Foreword In our pluralistic age we recognize many traditions have special gifts to make to a rich, well-balanced spirituality for our time. My own life has shown me the spiritual tradition stemming from St. Dominic, like that from his contemporary St. Francis, provides ever fresh insights. We must see it unfold historically in those who have been formed by that tradition in many times and situations and have furthered its development. The son of a fabric merchant, he enjoyed status and wealth, but he gave up every material thing he owned to follow the path of God. St. Francis devoted himself to solitude, prayer, and service to the poor, and his commitment to poverty was the keynote of his spirit and way of life. His life showed how to have compassion for the poor, the outcast, and the oppressed and inspired a journey toward peace, nonviolence, and reconciliation. His message is a light for the present and the future. The decision to construct St. Francis of Assisi Church came from the realization that this property would become the Motherhouse of the American Province of the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis: the place where women would be prepared for religious life, the place where the Sisters would return for Community gatherings, and a place the Sisters could call home. From 1875-1930, the Motherhouse was at St. John’s Hospital, 800 East Carpenter Street, Springfield, IL. In 1920, after several years of planning, construction began on this church under the direction of Monsignor Joseph C. Straub, Priest Director of the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis, and Mother Marciana Willebrand, OSF, Provincial Superior of the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis. As the great apostle of this devotion, the Jesuit Father Henri Ramière, wrote: “It is in the Eucharist that we actually discover the Heart of Jesus; it is in the Eucharist that He is united in the most intimate way with us, and we with Him.” We list here below the so-called “twelve promises of the Sacred Heart” which the Lord revealed to the Saint: 1) To those devoted to My Sacred Heart, I will grant all the graces and aids necessary to their state in life (Letter n. 141) 2) I will establish and maintain peace in their families (Letter n. 35) 3) I will console them in all their afflictions (Letter n. 141) 4) I will be for them a safe refuge in life and above all at the hour of death (Letter n. 141) 5) I will pour down abundant blessings on all their labors and undertakings (Letter n. 141) 6) Sinners will find in my Heart an inexhaustible fountain of Mercy (Letter n. 132) 7) Souls that are lukewarm will become zealous with the practice of this devotion (Letter n. 132) 8) Fervent souls will rapidly rise up to a high state of perfection (Letter n. 132) 9) My blessing will rest on those places where the image of My Sacred Heart is displayed and venerated (Letter n.
