Dr. MacPhee created Volume VII when he added supplemental data and errata to the original 1792 Volume II. This electronic edition has been amended for the errata noted by Dr. MacPhee. - i - THE LIVES OF OUR FATHERS PREFACE TO VOLUME II In Volume I the author has established the surnames of most of our Clan and has proposed the sources of the peculiar name by which our Gaelic compatriots defined us. In this examination we have examined alternate progenitors of the family. Any reader of Scottish history realizes that Highlanders like to move and like to set up small groups of people in which they can become heads of families or chieftains. This was true in Colonsay and there were almost a dozen areas in Scotland where the clansman and his children regard one of these as 'home'. The writer has tried to define the nature of these homes, and to study their growth. It will take some years to organize comparative material and we have indicated in Chapter III the areas which should require research. In Chapter IV the writer has prepared a list of possible chiefs of the clan over a thousand years. The books on our Clan give very little information on these chiefs but the writer has recorded some probable comments on his chiefship.

I hope this finds you all well and excited to get back to a more normal lifestyle. We are excited as we will finally get to meet in person for our Annual Meeting and Gathering of the Clans in August and hope you all make an effort to come. We haven't seen you all in over a year and a half and we are looking forward to your smiling faces and a chance to talk with all of you. Covid-19 has been rough on all of us; it has been a horrible year plus. But the officers of the Society have been meeting on a regular basis trying hard to keep the Society going. Now it is your turn to come and get involved once again. After all, a Society is not a society if we don't gather! Make sure to mark your calendar for August 7th, put on your best Tartan and we will see you then. She is survived by her son Anthony and two daughters Sally and Judith. Mary Elizabeth, 18 th Countess of Rothes (left) with her sister the 13th Countess of Devon. After Ian, 21 st Earl of Rothes asked me to find the descendants of the Hon Edward Courtenay Haworth-Leslie who had come to Australia, I grew very close to Mary and she will be sadly missed. Mary was a 2 nd cousin twice removed to our current Clan Chief Alex Leslie. Mary Haworth Grigor (Leslie) Barrie Leslie, Gordon, NSW. BRANCHES AND EXTENDED NAMES The Family name was derived as “Macdougall” from Prince Fergus’ grandson, Duegald, second son of Uchtred Lord of Galloway and who was killed (1185) while fighting on the side of his brother Roland in a feudal reconquest of Galloway. The Galloway name of “Macdougall” was transliterated to “Macdowyl” in July 1292 under Edward I of England and Macdowall has persisted over the eight centuries since with many (about 76) variations.
