WALTER COLLEY.CO We have an exciting year ahead as we celebrate Jeff Tyzik’s 20th season as PHOTO BY our Principal Pops Conductor, and travel to New York’s Carnegie Hall in May for a special performance of Howard Hanson’s opera Merry Mount with singers from the Eastman School of Music, as part of the 2014 Spring For Music Festival. You’ll have the unique opportunity to experience phenomenal conductors from all over the world, starting with Jun Märkl, who leads the RPO in Mahler’s First Symphony on Opening Weekend (Sept. 26 & 28). Guest conductor Bernhard Gueller joins us for Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra (Oct. 17 & 19), and Larry Rachleff returns for Copland’s Appalachian Spring (Oct. 24 & 26). You also will hear top-notch soloists, including the acclaimed violinist Jennifer Koh performing Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E Minor (Sept. 26 & 28); award-winning pianist Jonathan Biss in Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1 (Oct. 17 & 19); and our own Concertmaster Juliana Athayde (Oct. 24 & 26), who takes her turn in the spotlight for Piazzolla’s Four Seasons of Buenos Aires. This season, we are launching two new three-concert series on Sunday afternoons at Hochstein: one with Michael Butterman exploring the fusion of music and other art forms, and the other featuring music of the Baroque era. The first Musical Connections concert on Oct. 6 focuses on the intersection of music and visual art, including excerpts from Jeff Tyzik’s Images: Musical Impressions of an Art Museum. And the fun and engaging OrKIDStra Series for children and families kicks off with Orchestra Games (Oct. 13), exploring the distinctive personalities of various orchestral instruments. This is just one component of the RPO’s comprehensive range of education programs designed to introduce young people to the magic of orchestral music. Rochester, N.Y. The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra today announced that they will be presenting an outdoor series of concerts beginning June 3 and running through September 5th. With 37 concerts, this is the most ambitious and extensive summer season that the orchestra has ever produced. The series begins with four concerts at Perinton Center Stage Amphitheater at the Perinton Recreational Center. On Thursday, June 3rd and Friday, June 4th Summer Serenade, a program featuring Mozart, Tchaikovsky and Beethoven will be conducted by Music Director Designate Andreas Delfs. This will be the first live concert with an audience that the orchestra will have performed in nearly a year and a half and will be an unforgettably moving experience for musicians and audiences alike. This will be followed on Thursday, June 10th and Friday, June 11th with Summer Suites, a program featuring Mozart, Grieg and Dvořák, also at Perinton Center Stage Amphitheater and conducted by Maestro Delfs. Celebración Sinfónica, conducted by Enrico Lopez-Yañez on Thursday, June 17th and Friday, June 18th, features music from Piazzolla, Romero, Ponce, and more and celebrates the music of South and Central America. Lopez-Yanez returns for Cinematic Strings on Thursday, June 24th and Friday, June 25th and a program featuring music from Game of Thrones, Psycho, The Mission, and more.

    RUSSIAN, SOVIET & POST-SOVIET CONCERTOS A Discography of CDs and LPs Prepared by Michael Herman Sergei Rachmaninov (1873-1943) Born at Oneg, Novgorod Region. He had piano lessons from an early age but his serious training in composition began at the Moscow Conservatory where he studied counterpoint with Sergei Taneyev and harmony with Anton Arensky. He began to compose and for the rest of his life divided his musical time between composing, conducting and piano playing gaining great fame in all three. After leaving Russia permanently in 1917, the need to make a living made his role as a piano virtuoso predominant. His 4 Piano Concertos, Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini and substantial solo piano works make him one of the world's most-performed composers. However, he also composed operas and liturgical choral works as well as other pieces for orchestra, chamber groups and voice.     SUMMER 2007 A MAGAZINE FOR ALUMNI AND FRIENDS OF THE EASTMAN SCHOOL OF MUSIC FROM THE EDITOR “Beautiful problems” When I am putting together the many different items that make up an issue of Eastman Notes, I sometimes ask myself if there is a through-line (or if you prefer a musical term, a Leitmotif) that truly ties them together, and makes the maga- zine something more than an Eastman miscellany. When I listened to the distinguished composer Mario Davidovsky, who vis- ited Eastman this spring as the composition department’s fi rst Howard Hanson Composer-in-Residence, I took copious notes, of course. In going over them be- fore writing my article on the event, I was struck by a scribbled phrase: beauti- ful problems. This was Davidovsky’s own description of his compositions, but he NOTES seemed to be referring to the process and challenge of composing a piece, not the fi nished work. I can easily see why a composer, whose approach to his work Volume 25, Number 2 is both craftsmanlike and intuitive, might see his job in this light. Summer 2007 The phrase stayed with me long after the Davidovsky piece was written (see page 20). It considers what they have commissioned, what performed, the context in which the music has been programmed, and who was involved. The orchestras are the three which are established on a permanent basis and give regular subscription series in Scotland: the BBC Scottish Symphony, Royal Scottish National, and Scottish Chamber Orchestras. The study contributes to the debate around classical music programming of new music, taking these orchestras as examples. It asks how in practice some of those responsible for programming in the period from 1945 to 2015 have reconciled conflicting expectations and desires.

A late starter in music, his professional training in music began with a theory class in 1861 with Nikolay Zaremba. He entered the Russian Musical Society's recently opened new music school, The St. Petersburg Conservatory. There he studied theory, composition, the piano, flute and organ and his most significant teacher was Anton Rubinstein.
