Their mission is to provide free cleft surgeries for millions of poor children in developing countries. My family and I have donated by a house yard sale, and I have also done fundraising at my elementary school, however, they were not as successful as I hoped. I'm hoping you can help. After my family and I send an amount of money towards the Smile Train, they send a letterb ack saying who you've helped, and a bit of the patient's background life before, and after the surgery.

    Changing Perception of LGBT People Through Performances – Theater and Television in America and in Japan Atsushi Fujita+ (Japan) Abstract This paper examines how LGBT representations in popular media have changed people’s perception and is eventually changing society. American TV programs and theater have played significant roles in terms of advancement of LGBT issues. I look at three TV shows that made LGBT people visible in American society, and three revival theatrical productions on Broadway that urge us to look back at the history and keep fighting for equality. Compared to the U.S., Japan has a long way to go in terms of LGBT issues. However, social and political changes are happening especially in recent years. I analyze three recent TV shows shedding positive light on LGBT characters and argue that the change in Japan has been happening in a similar way which demonstrates how important these cultural representations are for the change. Ellen DeGeneres' Tulane Commencement Speech: Is She Getting Through to Anybody? Abstract In this paper, I analyze the commencement speech given by Ellen DeGeneres at Tulane University in 2009. I argue that through identifying with her audience and employing a rhetorical style consisting of a careful balance between humor and tragedy as an additional factor to her use of the commencement genre style presented in Margaret LaWare’s essay, "Redefining The Good' Life': Life Lessons And Virtues In Commencement Speeches By Women,” DeGeneres is able to establish enough ethos to be seen as a highly credible source on the subject of life, and is able to resonate with her audience and make a point they perceive to be widely reasonable and sound. Born on January 26, 1958 into a middle-class family in Metairie, Louisiana, DeGeneres grew up riding her bicycle through the streets of New Orleans, a city that prides itself on a diverse and quirky population. Although the family moved to Texas for several years, DeGeneres, after dropping out of college in the mid-1970s, returned to New Orleans to follow her own unconventional path. She worked a series of jobs, from oyster shucker to housepainter, before stumbling into comedy. Her first stand-up act was performed at an informal show at a friend's party. DeGeneres came on stage with a burger and fries and proceeded to eat as she talked, forcing the audience to wait as she chewed between lines. In this first show, she not only entertained her friends, but she began to create the bumbling everywoman character who would later convulse audiences across the country. DeGeneres began to perform stand-up in coffeehouses and comedy clubs in New Orleans, then around the country as she developed her act.

Although current media contain many powerful role models, they also contain stereotypical messages about appearance, relationships, and careers. Part 2, "Delivering the Message," examines the myth that there are enough positive female role models and considers the economic and creative factors driving industry decisions. Part 3,"Accepting the Challenge," presents recommendations developed at the conference. The action agenda recommendations were:(1) develop a national public health campaign;(2) mobilize a coalition of powerful advertisers and broadcasters; (3) promote success stories to dispel conventional wisdom; (4) stage a national broadcast event to focus attention; and (5) dedicate the 1998 conference to examining race. Recommendations regarding defining positive role models were to create female characters we would want our own daughters to emulate, who are similar to "real" girls, and who are leaders.

    Ellen DeGeneres — Time for a Crisis Management Lesson David E. Johnson, CEO, Strategic Vision PR Group Talk show host and comedian, Ellen DeGeneres is the latest celebrity that could be cancelled. Both she and the top management of her hit talk show, “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” are under an internal investigation by the show’s distributor, Warner Brothers. There are allegations of intimidation, sexual misconduct, and racism. DeGeneres attempted to stem some of the damage by issuing an apology to staff but also denying direct knowledge of the alleged misconduct and shifting the blame to senior staff. This brought forth allegations by previous guests on the show including actor, Brad Garrett, actress Lea Thompson, and Dutch beauty blogger Nikkie de Jager that the misconduct was common knowledge. The Ellen DeGeneres story offers some key lessons for celebrities and brands in terms of crisis management: 1. Be authentic to your brand. Ellen DeGeneres long had the reputation among the public for being funny, kind, and compassionate. She was portrayed as a ‘woke’ celebrity before people talked about being ‘woke’. These allegations, particularly in this climate shattered that image and go against everything that people believed about her brand. 2. Offer a sincere apology that takes responsibility. Ellen issued an apology last week. But the apology was seen as shifting blame for what happened on to senior staff. She never took responsibility for anything. It was seen by many as a non-apology, apology. People were looking to see her take responsibility and offer concrete steps for moving forward. Rather it was seen as being evasive and actually created more controversy and criticism.
