COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

SWISH Basketball

The seven-week summer drop-in program wrapped up on August 13th with a record attendance of 30 youth per Saturday. SWISH has been running since 2012 in Parking Lot E. Every Saturday, youth from the area attend the drop-in basketball venue, staffed by community and Bison basketball members, to hone their skills and participate in 3-on-3 games and monthly tournaments. This year, SWISH hired a staff person from the Ndinawe Youth Resource Centre who worked to bring more Indigenous youth to the program. Thank you to Crystal from Ndinewa! SWISH is largely funded through private donations, fundraising, partnerships with Basketball Manitoba, City of Winnipeg, UM Parking Services, Physical Plant, Joe Doupe gymnasium and Colleges of Medicine and Dentistry.

BEN SALINS, PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT STUDENT AND VOLUNTEER FACILITATOR AT OPASKWAYAK CREE NATION, JULY 2016 Mini-U in the Community

Bison Children’s Program staff attended Wellington each day to provide indoor and outdoor activities to an enthusiastic group of children during the week of August 8-12th. Parents were appreciative that the program was offered directly in the neighbourhood. Thanks to Wellington School and Winnipeg School Division for providing us with an excellent space for kids and families!

Biomedical Youth Camps

The Winnipeg BYP camp took place from July 18-22 at the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences. One hundred and fifty participants and 50 volunteers made this year’s camp another huge success. Students took part in various health science activities such as microscopy, dentistry, medicine, pharmacy and the hugely popular visit to the Clinical Simulation Lab. As in the past, The Alan Klass Memorial OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY STUDENTS, JESSICA RAMOS AND EMILY SMITH WITH STUDENTS IN MOSAKAHIKEN CREE NATION Program for Health collaborated with ACCESS Programs and Frontier School Division to bring fifteen northern students to the one-week camp. Students came from Grand Rapids, The Pas, Thompson, Nelson House and many others.

The second part of the BYP camps was held in the north for Indigenous students. This year, Karen Cook, Project
