Harris ________________________ Henry Bial Date approved _______________ 3 ABSTRACT My study examines the playwrights August Wilson and Tony Kushner as “political” artists whose work, while positing very different definitions of “community,” offers a similar critique of an American tendency toward a kind of misguided, dangerous individualism that precludes “interconnection.” I begin with a look at how “community” is defined by each author through interviews and personal statements. My approach to the plays which follow is thematic as opposed to chronological. The organization, in fact, mirrors a pattern often found in the plays themselves: I begin with individuals who are cut off from their respective communities, turn to individuals who “reconnect” through encounters with communal history and memory, and conclude by examining various “successful” visions of community and examples of communities in crisis and decay. -

Classic Novels: Meeting the Challenge of Great Literature Parts I–III Professor Arnold Weinstein THE TEACHING COMPANY ® Arnold Weinstein, Ph.D. Edna and Richard Salomon Distinguished Professor of Comparative Literature, Brown University Born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1940, Arnold Weinstein attended public schools before going to Princeton University for his college education (B.A. in Romance Languages, 1962, magna cum laude). He spent a year studying French literature at the Université de Paris (1960−1961) and a year after college at the Freie Universität Berlin, studying German literature. His graduate work was done at Harvard University (M.A. in Comparative Literature, 1964; Ph.D. in Comparative Literature, 1968), including a year as a Fulbright Scholar at the Université de Lyon in 1966−1967. Professor Weinstein’s professional career has taken place almost entirely at Brown University, where he has gone from Assistant Professor to his current position as Edna and Richard Salomon Distinguished Professor of Comparative Literature. He won the Workman Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Humanities in 1995. He has also won a number of prestigious fellowships, including a Fulbright Fellowship in American literature at Stockholm University in 1983 and research fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities in 1998 (in the area of literature and medicine) and in 2007 (in the area of Scandinavian literature). Singing in English in the 21st Century: A Study Comparing and Applying the Tenets of Madeleine Marshall and Kathryn LaBouff. Doctor of Musical Arts (Performance), August 2015, 171 pp., 6 tables, 21 figures, bibliography, 141 titles. The English diction texts by Madeleine Marshall and Kathryn LaBouff are two of the most acclaimed manuals on singing in this language. Differences in style between the two have separated proponents to be primarily devoted to one or the other. An in- depth study, comparing the precepts of both authors, and applying their principles, has resulted in an understanding of their common ground, as well as the need for the more comprehensive information, included by LaBouff, on singing in the dialect of American Standard, and changes in current Received Pronunciation, for British works, and Mid- Atlantic dialect, for English language works not specifically North American or British. Chapter 1 introduces Marshall and The Singer’s Manual of English Diction, and LaBouff and Singing and Communicating in English. An overview of selected works from Opera America’s resources exemplifies the need for three dialects in standardized English training. -

Fred Hersch January 2012 Proclaimed by Vanity Fair magazine, “the most arrestingly innovative pianist in jazz over the last decade or so,” Fred Hersch balances his internationally recognized instrumental skills with significant achievements as a composer, bandleader, and theatrical conceptualist, as well as remaining an in-demand collaborator with other noted bandleaders and vocalists. As a solo pianist (he was the first artist in the 75-year history of New York's legendary Village Vanguard to play week-long engagements as a solo pianist - his second featured run is documented on the 2011 release, Alone at the Vanguard); as leader of a widely praised trio whose Whirl found its way onto numerous 2010 best-recordings-of-the-year lists; and as the impetus behind the ambitious 2011 production, “My Coma Dreams,” a full-evening work for 11 instruments, actor/singer and animation/multimedia -- Hersch has fully lived up to the approbation of the New York Times who, in a featured Sunday Magazine article, praised him as “singular among the trailblazers of their art, a largely unsung innovator of this borderless, individualistic jazz – a jazz for the 21st century.” He is nominated for two 2012 Grammy Awards for Alone at the Vanguard - for Best Jazz Album and Best Improvised Jazz Solo. In addition to his more than three-dozen recordings as a leader/co-leader, his numerous awards include a 2003 Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship for composition, and a Grammy® nomination for Best Instrumental Composition, as well as two Grammy® nominations for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance. Hersch has featured himself as either a solo performer or at the helm of varied small ensembles, which in addition to his trio, include a quintet, as well as his "Pocket Orchestra" featuring an unconventional line- up of piano, trumpet, voice and percussion. -

The Wall Street Fred Hersch Trio Journal calls the trio “one of the major ensembles of our time,” and the New Yorker describes their musical sound as having “high lyricism and high danger.” This version of the trio started Fred Hersch ...............piano playing together in 2009 and have since released two albums, Whirl (2010) and Alive at the Vanguard (2012). Whirl found its way into numerous 2010 Best-Recordings-of-the-Year lists, John Hébert ...............bass and the trio has toured extensively in both Europe and the US to wide acclaim. Kurt Elling February 2011 Kurt Elling is among the world’s foremost jazz vocalists. He has been named “Male Singer of the Year” by the Jazz Journalists Association on half a dozen occasions in the past ten years, and during the same interval has been the perennial winner of the DownBeat Critics Poll. He is also a Grammy winner, and every record he has made has been Grammy nominated. Elling’s rich baritone spans four octaves and features both astonishing technical mastery and emotional depth. His command of rhythm, texture, phrasing, and dynamics is more like a virtuoso jazz instrumentalist than a vocalist. His repertoire includes original compositions and modern interpretations of standards, all of which are springboards for inspired improvisation, scatting, spoken word, and poetry. Declared The New York Times, “Elling is the standout male vocalist of our time.” Said The Washington Post, “Since the mid-1990s, no singer in jazz has been as daring, dynamic or interesting as Kurt Elling. With his soaring vocal flights, his edgy lyrics and sense of being on a musical mission, he has come to embody the creative spirit in jazz.” He has been featured in profiles for CBS Sunday Morning, CNN, on Ramsey Lewis’s Legends of Jazz, and in hundreds of publications. For Immediate Release August 6, 2012 Contact: Kati Mitchell 617-496-2000x8841 [email protected] American Repertory Theater partners with Creative Action Project and 826 Boston on Podcast Play Series Cambridge, MA — The American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) collaborates this summer with 826 Boston, a not-for-profit writing center based in Roxbury, MA, and Creative Action Project, a program of Cambridge Community Services, on a series of site-specific “podcast plays” designed to creatively engage local teens with public spaces around Greater Boston. A.R.T. teaching artists are leading three-day workshops in Cambridge and in Roxbury, in which groups of teenagers learn about the fundamentals of playwriting, practice collaborative storytelling, and participate in a writing immersion exercise at the Fresh Pond Reservation and Franklin Park, respectively. The young playwrights are challenged to locate a place in the park that inspires them, and then imagine a short play that could happen at that site. The resultant plays are recorded as audio, by a mix of teen playwrights and graduate acting students from the A.R.T./MXAT Institute for Advanced Theater Training at Harvard University. These plays will be uploaded to the A.R.T. website, as well as the Cambridge Water Department and Franklin Park Coalition websites. The A.R.T., with staff from the Cambridge Water Department and the Franklin Park Coalition, is developing a “theatrical walking tour” map for each park, which park-goers can download along with the podcast series and enjoy on their next visit to the Fresh Pond Reservation or Franklin Park.
