I am pleased to report that the N. W. Members are delighted with the tit bits of news items of George and the Branch Meetings and I am looking forward to receiving as much information from as possible. Just Received news on the grapevine that Anthony Mason was playing on Llandudno Pier last Saturday afternoon and a young boy stood in the audience wearing a large badge and singing along to all George's songs. Low and behold it was our Ashley, who was chosen as our N.West Celebrity Of The Year at Warrington. Our Ceb is getting everywhere! Now it must have been a bad day for Anthony as, now and again, he would forget the next line. As Anthony said "It's a bit daunting as one gust of wind and I'm off the end of the pier." So he was pleased when he saw Ashley and he invited him to sing with him on the stage. G-R-E-A-T - Ashley knew all the words and everybody loved it. They gave Ashley thunderous applause. Our celebrity is a Llandudno STAR. ***************************************************************** Just Received a letter from Jeffrey (Formby) Booth along with a torn out page from an engineering magazine.

THE NORTH- WEST GEORGE FORMBY Vol. 2, No.1 Newsletter 1 3 July 1996 l Specially Produced for the North- West Branches of The George Formby Society by Stan Evans, The Hollies, 19 Hall Nook, Penketh, Warrington Cheshire W A5 2HN Tel or Fax 01925 727102 2 Welcome to Newsletter No. 13- is it really 12 months ago since dear Wally Cronshaw pressurised me into launching the first copy? It certainly is. So what have we got this month? Well, on page four Ken Ratcliffe gives his short tribute to Wally. Alf Caldwell makes an appeal to anyone who might know what happened to George's mask. The dreaded No. 13 has struck again because on pages 9 & 10 we have sad news of vandals desecrating Ashley L~· nch's grave and also the loss of one of the Midland's members. We have news of two excellent meetings which were held at Crewe and Pen~ffordd and also an explanation on why Len Philips was slurring his words at New Brighton. Harry Stanford - God Bless Him - is up and fighting again and giving an account of why the stage manager interrupted his act and threw him off the Pavilion stage- of course we take it all with a t>inch of salt. Bob Drinkwater. ... In response to your comment in the last issue that we in the Midlands don't send an~· material for the Newsletter I thought that I would get down to sending an article in. In October 1948 George Formby pla~· ed at Dudle~· Hippodr-ome.

Org'n British Open letter to men who have left Overton: Your numbers are Legion now over 100, many of you lads became men overnight. Leaving your homes in the village, nonetheless willing because of compulsory service than was the case of your elders in 1914, you are fighting against the same enemy as they and on the same soil. Everything is much the same – canteens, songs, going away, longing for leave, homecomings, goodbyes, laughter and tears – back again to the mud, all the same. One thing is surely different. As in hundreds of villages like ours you leave behind a branch of the British Legion formed and on the sure foundation of a comradeship formed so long ago and yet still enduring the passing years. We pray that you may complete the task to which you have set your whole energy and return with the advantage of being welcomed by the Legion waiting like we shall be like Gunga Din, fifty paces right flank near to serve.

Well we have reports from Liverpool, Sale, Crewe, Werrington and North Wales and also news on the death of dear Charlie Chester. A great day 'at the Pe.'lketh Carnival is reported and one of our young GFS ex - members, Michael Davis of Blackpool, is doing great guns with his entertaining. We have a report on Ken Goodwin, the comedian. Ken Ratcliffe explains how Sale was first launched and John Guy tells us how the ukulele got its name. We also have a report on how Sandy Powell came to say, "Can you hear me mother." So now you can read on •••. ************************************************************* Another Great Day at Penketh Carnival- sat July 5th, and as usual, an excellent day in Penketh. The sun shone throughout the whole day and we attracted two and a half full houses into our marquee. Concert No.2 however brought thunderous applause from the crowds when we invited a bunch of local Memory Lane Cake Makers (who were drowning their sorrows through fears of redundancy) to take the stage to sing with us. Marie knew the George Formby words as well as we did - like her colleagues said- "She's singing George Formby songs all day!" She thoroughl)' enjoyed blasting out "Lamp Post", "Windows" and "Blackpool Rock" and went red in the face with the determined effort she put into it.
