The Rockers are holding a Name the Mascot contest, with the finalist names being Buck, Giddy Up, Hay Hay, Hobby, Thunder, Hutch, Hype, Ribbie and Splinter. MACEDONIA BASEBALL LEAGUE 20TH ANNIVERSARY We love our community partnerships! High Point Parks & Recreation honored the Macedonia Family Resource Center as it celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Macedonia Baseball League. “This program would not work without Parks & Recreation,” said Dell McCormick, Executive Director at MFRC. “Inner city youth baseball leagues have all but disappeared, but in High Point, ours has 12 teams and over 200 kids - and it’s growing every year. What we have is very unique and positive, and we are honored by this partnership.” May 4 is opening day; please call 336.883.0300. EARTH DAY AT THE PEC On Earth Day, the Piedmont Environmental Center welcomed volunteers from six Tri- ad-based Entercome radio stations, who generously gave their time to repaint the PEC’s North Carolina mapscape. Entercom’s sustainability initiative, called “1 Day 1 Thing,” involves more than 300 radio stations participating in projects on Earth Day. Brent Millar, Senior Vice President and Market Manager, said, “Across the country there are over 3,000 Entercom employees working on projects in support of the environment and Earth Day. We are happy to do what we can to help our community and make the world a better place to live.” PEC Director Dick Thomas said, “It’s wonderful to see volunteers out here on Earth Day to improve the North Carolina mapscape. When students and visitors walk it, they realize how diverse and full of natural resources the geography of our state is. It’s a great learning tool.” Thank you to Entercom stations 93.1 The Wolf, 102 JAMZ, 98.7 Simon, 97.1 QMG, 1510AM Big Weal Gospel and WPE AM 950 for your hard work and enthusiastic spirit! Happy National Library Workers Day and National Library Week to our wonderful High Point Public Library Staff! TRANSIT SYSTEM OPERATORS OF THE YEAR 2018 Transit Operator of the Year Melissa “Missy” Laubach has earned the privilege of being selected as the 2018 Transit Operator of the Year! Missy has been with the Transit System for seven years. 2018 Paratransit Operator of the Year Brenda Bolton has earned this award for the third time. She has been employed with HPTS Access since 2010. In order to be eligible for these awards, oper- ators must be employed for one full year. The decision is more than a popularity contest – the number of votes received from passengers, supervisors and other coach operators each equals 25% of the nominees’ final scores. The nominees’ performance evaluations account for the remaining 25%. The following criteria are used by passengers, operators and supervisors for selecting the award recipients: • Deals courteously and patiently with the public • Provides expert, safe and reliable service • Avoids arguments with passengers • Has a positive attitude in providing essential public service • Is capable in bus handling procedures • Is neat in appearance Congratulations, Missy and Brenda! GET ON BOARD FOR NEW NAME, NEW LOOK, NEW SERVICE The High Point Transit System joined with PART, GTA and WSTA to provide free rides on all routes for Get On Board Day on April 25. Get On Board Day is a national advocacy day for generating awareness and support for public transportation. Effective April 1, fares on HPTS are $1.25, and senior/disabled/Medicare fares are 60 cents. HPTS also introduced POINT Cards and POINT Passes, which are cards made of durable plastic and store monetary value. This is not only more environmentally friendly, but also easier for passengers to board, reload value and be issued a new card with the balance if lost or stolen.
