Cape May is one of the most productive migration hotspots in North America. Kurt Schwarz has been a serious birder since 1994. He is the MOS Conservation Chair and former President of Howard County Bird Club.

We will walk down the Black Marsh trail to the Bay, looking for late ducks and early migrants, such as Hooded Mergansers and Little Blue Herons as well as the increasingly rare Rusty Blackbird. Afterwards, we will head down to the stone pier to check for other interesting residents and visitors. The walk is free, but there is a $3 charge to enter the park. APRIL 28 (Sat) 7:00 am/9:00 am Smith Island. All-day memory making trip to see waders and other migrants on the island, plus water birds during boat rides. Bring lunch, snacks, beverages and extra cash. The general store on the island might be open, offering great sandwiches, drinks and snacks, cash only. Rental bikes and golf carts available on the island. Car pool from Nursery Rd Park & Ride, leaving 7am sharp or meet at the Point Lookout boat dock at 9am. The boat leaves 930am sharp, arrives at the island about 11am. As a precaution, motion sickness medicine is advised (take it an hour before the boat ride). This trip requires RSVP by Wed Apr 25 and $40-$50 per person (depending on attendance), paid when boarding. NO CHECKS OR CREDIT CARDS. Limited to 40 passengers. Tonight: Marcia Watson on ”From Mountains to Saltmarsh: Rediscovering the MOS Sanctuaries.” The Maryland Ornithological Society owns ten sanctuaries, totaling about 2,700 acres, spanning the state from Garrett County in the west to Somerset County on the lower Eastern Shore. All the sanctuaries are open to the public every day of the year, at no charge, and represent a microcosm of the habitats for birds in Maryland. Many people are aware of the Carey Run and Irish Grove Sanctuaries, where work-days are held each year, but the other sanctuaries are seldom visited. Marcia Watson will present illustrated profiles of the sanctuaries, discussing the birds and habitats found in each one. Marcia Watson is a long-time member of MOS. She was a founding member of the Cecil Bird Club, and served that chapter as president and webmaster. She now lives with her husband Gene Scarpulla in Bowie and is Vice-President and webmaster of the Patuxent Bird Club.

MAY 5 (Sat) 7:30 am Susquehanna State Park Rock Run Area. Meet at the lot at the end of Rock Run Rd., next to the old mill building. Trip to river in Harford County for resident Cerulean and Prothonotary Warblers and a collection of spring migrants. This is one of the best spring warbler watching sites in Maryland; 18 to 24 warbler species possible in a single day. Bring a picnic lunch for the wrap-up of what could be an excellent morning of birding. Optional extension after lunch to Swan Harbor Farm Park for shorebirds, herons, rails and bitterns. DIRECTIONS TO MEETING PLACES in Alphabetical Order Cox’s Point Park. From Baltimore Beltway I-695, take exit 38B for MD-150/Eastern Blvd. east. Go across the bridge and turn right onto Virginia Ave. Turn right onto Riverside Dr., which takes you into the park. Cromwell Valley Park. From Baltimore Beltway I-695 inner loop (eastbound) take Exit 29A Cromwell Bridge Road. At end of entrance ramp, turn left (north) onto Cromwell Bridge Road. From Beltway outer loop (westbound) take Exit 29 ramp down to Cromwell Bridge Road, turn left (north). Once on Cromwell, continue 1.4 miles beyond the light, turn left at the “Willow Grove Farm” entrance. Follow entrance road, cross a small bridge, and park in lot on left. Cylburn. From Baltimore Beltway I-695, go south on I-83 Jones Falls Expressway. Take Northern Parkway Exit west (right). Go about ½ mile up hill to traffic light, turn left on . Go about ¼ mile, just past first road intersection, and turn left through stone gate entrance into Cylburn Arboretum grounds. Follow the drive to circle in front of the Vollmer Center building. Go most of the way around the circle to enter the parking area. . For Cylburn Self-guided walks, meet in the parking lot. . For Covered Dish Dinner, drop off passengers, food or other items in front of the Vollmer Center building, then continue around circle to park in the lot. . For lectures at the Greenhouse classroom, follow signs at back end of parking lot (i.e., from that point, turn right, then immediately turn right again, go up short hill to small parking lot on top of the hill). The building beside the lot has a side entrance door. Go in and left, walk through a short hallway, and through a door at the end into the lecture room.

Days Cove. From I-695 Baltimore Beltway northeast side of town, take exit 35 and go 6.8 miles north on US-40 Pulaski Highway (2.7 miles north of White Marsh Blvd, 1/4 mile north of Allender Road), right onto Days Cove Road. Drive to end, past the refuse center and the split for the reclamation center, keep left and travel down the gravel road. There is a "Days Cove Environmental Education Center" sign out front.

Druid Hill Park. From I-83 take Exit 7 toward Druid Park/Lake Drive. Keep left at the fork and merge onto W. 28th St. Turn left on Sisson St., then left onto Wyman Park Drive. Wyman Park turns slightly right and becomes East Drive. Turn right into parking lot for Baltimore City Recreation and Parks building, 3001 East Drive. Ft. McHenry. From I-95, take Hanover Street Exit 55 (McComas Street) east (last exit before tunnel eastbound, first after tunnel westbound), north (left) on Key Highway which turns west, first left Lawrence Street, left (east) on Fort Avenue and continue east to the entrance gate into Fort McHenry. From the JFX, I-83, south to St Paul Street exit, south on St Paul until it becomes Light Street, then left (east) onto Fort Avenue, continue to end and gate as above. Park outside the main entrance gate at the lot on left hand side (Wallace Street) and meet at the gate.

Ft. Smallwood Park. From Baltimore Beltway I-695, take exit 2 for MD-10 south toward Severna Park. After 6 miles keep left to continue onto MD-100 east, follow signs for Gibson Island. Use the left two lanes to turn left onto MD-607 north/Magothy Bridge Rd. Turn right onto Ft. Smallwood Rd./State Highway 173, which in 3 miles takes you into the park. Hawkwatch is on the east side of the park, near a large pond.

Gwynns Falls/Leakin Park. From Baltimore Beltway I-695, take Exit 16 Route I-70 towards Baltimore to end – just before the very end, take the ramp on the right, which will loop around onto Security Boulevard. Take a right at the first light onto Forest Park, then right onto Franklintown Road. Go about 1.4 miles. The parking lot entrance will be on your left.

Irvine Nature Center, 11201 Garrison Forest Rd., Owings Mills. From Beltway I-695 take Exit 20 for Reisterstown Rd, MD-140 north toward Garrison. Turn right onto Greenspring Valley Rd. Turn left onto Garrison Forest Rd. and go 2.1 miles. Driveway to Irvine is on the right.

Jerusalem Mill area, Gunpowder Falls SP. From Baltimore Beltway I-695, head north on US-1 N/Belair Rd. After 7 miles take slight right on Jerusalem Rd. Continue on Jerusalem Rd. for 2 miles to parking lot on the left.

Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary, Anne Arundel. From Baltimore Beltway I-695, keep left to take exit 4/I-97 toward Annapolis/Bay Bridge. After 9.8 miles on I-97 take exit 7 to MD-3 south. Continue onto US-302 south. After 8 miles use the second from left lane to turn left onto Village Drive west. Turn right onto Old Crain Highway and continue onto Marlboro Pike. Turn right onto Green Landing Rd. for .3 miles. Turn left to merge onto Md-4 south. Turn right onto Plummer Lane then right onto Wrighton Rd. Turn left into Jug Bay Entrance Rd.

Lake Roland Park. Walks begin at the head of the Boardwalk, at the Light Rail parking lot. From Beltway north of town, take Jones Falls Expressway I-83 south to Northern Pkwy exit, and go east, (left) to next traffic light, Falls Road. Go left (north) on Falls Road. After third light (Lake Ave) drive past Pepe’s, and turn right just before the bridge, at sign to Light Rail parking. Follow curve left and go straight over a small bridge, following signs to Light Rail Parking. As you enter the parking lot, go right and drive to the far end of the lot, and park near the boardwalk entrance. Marshy Point Nature Center. From Baltimore Beltway I-695, take Exit 36, Route 702. Take 2nd exit, Chase/Eastern Boulevard, Route 150 east. Go 6 miles. Turn right at Marshy Point sign. Go 1/2 mile, turn left into Nature Center parking lot.

North Point State Park. From Baltimore Beltway take Exit 42, North Point Boulevard and turn right toward Sparrows Point. Make an immediate left onto Bethlehem Road, and keep right onto North Point Road. Go through the town of Edgemere and keep going, past Millers Island Road, until you see the signs for North Point State Park on the left. Go in the entrance, parking will be on left after toll kiosk ($3 per car).

Nursery Rd/Hammonds Ferry Rd Park and Ride. From Baltimore Beltway I-695 outer loop (southbound), take Exit 8B (NOT 8A), ramp leads to parking lot across Hammonds Ferry Road. From Beltway inner loop (northbound), take Exit 8 ramp, right onto Fairview, turn right onto Nursery Road, right onto Hammonds Ferry Road, then left at next light into Park-n-Ride lot.

Oregon Ridge Park. From Beltway take I-83 North to Exit 20B (Shawan Road West). Follow Shawan Road to the first light, Beaver Dam Road, and turn left. Immediately after making the left onto Beaver Dam Road, there will be a fork in the road. Take the right fork. Follow the driveway up to the parking lot, and meet at the Nature Center, located a short walk up the rest of the driveway, at the top of the hill.

Patterson Park. From , drive east on Pratt Street, go left onto South Patterson Park Avenue and park on this street in the first or second block. Meet at the White House, just inside the west edge of park at intersection of South Patterson Park Avenue and Lombard Street.

Patuxent North Tract. From Baltimore, take I-295 south Baltimore-Washington Parkway and take the MD Route 198 exit toward Fort Meade/Laurel. Turn left on to Route 198 heading East and travel about 2 miles. Then turn right onto Bald Eagle Drive (at the ball fields) and travel 1 mile to the North Tract Visitor Contact Station.

Phoenix Pond. From the Baltimore Beltway, take I-83 North. Get off at exit 20 Shawan Road and go east. At end, turn right onto York Road, then left onto Ashland Road (first light). Go 1.2 miles, bearing left to stay on Ashland Road. Ashland Road becomes Paper Mill Road where the well-marked NCR trail crosses the road. Continue another mile, cross a bridge, then in another mile watch for Phoenix Road on your left. Turn north onto Phoenix Road and go another 2 miles, just past Carroll Road on your right, to the pond on your right and parking lot on your left.

Soldiers Delight. From I-695 Beltway take Exit 18 Liberty Rd. west 4 miles. Bear right onto Deer Park Rd. just before traffic light and water tower. Go approximately 2 miles and park at Overlook parking lot, on your left.

Susquehanna State Park, Rock Run area. From I-695 Baltimore Beltway, take exit 33 for I-95 north toward New York. Take exit 89 and turn left onto MD-155 west. Turn right onto N. Earlton Rd. Ext, then slight right onto Webster Lapidum Rd. For .1 miles. Take a slight right onto Rock Run Rd. and park at lot on right at the bottom of the hill near the river.
