In football, three American Athletic Conference teams were in the final Col- lege Football Playoff rankings of 2015, while two teams from The American were ranked in the top 20 of the final national polls in both 2013 and 2015. Eight of The American’s 12 football teams played in bowl games to cap the 2015 season as Houston defeated Florida State in the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl and Navy beat Pittsburgh in the Military Bowl. Houston’s finish at No. 8 nationally gave The American a top-10 team in the final national polls for the second time in the league’s three seasons. UCF finished No. 10 in the 2013 rankings after the Knights’ Fiesta Bowl win against Baylor.

In 2014, The American had the best men’s basketball postseason record of any league, when conference teams were a combined 13-4, and the league sent four teams to the 2016 NCAA Championship. Teams from The Ameri- can have registered top-10 national rankings in football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s soccer, men’s golf, and men’s track and field. Individual teams in The American have enjoyed unprecedented success since the conference’s formation. Houston went 13-1 in the 2015 football season, setting a school record for wins, while Navy won a program-record 11 games in its first season in the conference, also in 2015. The 2014 season saw Memphis finish with 10 wins in football for the first time since 1938, while Temple enjoyed its first 10-win season in 2015.

American Athletic Conference student-athletes have distinguished them- selves in all facets of intercollegiate athletics. Temple linebacker Tyler Matakevich won the Bednarik Award and the Nagurski Trophy as the na- tion’s top defensive player in 2015, while Navy quarterback Keenan Reyn- olds finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting. UConn basketball stand- out Breanna Stewart finished her career as the most decorated player in college basketball history as she was chosen as the consensus national player of the year for the third time and became the first player be named four times as the Most Outstanding Player at the Final Four.

Reynolds and Stewart were selected as the winners of the 2016 AAU James E. Sullivan Award as the nation’s top amateur athletes, marking only the second time in the 86-year history of the award that multiple winners were chosen.

The 2016 American Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Championship will be decided at the home of the number one overall seed. First round matches will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 2, followed by the semifinals on Friday Nov. 4, and the championship game on Sunday, Nov. 6.

In 2013, top-seed UCF downed Rutgers in penalty kicks to capture The American’s automatic qualifier. The final and both semifinals were scoreless draws decided in penalty kicks. The weekend produced three teams in the NCAA Championship, as UCF and Rutgers were joined by Louisville in the field of 64.

In 2014, No. 4 seed UConn upset the 2014 regular-season champion and top-seeded UCF in the semifinals, 1-0. The Huskies proceeded to advance past No. 3 seed USF in the final, 3-2 in penalty kicks, after a scoreless draw to claim The American tournament championship. For the second consecutive year, three American Athletic Conference teams extended their seasons to play in the NCAA tournament. UCF, UConn and USF all earned bids to the NCAA College Cup, with UCF advancing to the third round before being eliminated by the eventual national champion, Florida State.

Cincinnati took the Lone Star State by storm in the 2015 championship. The Bearcats won an overtime thriller against against the regular season champions, the UConn Huskies 3-2 to advance to the semifinals. On the other side of the bracket, No. 2 seed USF Bulls defeated the UCF Knights 1-0 in a double overtime feat. In the championship match, Cincinnati upset USF on penalty kicks as the Bearcats won 4-2. A conference record four teams extended their season as they played in the 2015 Women’s College Cup. UConn, Cincinnati, UCF, and USF all earned bids to the NCAA tournament with UConn advancing to the third round before being eliminated by Rutgers.

N o t e b o o k • UCF brings back the American’s reigning Co-Offensive Player of the Year: Carol Rodrigues. The Brazilian forward was the conference’s leading point and goal scorer in conference-only matches last year. She is most well-known for her SportsCenter Top 10 bicycle kick against Tulsa last year.

• UCF’s roster features 11 returning players who clocked time in at least 10 matches last year. Among those returners are all- conference honorees Rodrigues (first team), Kayla Adamek (first team) and Vera Varis (rookie team; all-tournament team).

• UCF appeared in the NCAA Tournament for the 20th time last season. The Knights own an active stretch of nine-straight berths, making UCF one of 11 teams in the country to boast such a streak.

• Head coach Tiffany Roberts Sahaydak, a two-time American Coach of the Year, enters her fourth season at the helm one win away from her 100th career victory.
