September Martin’s Message 2018 September: the ‘harvest month’ of new beginnings... September signals autumn’s arrival, with ‘mists and mellow fruitfulness’ to enjoy. It is so-named because it was the seventh month of the 10-month Roman calendar (septem is ‘seven’ in Latin, with ‘octo’, ‘novem’ and ‘decem’ continuing the sequence). In many ancient cultures its name equated to ‘harvest month’, underlining its importance in the agricultural year. With 2018 being such a difficult year for farmers and growers our Harvest Thanksgivings this autumn will be even more heartfelt than usual.

For many people, especially in school and college life, September heralds a new start – whilst in our churches and communities it marks the beginning of a busy final few months of the year.

At St Mary’s, beginning from September, the first Sunday will feature a monthly Baptism Service, at 12:00. We hope this will enable us to increase the number of baptisms taking place and thereby help bring new families in to St Mary’s. It would be greatly appreciated if any members of the 10am congregation were willing occasionally to stay on for this short service, to show our support to our baptism families.

At the start of next year, we plan to introduce a weekly toddlers’ service, to help little ones and their parents or carers to feel comfortable in church. This would be another stepping-stone for people new to our church community.

Meanwhile, on Sunday 2nd we will be gathering at Downholme church for a United Benefice Songs of Praise service, at 3pm – to be followed by a Bring and Share tea. Please join us as our churches come together for worship and fellowship.

On Sunday 9th at St Mary’s we will be celebrating our Patronal Festival. 8th September is when the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary is commemorated, so our 10am service on the nearest Sunday will be a celebration of Mary’s place in our journey of faith. At St Michael’s, Downholme the Patronal Festival will be celebrated on Sunday 23rd, at 9:30am.

Richmond’s ancient First Fruits Ceremony will be taking place outside Holy Trinity church on Saturday 15th, at 10:30am. The annual Civic Service will be on the following day, Sunday 16th at 10am, at St Mary’s. This service will have a ‘first fruits’ – a Lammastide – flavour, and will be a great occasion for the Town and Parish Church to come together as we welcome the Mayor’s guests

from neighbouring communities.

The Harvest theme continues with evening celebrations at Downholme and Marske on Friday 28th September and Friday 19th October respectively, and an All Age Harvest Festival at St Mary’s on Sunday 7th October, at 10am. The latter service will feature the excellent band from SFX School.

Other SFX School students have been working on ideas to refresh the ‘children’s corner’ in St Mary’s. So watch this space for developments! This will be another way for us to help young families feel comfortable when joining us.

Attracting more young families to St Mary’s is one of the challenges detailed in the Brochure prepared for the recent Vacancy. On 3rd November, the Richmond with Hudswell PCC will be gathering for the Vision Day I mentioned in my June Message; the day will be facilitated by Bishop Helen-Ann. Over the next few weeks, do please take another look at the Brochure and let any member of the PCC know what you feel our priorities should be as we set a new vision – a new beginning – for our Benefice.

A warm welcome to Sian! Sian Lawton is married to Chris Lawton, Rector of the Lower Wensleydale Benefice, and is herself training for ordination at St Mellitus College in Liverpool. September is the beginning of the second and final year of her course, which involves spending Sundays and two days per week in a parish placement.

Sian’s placement in her first year was at Brompton on Swale. For this year she will be joining our Benefice and her first Sunday with us will be 9th September.

I am sure we will all give Sian a warm welcome – and be open to learn from her as she learns from us.

FUN-KEY CHURCH @ ST MARY’S RICHMOND One of the joys of Fun-Key Church is its informality and welcome and it was wonderful to be able to welcome many new faces to Fun-Key Church at the end of July when Georgia was baptised. It was such a lovely warm service and Scott and I were really privileged to be asked to be Georgia’s godparent. Alastair, James and Andrew took up the special role of godbrothers adding to the real family feel of the service. As well as the baptism there were plenty of crafts and activities and huge amounts of cake - including a very special unicorn cake - there can be few baptisms where unicorn cake is eaten and where cat ears are worn!

We have a break in August but are VERY excited that Bishop Nick Baines will join us for our September Fun-Key Church service. That will be at 4pm on Sunday 30th September. Do come and meet Bishop Nick and enjoy all that Fun- Key Church has to offer.

We couldn’t do Fun-Key Church without the very dedicated help of planners before the service and people on the day and of course the Mothers Union who make tea, coffee and biscuits during every service.

Find us on the church website, find us on Facebook, or read our blog at: http://funkeychurchatstmarysrichmond.wordpress.com

MOTHERS’ UNION Well what a lovely long hot summer we have had. June seems a long time ago but at our June meeting we celebrated three birthdays with strawberry cream scones and lemon drizzle cake; Martin was our speaker. Martin was born in South Korea. His father was a missionary priest with USPG and his mother a midwife; they had met in Korea and were married at Seoul Cathedral. Martin’s father had spent three years learning to speak Korean but after Martin was born his parents thought it best to return. They made their home at Kirby Hill Vicarage where two years later Martin’s brother Stephen was born! The family left Kirby Hill on Martins seventh birthday and headed to a parish in Berkshire. In his teenage years Martin felt called to the ministry but ignored it and studied engineering at Bradford University. In 1996 Martin’s father died which again concentrated his mind on the priesthood. Before entering theological college he decided to take a year out and went travelling in Africa. He did his training at Cuddesdon near Oxford, and started his four year curacy at Oatlands in Surrey – where fifty years previously his father was also Curate. T’was meant to be! From there Martin’s first parish was in Tiptree, Essex. The Lord Chancellor was patron so Martin had been interviewed at 10 Downing Street! Martin served six years before moving to Hersham in Surrey, were he served a further seven years – before meeting Scott cycling down Reeth Road! Whoever would have thought that a young boy leaving Kirby Hill Vicarage would fifty years later be back as Rector of St. Mary’s, Richmond but how delighted we are that he is here. Martin assured us that he hopes to give his best years to this Benefice and he is certainly not here to wind down! He is full of beans and hoping we are on the journey with him: we most certainly are! Thank you Martin for such an interesting and informative talk.

We also in June had an wonderful afternoon with Reeth Brass Band followed by Afternoon Tea which made an amazing amount of money enabling us to help a lot of needy causes involving children and families both locally and further afield, the very essence of Mothers Union.

In July we welcomed Judith Clarke who spoke of the work of Marrick Priory which as many of you will know is an educational outdoor centre near Reeth in Swaledale. It is open to all, schools and groups of all faiths and none. A group of vulnerable women from inner city Leeds had visited for 24 hours respite and also has been a respite for refugee families. This facility is available to all people. Judith wears “two hats” as well as been chairman of the Friends of Marrick Priory which provides amongst other things bedding waterproofs wellies etc, she is also on the board of Trustees which are hoping to develop Marrick Priory even further with some new building works. Of course this all takes money so any donations or fundraising would be most gratefully received. Again we ended our meeting with scones and cake! In August we attended the midday prayers for Mary Sumner Day at the Cathedral followed by a lovely lunch and wander round Ripon. Our next meeting is at Susan’s home 14 Pilmoor Close at 2pm on Tuesday 25th September to which all are welcome - member or not!

RIBBON LINK TO MARK WORLD WAR CENTENARY 2018 marks the centenary anniversary of the end of the First World War, and The Green Howards Museum is running an ambitious project which will, quite literally, link and Richmond with a ‘Ribbon of Remembrance’. The museum team are asking local people to submit images of, and information about, those involved in and affected by the events of 1914 to 1918. This ever-growing catalogue of portraits and biographies is already available to view on the museum’s website. It gets longer as stories and images are added, but the museum team needs lots more contributions to be able to create an actual ribbon route in November.

“In addition to images of those who served, we want to include pictures of civilians; shopkeepers, traders, farmers, teachers, those at home working, those who lived on, those who grieved, and those who dealt with the aftermath of war,” says Ribbon Co-ordinator, Carl Watts. “It’s also perhaps an opportunity to look at the past history of local buildings, maybe even your own home, and remind ourselves of the part they played in the war, maybe as hospitals or billets.”

Taking Richmond as an example, the regimental Depot was based in what’s now The Garden Village residential area. Richmond Castle housed prisoners who, for religious or political reasons, refused to take up arms or work for the war effort. Thousands of troops passed through Richmond Station, and it was just over a century ago that Catterick Camp was created, on a site first suggested by Robert Baden-Powell in 1908. It housed up to 42,000 men and, by the end of the First World War, 5000 POW. The first road from Catterick Camp to Richmond, now Rimington Avenue and Richmond Road, was created by German prisoners in 1917.

The images and information submitted to the online Ribbon of Remembrance will be used to create a physical display on the route between Richmond and Catterick Garrison, along which people can walk during the weekend of Remembrance Day in November.

Make your contribution at greenhowards.org.uk, pop into the museum to find out how we can help you get started, or call 01748 826561 for further information.

The Ribbon of Remembrance project has been made possible with support from The Armed Forces Covenant Community Fund. The museum is a member of the Imperial War Museum’s Centenary Partnership and is hosting events throughout the year to mark the centenary anniversary of the end of the First World War.

PASTORAL CARE The St Mary's Church community wishes to do all we can to support, listen and love all in our parish whether members of our church or not. The Pastoral Team at St Mary's have established a Prayer Circle at St Mary’s. If you have something which you would appreciate prayer for, whether for yourself or for someone you care about, we would be privileged to pray about it. No prayer request is ever too small or trivial. Whatever you wish to share, in confidence, we will support you in prayer. To ask for prayer you can either telephone, email or text Rev Martin on 821241, [email protected] or 07762 440094; or contact Gillian Lunn on 07592016476 or [email protected] and she will place your prayer in the circle. Please be assured your requests are confidential. To be a praying member of the circle or a member of the Pastoral Team, please speak to Rev Martin or Gillian. They would love to hear from you. We also have a Visitor and Phone Call Request form which is available at the back of church. This form can either be completed for yourself or on behalf of someone who you believe would appreciate a visit or a phone call from a member of the Pastoral Team. There is a box clearly marked at the back of church where you can put the slip. If you are unable to complete the form because you are not in church, please telephone, text or email Rev Martin or Gillian. We look forward to hearing from you.

“The Happy Bodgers”. About a year ago a few of our gentlemen were looking at how they can work together to help others who may be in need of a practical assistance. As a result they formed a group called “The Happy Bodgers”. Happily they are far more skilled than their title suggests and they are able to offer a variety of help free of charge.

Try us - we can say no if we don't feel capable. We could probably not take on regular tasks such as lawn mowing, weeding, shopping etc. Why not give us a call on 01748 826803 and John Dickinson will see if the Happy Bodgers can help, and take it from there.” We look forward to helping you.

THE WEDNESDAY BIBLE STUDY GROUP - THE LUNN’S - 2 HURGILL ROAD, 7.30pm: Everybody is welcome to join us for cake, chat and discussion. Please contact Scott on 826895 for more information. New members are very welcome. Hopefully restarting the 3rd week of September - please check website and pewsheet for confirmation. We hope to finish the gospel of Mark before Advent! THE THURSDAY BIBLE STUDY GROUP - JENNIFER PATRICK’S, - 1 ROPER COURT, 7.30pm: This is another very friendly group. The group will start back after the summer and meet at the Rectory on Thursday 13th and 20th September. They will then return to Jennifer’s home from the 27th. They are discussing Bishop John Pritchard’s book Ten having reached chapter 3 “Ten things I don’t believe about God”. Please call Jennifer on 850693 for more details. All are welcome.

The One Hour Bible – From Adam to Apocalypse in Sixty Minutes by Phili Law, SPCK, £4.99 According to a recent Bible Society survey, around 30% of parents in the UK don't know that Adam and Eve, David and Goliath, or the Good Samaritan are in the Bible, and 27% think Superman is or might be a biblical story! Over 33% believe the same about Harry Potter and over 50% even reckon The Hunger Games is or might be a story from the Bible. The one-hour Bible is a taster (rather than a replacement!) for anyone wanting to explore well-known parts of the Bible on the go. Maybe a good book to loan to someone interested in knowing more about Christianity. Is Your God Too Small? - Enlarging our vision in the face of life's struggles by David Potter, BRF, £8.99 Job struggled, as we do, with huge questions - his own and the world's. He and his friends looked for an answer in the past, but discovered that the answer lay elsewhere - in God Himself, and in the divine presence in his life. In this book David Potter opens up fresh insight into the book of Job, with a different perspective on our sufferings and perhaps on God.

Richmond 2 Richmond 2018 The first week of August proved an energetic one for James (13) and Andrew (11) Lunn and their Dad Scott (older!) Lunn. Inspired by the Richmond 2 Richmond bike ride done by the bellringers a couple of years ago the boys wanted to ride from Richmond in Surrey to Richmond North over 5 days. Having read about the #backingthebutterwick campaign in the Northern Echo they wanted to “Do good, undo harm”. They set off from St Mary Magdalene in Richmond Surrey following a warm welcome and a blessing, stayed with the Wrangham family in Royston on the Monday night, a church family in Bourne on the Tuesday night, Gainsborough with Gillian (and clean clothes!) on the Wednesday night, the Lennox family in York on the Thursday night and back via Sharow and Bishop Helen-Ann Hartley for lunch and a blessing to encourage them on the last leg of their epic 305 miles. Some cycling enthusiasts who had read about their journey on social media joined them at Ripon in what can only be described as “biblical weather” and cycled them home to Richmond where the church bells rang them in and an ice cream awaited them at The Station. A family and friends bbq followed that evening which Andrew slept through most of on the Scrafton’s sofa. Andrew had been battling a virus from before he set off but he was a determined little chap and despite being given every opportunity to back out he kept going. Although the boys have completed this part of the ride Marcus Weston a friend from Richmond school who has a condition called Cardio Facio Cutaneous Syndrome aims to ride 30 miles spread over the month of September on his adapted tricycle. The campaign for the boys will then culminate in them cycling the Big Butterwick Bike Ride at the end of September (a 26 mile bike ride in and beyond Stockton on Tees). At the time of going to press they have raised £4300 and are aiming to hit £5000 by the end of September. You can see photos of the bike ride on the church website - go to gallery and there is an album called Richmond 2 Richmond 2018. The boys (and Scott and Gillian) are so so touched by the love and support and prayers which they have been given.
