This study examines three such wars, all of which were directed against the Land of Canaan. Two campaigns were conducted by Egyptian Pharaohs and one by the Israelites. The question considered being Eero Junkkaala whether or not these wars really took place. This study gives one methodological viewpoint to answer this ques- tion. Altogether 116 sites were studied, and the com- parison between the texts and the archaeological results offered a possibility of establishing whether the cities mentioned, in the sources in question, were inhabited, and, furthermore, might have been destroyed during the time of the Pharaohs and the biblical settlement pe- riod. Despite the nature of the two written sources being so very different it was possible to make a comparative study. This study gives a fresh view on the fierce discus- sion concerning the emergence of the Israelites. It also challenges both Egyptological and biblical studies to use the written texts and the archaeological material togeth- er so that they are not so separated from each other, as is often the case.

  • The Great War in Palestine: Dr Tawfiq Canaan’S Photographic Album Aleppo to Damascus and Every German Soldier Went to See the Famous Sun Temple
The year 2014 marks the centenary of WWI, The Great War in called by the British until today “the Great Palestine: War.” For the history of Palestine this was indeed a great and decisive war. Dr Tawfiq A marvelous documentation of World War I Canaan’s is a photo album found among the belongings of the late Israeli archeologist Pesah Baradon.1 Photographic The album has no owner’s name, but without Album much doubt it seems to have belonged to the famous Palestinian physician Dr. Tawfiq Norbert Schwake Canaan.2 The photographs in the first part of the album have captions written in German in white ink, faded in many places. The album shows mainly German and Turkish medical personnel in places where Dr. Canaan was stationed, and also unique pictures of him and his family and friends. Some of the photographs were most certainly taken by a non-professional amateur or amateurs, most likely by Dr. Canaan himself. Almost every German soldier at the Palestine front had brought along his camera – Tawfiq Canaan, living in a German milieu, was no different. On the civilian side the well-known professional photographers of the American Colony in Jerusalem were mostly Protestants like Canaan. Others, like Garabed Krikorian, were very much linked to Canaan’s Protestant community. Therefore it is no surprise to find in his album high quality photographs that must have come from these professionals. The album starts with pictures from the itinerary of a German soldier coming to the Palestine front: the railway station of Bozanti (Pozanti) at the northern entrance of the Taurus tunnel, another station of the Anatolian railway, the bifurcation to the Baghdad railway at Muslimiye north of Aleppo (called “Aleppo station” in the caption) and then the German headquarters in Aleppo.

  • The Megiddo Expedition: Archaeology and the Bible
Westpfahl UW-L Journal of Undergraduate Research VIII (2005) The Megiddo Expedition: Archaeology and the Bible Jennifer Westpfahl Faculty sponsor: Mark Chavalas, Department of History ABSTRACT The site of Megiddo is widely regarded as one of the most important biblical period sites in Israel. Surrounded by fortifications, supplied by hidden water installations and covered with impressive palaces and temples, Megiddo was one of the most important cities in Canaan and Israel. Because of its location and importance, archaeologists have been excavating the site for over one hundred years. Biblical scholars often cite Megiddo as a site containing supporting evidence for the chronology found in the biblical text, a subject that has come into controversy in recent times. The controversy is based in part on the archaeology of the United Monarchy in ancient Israel under the Davidic dynasty, a viewpoint based primarily on reports from the biblical text. This report discusses the history of Megiddo, the current controversy, archaeological techniques used by the current Expedition and preliminary results from the 2004 season. TEL MEGIDDO: AN INTRODUCTION The site of Megiddo is widely regarded as one of Israel’s most important archaeological sites for the Bronze and Iron Ages (Finkelstein et al. 2000) and is the only site in the Levant mentioned in all great records of the Ancient Near East including the Old and New Testaments, Egyptian, Assyrian and Hittite sources. Strategically located above the most important land route in the ancient Near East, the Via Maris, the city dominated international traffic for over 6000 years – from ca. 7000 B.C.E.

The concessionnaires appointed as their surveyor for the portion of country east of the Jordan HeiT Gottlieb Schumacher, that part lying between Haifa and the River having been already surveyed by the officers of this Society for their great Map of Western Palestine. In the course of his work Herr Schumacher found it necessary, as well as possible, to make many scientific observations, notes, maps, and drawings which he afterwards embodied in the memoir which forms the greater part of this volume. Ivii. INTRODUCTION: NOTES 1. Glen W. Bowersock, Augustus and the Greek World, Oxford, 1964, p.66. In fairness it should be pointed out that Bowersock himself, in later works, "City Development in Syria under Vespasian", Vestigia 17, 1973 (Sixth International Congress for Greek and Latin Epigraphy, Munich 1972), pp.123-129, and "Syria under Vespasian", JRS LXIII, 1973, pp.133- 140, has taken a more liberal approach to the subject. Based on the substance, rather than the language of the relevant inscriptions, together with pertinent archaeological and textual evidence, these studies endeavour to determine the impact on the cities of Syria and Arabia in terms of expansion, of the policy implemented by Vespasian's legate, Traianus. Although Bowersock himself does not use the word 'Romanization', such a programme can hardly be other than one of Romanization in effect, even if this is not its primary aim.

CLARK, 38 George Street 1929 PRINTED IN GREAT RRITAIN BY MORRISON AND GIBFl LIMITEn FOR ~ & ~ CLAR~ EDINBURGH LONDON· SIMPKIN, MARSHALL, HAMILTON, KENT AND CO. LIMITED NEW YORK CHARLES SCRIBNRR'S SONS PREFACE THE object of the writer in issuing this book is not so much to give a concise account of the Harvard excavations at Samaria, in so far as they throw light on the history of Israel, as to state certain significant conclusions which seem to be based upon them. So much has been written on the Old Testament that another book, however small, on the subject may seem superfluous, but the excava tions disclose important new facts derived from the best of all historical sources, the pick and the spade. They give us fresh knowledge of Israel in Ahab's time, and much enlightenment on the northern Semitic alphabet and other matters. A new picture of Samaria, with its royal and civil administration, takes the place of the old long-familiar one, and supplements the scanty historical material in the Biblical record. The researches of scholars in Old Testament literature and wider Semitics have afforded us more information in the last fifty years than were gained in all the preceding ages. Yet it is little compared with all that lies untouched.
