THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY SCHREYER HONORS COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF LABOR AND EMPLOYMENT RELATIONS PLAYERS IN POWER: A HISTORICAL REVIEW OF CONTRACTUALLY BARGAINED AGREEMENTS IN THE NBA INTO THE MODERN AGE AND THEIR LIMITATIONS ERIC PHYTHYON SPRING 2020 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for baccalaureate degrees in Political Science and Labor and Employment Relations with honors in Labor and Employment Relations Reviewed and approved* by the following: Robert Boland J.D, Adjunct Faculty Labor & Employment Relations, Penn State Law Thesis Advisor Jean Marie Philips Professor of Human Resources Management, Labor and Employment Relations Honors Advisor * Electronic approvals are on file. ii ABSTRACT: This paper analyzes the current bargaining situation between the National Basketball Association (NBA), and the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) and the changes that have occurred in their bargaining relationship over previous contractually bargained agreements, with specific attention paid to historically significant court cases that molded the league to its current form. The ultimate decision maker for the NBA is the Commissioner, Adam Silver, whose job is to represent the interests of the league and more specifically the team owners, while the ultimate decision maker for the players at the bargaining table is the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA), currently led by Michele Roberts. In the current system of negotiations, the NBA and the NBPA meet to negotiate and make changes to their collective bargaining agreement as it comes close to expiration. This paper will examine the 1976 ABA- NBA merger, and the resulting impact that the joining of these two leagues has had. This paper will utilize language from the current collective bargaining agreement, as well as language from previous iterations agreed upon by both the NBA and NBPA, as well information from other professional sports leagues agreements and accounts from relevant parties involved. -

Claremont McKenna College Salary Inequality in the NBA: Changing Returns to Skill or Wider Skill Distributions? submitted to Professor Ricardo Fernholz by Jonah F. Breslow for Senior Thesis Spring 2017 April 24, 2017 Abstract In this paper, I examine trends in salary inequality from the 1985-86 NBA season to the 2015-16 NBA season. Income and wealth inequality have been extremely important issues recently, which motivated me to analyze inequality in the NBA. I investigated if salary inequality trends in the NBA can be explained by either returns to skill or widening skill distributions. I used Pareto exponents to measure inequality levels and tested to see if the levels changed over the sample. Then, I estimated league-wide returns to skill. I found that returns to skill have not significantly changed, but variance in skill has increased. This result explained some of the variation in salary distributions. This could potentially influence future Collective Bargaining Agreements insofar as it provides an explanation for widening NBA salary distributions as opposed to a judgement whether greater levels of inequality is either good or bad for the NBA. -

An Analysis of Sports Agent Regulation in Intercollegiate Athletics: a Call for Cooperation
Journal of Legal Aspects of Sport, 2014, 24, 62-77 Official Journal of SRLA http://dx.doi.org/10.1123/jlas.2014-0004 www.JLAS-Journal.com © 2014 Sport and Recreation Law Association ORIGINAL RESEARCH An Analysis of Sports Agent Regulation in Intercollegiate Athletics: A Call for Cooperation Ross Viltz, Chad Seifried, and Jeremy Foreman The purpose of this article is to review the current environment associated with agents, student-athletes and the other parties involved with the organization and management of intercollegiate sport and to discuss how these groups can better work together at Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) institutions. Within, a total of 29 (23.2%) of the 125 Division-1 FBS universities responded to our request to provide institutional literature on their agent policies and Agent Days. Results from this request and analysis of documents show some effort to educate student-athletes about sport agents and to create an ethical environment but more could be done. Next, this work sought to review the realities/outcomes of unethical agent and student-athlete relationships and explain the policies and practices of the NCAA as well as federal and state laws regarding agent and student-athlete interaction. Finally, this work offers a variety of suggestions/recommendations to better protect student-athletes and institutions. According to the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA; 2006), there are more than 700 registered agents allowed to work for the National Football League (NFL). Bechta (2009) explained that after the final roster cuts nearly 400 of these agents will have no clients on an NFL roster and therefore no income to pay off their large expenses. -

Comparison of the Current Situation of China and the United States Sports Brokerage Industry
2020 3rd International Conference on Economic Management and Green Development (ICEMGD 2020) Comparison of the Current Situation of China and the United States Sports Brokerage Industry Song Shuang1, a, * 1China Basketball College, Beijing Sport University, Xinxi Rd,No.48, Beijing, China [email protected] *corresponding author Keywords: sports brokerage industry, China-US comparison, athlete brokerage, policy suggestion Abstract: By comparing the current status of the development of sports brokerage in China and the United States, this paper displays the common issues, addresses the existed short comes of China’s sports brokerage, and gives some advices. This paper mainly compares three aspects, the industry itself, athlete brokers, and relevant commercial events. From the perspective of the industry itself, the Chinese sports brokerage industry has relatively low requirements on the education qualifications of employees, training attaches importance to theory rather than practice, and the qualification certification mechanism is not yet complete. In terms of policies and laws, China has not yet made national unified legislation on sports brokerage. As for the scope of business, the business content only stays on some of the most basic and primitive brokerage forms and does not connect well with other industries. From the perspective of athlete brokerage, the transfer of Chinese players is still government-led and the market is less liquid. The professionalization of athletes under the national system is not complete. Athletes develop their own intangible assets through the brokerage industry, which often conflicts with the interests of the overall economic development of their units. From the perspective of commercial events, the current number of commercial events in China is increasing, and the events involved are more extensive, but the number of events operated through the domestic brokerage industry is still small. -

Weekly Notes 072817
MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 BLACKMON WORKING TOWARD HISTORIC SEASON On Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, Colorado Rockies All-Star outfi elder Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and his 24th home run of the season. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31). -
This Is Cowboy Basketball
This is Cowboy Basketball " What it means to me to put on a Cowboy uniform and play in the Arena-Auditorium is kind of indescribable. To play at the only Division I university in the entire state, and not only that but to play at the same place both of my parents played, is amazing. I get goose bumps just walking into the Arena-Auditorium for practice, not even a game. I can't tell you how great I feel about putting on the Brown and Gold and having the opportunity to be a Cowboy. It is truly amazing and I thank God everyday that I get to be a part of something bigger than me."” Adam Waddell, Cody, Wyo. Sophomore Center The 1943 NCAA Champion Wyoming Cowboys. WINNING TRADITION owboy Basketball tradition is a rich one, including an NCAA National Championship team, a former coach who is WINNING a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame, an All-American who is credited with one of the greatest innovations in C the history of the game and one of the most memorable players in NCAA history. In 1943, the University of Wyoming was led to the NCAA Championship by legendary coach Everett Shelton. Shelton’s 1943 Cowboy squad defeated Georgetown in the NCAA Championship game in Madison Square Garden. Two nights later, also in Madison Square Garden, the Cowboys earned the right to call themselves undisputed National Champions as they defeated that year’s NIT Champion, St. John’s University, in a game benefi tting the Red Cross. In 1982, Coach Shelton’s memory was immortalized with the highest honor in basketball — induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfi eld, Mass. -
