic Theory of L. Ron Hubbard and the Freewinds As a Mobile Holy Land
The Aesthetic Theory of L. Ron Hubbard and the Freewinds as a Mobile Holy Land Massimo Introvigne CESNUR 2017 – Jerusalem A Unique Relationship Scientology’s founder, L. Ron Hubbard (1911-1986), offered a systematic theory of aesthetics, which is proposed in courses continuously offered to artists. Scientology’s influence on artists is organized, in a way that finds few parallels in other contemporary religions Scientology and the Visual Arts In order to further explore this relationship, I will discuss 1. Hubbard’s theory of aesthetics 2. Artists who are Scientologists (also based on personal interviews in Europe and the U.S.) 1. Hubbard’s Theory of Aesthetics Image: Scientology’s new Flag Building (2013) in Clearwater, Florida, with its statues A Gnostic Narrative At the beginning there were the «thetans», pure spirits who created MEST (matter, energy, space, and time), largely for their own pleasure. Unfortunately, incarnating and reincarnating in human bodies, the thetans came to forget that they had created the world, and to believe that they were the effect rather than the cause of physical universe Two Parts of the Mind The analytical mind observes and stores data, and uses them to take decisions and promote survival. The reactive mind records mental images at times of unconsciousness, incidents, or pain, and stores these images as «engrams». They are awakened and reactivated when similar circumstances occur, creating all sort of problems The ARC Triangle Affinity is the positive emotional relationship we establish with others. Reality is the agreement we reach with others about how things are. Through communication, we construct and share reality and are able to generate affinity L.
