Press Release April 2015 Miss Piggy to Receive Her First Award at the 2015 Sackler Center First Awards at the Brooklyn Museum on June 4 Event to Feature Miss Piggy in Conversation with Gloria Steinem Kermit the Frog to Attend Ceremony Miss Piggy, ultimate diva and star of stage and screen, who has inspired generations throughout the world, will receive her very first award at the annual Sackler Center First Awards at the Brooklyn Museum. Kermit the Frog, who has received numerous awards and accolades in his lifetime, will be in the audience to witness this great honor. The awards ceremony and reception will take place at the Brooklyn Museum on Thursday, June 4, from 5 to 7 p.m. A private reception will be followed by the award presentation to Miss Piggy by Elizabeth Sackler. Miss Piggy, who was recently called “The Gloria Steinem of the Muppet world” by the Daily Beast, will give a brief acceptance speech, followed by a 20-minute video retrospective of her career, after which she will take the stage with Ms. Steinem, who has been on hand for the Sackler Center First Awards since its 2012 launch. The Muppets Studio will be sponsoring several groups attending this special event including children and their families from Ronald McDonald House New York, a temporary home-away-from-home for families battling pediatric cancer; Brooklyn-based Girl Scout Troops 2081 and 2158; Brooklyn-based Girls for Gender Equity; and artists from Groundswell, a community mural project. The annual Sackler Center First Awards celebrates women who have broken gender barriers and made remarkable contributions in their fields. -

The Impact of Matriarchal Traditions on the Advancement of Ashanti Women in Ghana Karen McGee What is the impact of a matriarchal tradition and the tradition of an African queenmothership on the ability of African women to advance in political, educational, and economic spheres in their countries? The Ashanti tribe of the Man people is the largest tribe in Ghana; it is a matrilineal society. A description of the precolonial matriarchal tradition among the Ashanti people of Ghana, an analysis of how the matriarchal concept has evolved in more contemporary governments and political situations in Ghana, and an analysis of the status of women in modern Ghana may provide some insight into the impact of the queenmothership concept. -

I examined historical changes in the administrative powers of the Surgeon General, to explain what factors affect how a Surgeon General utilizes the office’s “bully pulpit,” and assess changes in the political environment and in who oversees the Surgeon General that may affect the Surgeon General’s future ability to influence public opinion and health. This research involved collecting and analyzing the opinions of journalists and key informants such as current and former government health officials. American Medical Women’s Association Commemorating 95 years! AMWA 100 N. 20th Street, 4th Floor Philadelphia, PA 19103 P: 215- 320-3716 F: 215-564-2175 E:[email protected] The American Medical Women’s Association as the Vision and Voice of Women in Medicine 1990-2010 By Eliza Lo Chin, MD, MPH and Laurel Waters, MD, FCAP, FASCP More than 600 AMWA members gathered in Philadelphia in the fall of 1990 and celebrated the Association’s 75th Anniversary in style. Of historical significance was the inauguration of AMWA’s first African-American president, Dr. Roselyn Payne Epps. Keynote speaker, Dr. Antonia Novello, the first woman physician to serve as Surgeon General of the United States, was welcomed with a standing ovation and sense of pride that was palpable. It was a moment for all women in medicine to cherish. The next two decades marked impressive growth and expansion of the organization. Healthcare Advocacy In the early 1990’s, AMWA was actively involved in healthcare advocacy at all levels within the organization, including legislative days on the hill, press briefings at the White House, and student internships. Among the issues that AMWA championed during these years were the Family and Medical Leave Act which was passed in 1993, the smoking cessation Tobacco Product Education and Health Promotion Act, pro-choice legislation, and the acceptance of RU-486 as a medical abortifacient. Year after year, AMWA continued to be an indefatigable champion for women’s health rights. 1992: On April 5, an AMWA delegation marched in Washington DC with the National Organization for Women (NOW) in support for reproductive choice. -

THE CONCEPT OF “WOMAN”: FEMINISM AFTER THE ESSENTIALISM CRITIQUE by KATHERINE N. FULFER Under the direction of Christie J. Hartley and Andrew I. Cohen ABSTRACT Although feminists resist accounts that define women as having certain features that are essential to their being women, feminists are also guilty of giving essentialist definitions. Because women are extremely diverse in their experiences, the essentialist critics question whether a universal (non-essentialist) account of women can be given. I argue that it is possible to formulate a valuable category of woman, despite potential essentialist challenges. Even with diversity among women, women are oppressed as women by patriarchal structures such as rape, pornography, and sexual harassment that regulate women’s sexuality and construct women as beings whose main role is to service men’s needs. WOMEN’S RIGHTS IN AFGHANISTAN BACKGROUND INFORMATION Since the fall of the Taliban in 2001 progress has been made to protect the rights of women in Afghanistan but, with the withdrawal of international troops planned for the end of 2014, insecurity could increase and Amnesty International is very concerned that women’s rights are at risk. KEY FACTS The Taliban ruled Afghanistan from 1996 – 2001 Afghan women right’s activists demonstrating Under the Taliban, women and girls were: • Banned from going to school or studying. • Banned from working.
