Again the auto intensity control mechanism has been applied by the help of a microcontroller to control the light intensity of the luminaries as per the requirement. Hence the loss of energy due to unnecessary glow of the street lights can be avoided. In addition, in Sub-Saharan Africa, around 75 million people lived with an unreliable grid. This thesis intends to contribute positively to the development of these regions through the introduction of street lighting systems in these low income communities. Two products were developed: a stand-alone street light system (suitable for off-grid population) and a grid connected system (to overcome the problem of grid unreliability). Both systems were developed according to European Street Lighting Standards through the use of DIAlux software. The "worst month" method was used to size the stand-alone system. For grid connected systems, a daily failure of 3 hours was considered. All the components used in both systems are available in the Portuguese market. Regarding stand-alone system a prototype has been tested since late July at Faculdade de Ciências, Universidade de Lisboa. Additionally, a performance analysis across the African continent was done. -

Arowosere, F.O., Akintade, S.A Abstract: The solar energy is tapped and converted directly in to electricity by the solar panel (photovoltaic cell) which is being used to power a solar street light. The battery stores the excess solar energy during the day which the charge controller prevents the battery from overcharging and also charges the battery.This project unveils the design and construction of a solar energy street light system with dust to dawn operation with the aid of tight dependent resistor (LDR). The basic system components includea50watt solar panel, 100Ah solar battery, 12 volt charge controller, 15watt energy saving bulb 3.5meter pole and interconnecting cables. However, the result obtained shows that the charge controller served a dual purpose in channeling electricity (DC) from the photovoltaic module to both the battery and DC electric load. The charge controller also monitoring the system performance and provide system protection. Street lighting technology comparison Street lighting today Today, street lighting commonly uses high-intensity discharge lamps, often HPS high pressure sodium lamps . Such lamps provide the greatest amount of photopic illumination for the least consumption of electricity. However when scotopic/photopic light calculations are used, it can been seen how inappropriate HPS lamps are for night lighting. White light sources have been sho wn to doub le driver peripheral vision and increase driver brake reaction time at least 25%. When S/P light calculations are used, HPS lamp performance needs to be reduced by a minimum value of 75%. A study comparing metal halide and high-pressure sodium lamps showed that at equal photopic light levels, a street scene illuminated at night by a metal halide lighting system was reliably seen as brighter and safer than the same scene illuminate d by a high pressure sodium system. New street lighting technologies, such as induction or LED lights, emit a white light that provides high levels of scotopic lumens allowing street lights with lower wattages and lower photopic lumens to replace existing street lights .
