Marcelo arrived from the University of Toronto, where he was a Research Scientist at the Centre for Research on Inner DR. STEPHEN MOSES MD, MPH City Health, in the Li Ka Shing Knowledge DEPARTMENT HEAD Institute, St. Michael's Hospital, and Assistant Professor at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto. He currently holds a CIHR New Investigator Award and a CIHR grant, and has published widely in areas related to the social determinants of health, maternal and child health, reproductive and perinatal epidemiology, immigrant health and international health. We again this year had a large incoming class of graduate students in the BSc, PhD and MPH programs, as well as a large incoming class of undergraduate students in the Bachelor of Human Ecology (Family Social Sciences) and Bachelor of Health Studies programs. So plenty of teaching to go around. Congratulations to the large number of MPH, MSc, BHEcol and BHSt students who have recently graduated. As these graduates, and the long list below of awards, research grants, research publications and presentations indicate, the Department continues to be active and vibrant as we face the challenges ahead. Stephen Moses, MD, MPH Head of the Department SEPT-OCT 2016 // NO. 60 ANNOUNCEMENTS & AWARDS Dr. Alan Katz, 2016 Manitoba College of Family Physicians Award of Excellence. Dr. Joseph Kaufert, BA (Hons)(Minnesota), MA, PhD (Northwestern), awarded Professor Emerritus title at a ceremony on September 28, 2016. Dr. Kaufert joined the University of Manitoba in 1976. He was co-developer of the PhD and MSc graduate programs in CHS and directed undergraduate curriculum for more than three decades. Dr. Kaufert retired in December 2015, but remains actively involved in department, university and community activities. On October 6th, in Toronto Dr. Deborah McPhail was honoured as one of the recipients of the Body Confidence Canada Awards. These awards celebrate champions of body confidence, body positivity, and body diversity in Canada. Dr. McPhail was nominated for the teaching that she does in the Population Health course and her work with graduate students, addressing topics such as critical obesity, healthy sexuality and LGBTTQ* health. JAVIER MIGNONE From May 30th to June 3rd of 2016 we successfully held worked in teams to develop evaluation plans for six of the sixth Summer Institute on Program Evaluation. the agencies.
